We use them to soak in, bathe in sometimes to even daydream in. It’s the bathtub. But gone are the days when the bathtub was just your basic porcelain bathroom fixture. Now bathtubs have TVs, LED lights, even built in whirlpools! But before you run out to buy one of these new tubs, here are some tips to consider first:

  • First decide if it’s a bathtub that you really want and need. Showers are usually used everyday but if you’re not all that into taking hot baths then maybe you don’t need a bathtub at all. Consider splurging instead on an extra large shower with a bench.
  • Location, location, location. Just like real estate, depending on where you want to put your bathtub will dictate how much money you will spend on it. If you’re totally remodeling your bathroom, consider keeping the tub in its original location. You’ll save tons of money on tiling and plumbing costs in the end.
  • Consider the type of bathtub you want. You’d be surprised at the variety of bathtubs there are to choose from. The recessed bathtub is the most commonly installed style. A corner tub is triangular in shape and has only one of its sides finished as the other two are against walls. A drop in tub usually has molded seats for comfortable bathing. A freestanding tub usually stands alone on decorative clawfoot feet or on a base.
  • Just as there are many styles of bathtubs to choose from, there are just as many bathtub materials to choose from as well. From metal, porcelain, acrylic to stone and yes, even wood, the variety of materials to choose from are almost as endless as your imagination.

So now that we’ve taught you everything you need to know about purchasing bathtubs, here are some amazing bathtub designs to get your creativity going!:

Роскошь дизайна интерьера на бюджете

The myth that elegance and a luxurious atmosphere means shelling out big bucks can be easily dispelled when you inject a little creativity into your approach to interior design. A big part of this is taking a look at what you’ve already got on hand, and re-imagining what those elements can do to help you get the effects you’re after.

But, what are some out-of-the-box shortcuts that can help you get there? Writer and interior design enthusiast Joanna Crain from designshuffle.com is here to help get you started …

***

While a luxurious lifestyle is very appealing, especially when it comes to our homes, it is not practical for everyone. What if you want the look and feel of a high end interior but your budget won't allow for it? There are ways to decorate or redecorate your home with beautiful results and all within budget. Achieving this and creating a home you love takes a bit of ingenuity, some tricks of the interior design trade and a few interior design ideas.

Less is More

No matter what style you choose to decorate in, minimalism can be applied to your interior design efforts. You can have all the luxury you desire and not make it look over occupied with furniture or fittings that are unnecessary. By keeping your furnishings streamlined, you can afford to spend more on quality pieces you love. Instead of spreading your money out over many pieces of inferior quality, you'll invest in ones which will be in your home for years to come.

Consignment

Many times high end resale shops carry terrific bargains on quality furniture that have no signs of wear. From upholstered chairs and sofas to case goods such as end tables, armoires and sideboards, you'll usually find a variety of styles, colors and textures. If you don't find what you like the first visit, let the owner know what you are looking for and leave your number, also check back often for new items.

In the Details

When it comes to adding luxurious touches to your décor, small details can make a big impact. For instance, if you already have your furniture, choosing an expensive fabric for throws and pillows with embroidery or beading will cost way less than if you had bought an expensive sofa. However, if you haven't chosen your sofa consider buying one in a lovely texture that you can add a leading fabric pattern to from a high end designer. Another way to add luxury is through a hand knotted rug. While this detail can be an investment, it adds a quality and expensive feel to your room and will last a lifetime.

Think Function

Consider each room's function before shopping. What furnishings will you use the most? For example, if you spend a lot of time in the living room, then you'll want to spend more of your budget in this room to make sure the seating is as plush and durable as possible. Choose a high end sofa and chairs with a hardwood frame for longevity with down cushions for the most luxurious seating. These living room design ideas can be applied to any room of the home from the kitchen to the bedroom—spend the most on items you use the most.

Creating a luxurious space can be practical for anyone willing to do a little compromising and expend a little effort to make it happen. Soon you'll be enjoying the beautifully appointed home of your dreams.

Устанавливать передовые практики Siding кедра

Posted: 29 Mar 2011 09:00 AM PDT

Cedar siding is a beautiful addition to any home, adding character and charm. The one aspect with cedar siding to remember is that it is wood product, and needs to be handled with some specific care.

For instance, even though cedar is naturally resistant to moisture and to the elements in general which makes it the ideal natural siding material, it is still sensitive to excessive water exposure before it is installed. This can create a swelling and warping of the material. It doesn’t take much water exposure to render the material unusable prior to installation. It is best that the siding slats be kept six to 12 inches off the ground so that the exposure to water is limited. Also, placing spacers between the slats will help to ensure a straight piece of siding.

