Adding a Splash of Vitality to the Kitchen (in BIG, Bold Colors)

Posted: 26 Jan 2010 12:46 PM PST

Vitality is a life-affirming quality. We count on it to make us feel good about ourselves in many aspects: work, family, hobbies and home design. The kitchen is a great place to show your vitality. After all, it's the place where you provide sustenance for yourself and loved ones.

So how do you go about it? Color – bold splashes of it. It's so easy to incorporate color into the kitchen through new design, remodeling or simple alterations.

The simplest way to show vitality in the kitchen is with bright, brave paint. If you're painting your current kitchen, choose an item in the room that really catches the eye and run with it. One woman painted her kitchen a vibrant blue to match the overhead lighting. Blue isn't a common color for kitchens, so it makes a huge impact on the atmosphere of the room.

For new construction or remodeling, you may select a color that shows up in your new countertop or flooring, or perhaps a special dish you intend to display. Hanging artwork works just as beautifully. Don't be afraid to be too bold – paint is one of those design features that's cheap and easy to redo.

Another great eye-catcher is a colorful tile backsplash. The tile pattern may only occupy a small amount of wall space, but it makes an incredible difference.

Add to that a mantle-like frame made of bright white molding to encase the stove or sink, and you have a whole new feature in the room. The tiles also serve an additional function. Not only are they striking, but easy-to-clean in a space that sees a whole lot of grease splatter.

Other easy ways to brighten up the kitchen are vibrant countertops, light fixtures and island seating. Beautiful!

Choose Carpet That Can Stand-Up to Foot Traffic

Posted: 26 Jan 2010 12:25 PM PST

When selecting carpet, you want a style that can last a long time. Carpet is a big investment so it's wise to choose something affordable and durable. One thing you need to consider when it comes to choosing a carpet style is foot traffic.

If you want to put carpet in a high traffic area such as your hallway, a child's room or the family room, consider nylon carpet. Nylon carpet is made from exceptionally durable fibers and is one of the most popular choices in today's homes.

Here are some other carpet types to consider for their levels of durability:

Olefin is another popular choice because of its resistance to stains, static electricity, and moisture.

Polyester is good choice and has a luxurious appearance, is easily cleaned, and is resistant to water-soluble stains.

Acrylic provides a beautiful appearance of wool with a less expensive price tag.

Wool is the most luxurious of all carpeting choices but isn't the most practical for a young family with children or high traffic areas.

Carpet Blends such as acrylic/olefin and nylon/olefin are also options.

ANDREA Air Filter: All-Natural Plant-Based Purification

Posted: 26 Jan 2010 10:44 AM PST

Breathing just got easier. French designer Mathieu Lehanneur and Harvard professor David Edwards have taken air filtration to new heights. As much as we'd like to believe we keep good houses, the truth is that the air in any home contains impurities that negatively impact our breathing and general health. Unfortunately, we all know that in-house air filters are usually quite unattractive. While they may help the air, they do nothing for the décor.

Lehanneur and Edwards teamed up for what was initially an art and science experiment in 2007, and came out smelling like a rose – or a houseplant to be exact. ANDREA Air uses any ordinary houseplant to transform toxic VOCs and noxious gases into fresh, clean air that actually smells like the plant of your choice.

How Does it Work?

We all know that plants naturally filter air, both outdoors and in. The ANDREA Air Filter uses that aspect of plant life and amplifies it for in-home health benefits. The invention provides an attractive air filter that houses a plant and requires no replaceable filters. Andrea uses a quiet-as-a-mouse fan to draw the air from a room into the filter. The polluted air is then drawn through the foliage of the plant into its root system. As the air filters through the root system (and also through the water that doubles as necessary moisture for the plant), the pollutants are eliminated. Air is then forced out through the filter's side vent and back into the room.

With the water chamber feeding the plant, it's fair to assume that ANDREA is not only purifying our air, but humidifying it as well. Another double feature is the device's clear top. It serves as a terrarium for the plant, allowing sunlight and warmth to reach the foliage more easily.

So what makes this better than regular houseplants on your windowsills? It's true that houseplants alone help to improve the quality of the air in a home, but ANDREA does a much better job. The science of the device gets a little complicated, but the result is a living air filter that removes 360 percent more formaldehyde from the air than a plant alone. It also removes harmful gases from the air 1000 percent faster than a standalone plant.

ANDREA Air Filters are already available for sale through: Amazon, Hammacher Schlemmer, FrontGate and Natural Mom Gear. It's a little pricey, but not unreasonably so, and you'll breathe easier knowing you have ANDREA in your home.

Setting Up a Nursery with a Recycled Cradle

Posted: 26 Jan 2010 01:32 AM PST

When pregnant with my first son, my husband and I were looking for inexpensive ways to prepare ourselves (and our home) for our child. One of the ways we did this was to scour garage sales for items we could either re-purpose or somehow upcycle for the nursery. As luck would have it, one such sale in our neighborhood had a solid wood rocking cradle with scratched paint up for grabs. After some haggling, I purchased the cradle for $10, and had my new project at hand.

First, I dismantled the cradle and kept the hardware in a plastic bag - much of it was rusted and needed replacing. Then, I hand-sanded all of the parts down to the bare wood as my brother helped to rebuild the bottom (removing the paint revealed some water-damage). With a couple cans of primer, spray paint, and sealant, I refinished the cradle to match our son's room.

About $30 of new hardware and some hand-painted trim later, we had a brand-new customized cradle for our baby for less than a month's worth of diapers.

Posted: 25 Jan 2010 06:10 PM PST

It’s been a busy year already, in a good way. We’ve been planning on doing a contest to show our appreciation for quite some time and finally we got around to putting everything together. We have the detail below on how you can participate, but before we move forward, we would like to introduce ourselves (after all a formal introduction is always a good way to start things).

fixR has been described as an “ebay for home remodeling“: homeowners list their remodeling needs as contractor submit estimates to get the work.

Unlike the yellow pages, fixR helps homeowners select the most competitive and successful contractors for free: when a contractor bids on your project, fixR alerts all other professionals so they can adjust their bids to win the job… but it doesn’t stop here: homeowners review contractors so you can check their reputation before selecting them. fixR allows you to choose contractors based on quality, reputation and price!

Now that we are done introducing ourselves, let’s get straight to the contest.

Prizes

Altogether we are giving away five prizes. The first, second and third prizes are listed below.