Let Cedar Siding Flex and Breathe

Cedar is a material that needs to be allowed to flex once installed. It is highly recommended that the product be installed over furring stripes that are attached to the studs of a wall. For siding that is being installed in a horizontal pattern, the furring strips should be attached vertically. For vertical siding installation, the strips should be attached horizontally. This allows for a space between the wood and the structure.

Moisture will effectively be kept from direct contact to the wall as the siding absorbs moisture from the elements. The paper used to cover the exterior wall prior to installing cedar siding should be breathable so that moisture can escape properly. This is especially important in areas surrounding window, doors and flashing.

Nails and finishes for cedar siding

Nails should be able to penetrate at least two inches into the furring strips and studs. You should use industrial-grade galvanized nails for this process. The nails must be thin in the shaft so that the wood will not split when being installed. Unlike some types of siding, you will need to nail siding strips independent of each other. If two pieces are attached together, it can inhibit the natural flexing of the wood and create gaps or splintering.

The last aspect of cedar installation is to make sure that you use quality primer and finish products. This is something that needs to be of high quality to help ensure the cedar siding remains beautiful for many years to come. If you are unsure of what products will meet your needs, there are many available samples and suggestions.

Making cuts to cedar siding planks

For making cuts and trimming cedar siding, you can use a hand saw and a simple miter box to do the trick. Cuts need to be as flush as possible and the ends need to be treated so that they are protected from the elements. Cedar is a natural deterrent for bugs such as carpenter ants and termites, but it is not impossible for these pests to harm cedar siding. A consideration regarding finishing products is that they will provide protection for the siding from insect damage.

Building codes and cedar siding installation

Finally, check with your city, township or county for building codes. Some areas prohibit the use of highly flammable products such as wood siding on a structure that is not deemed historic. Make sure the get the proper permits and licenses prior to beginning your project.

A cramped apartment in North London has been transformed into a seductive, stylish living space by Atmos Studio’s.

The home belongs to famous song writer and pianist Jamie Norton, he is signed to EMI and has worked alongside successful bands like Take That where he featured highly on their no.1 album The Circus! The apartment is positioned inside a grade 2 listed building from the Baroque era and is located on the top floors where space is minimal as there are 2 buildings either side.

Planning permission was achieved and the new storey was the perfect solution to expand the space!

Offering captivating views over London City!

For Atmos Studio’s this was one of the smallest interior design challenges they have ever had, however they planned a highly effective layout that combines ingenuity with creativity at it’s best. They executed a skillful floor plan and managed to convert a cramped space into an open living area which exudes light and tranquility.

Musical elements can be found scattered around the design!

The facets on the second floor were angled upwards to allow the natural light to flood in through the center stairwell, and the all white decor picks it up enhancing the feeling of space.

The design was influenced by the famous Japanese minimalism style!

By using digital fabrication the stairs appear as a sculptured seamless form swirling to the next floor. Graphic elements can be seen throughout this home even just from the continuation of the skirting board.

Atmos expanded this stairwell into a dramatic focal point!

Chasing the edges!

Dramatic flow imitates a spiders web from this perspective!

Around the stairs that lead into the living room storage and surface space has been inserted to not intrude on the valuable area to move around, and the upper parts have been used for shelving and to store books. The huge window allows this area to flow outside onto the generous courtyard.

Generous windows allow for a more spatial appeal!

The whole interior has been carefully created to meet the specific design requirements of the client. Hints of musical elements can be found and some eccentricity especially in the bedroom reflecting his personality!

A touch of the eccentric with a hint of vintage boudoir!

Every inch of usable space has function in this home! Alex Haw of Atmos Studio has shown here how a small cramped space can be re-born and configured into something special.

Every inch of usable space is transformed!

Once a dark grim space, now beautifully luminos!

Small but totally functional!

Every detail is covered!

This home has evolved into an organic masterpiece as architecture and tranquility unite to create a unique home for a unique guy. The architectural experience speaks volumes and as a result Jamie Norton has an urban jewel with a spirit of sensuality!

Alex Haw from Atmos Studio quoted during this project “You can get more out of space by doing less!”

7 больших садов от вокруг мира

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 09:00 AM PDT

A few flowers planted in the backyard may be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of a garden. However, gardens can be so much more than just a few plants. From a billion dollar garden to a Papal sanctuary, these gardens are some of the greatest gardens in the world.

1. Biggest Garden in the World
Leave it to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to create the biggest garden in the world. Named after the ruler of Dubai, the Mohammed Bin Rashid Gardens is 56 million square feet of lush gardens smack dab in the middle of the desert. It is probably the most expensive garden in the world, as well. The gardens, which are part of a larger metropolitan project, came with an AED200 billion price tag, which is the equivalent of more than $50 billion.

2. World's Largest Flower Garden
The Netherlands' Keukenhof Gardens is the largest bulb flower park in the world. The garden features 7 million hand-planted flowers, including more than 4.5 million tulips. The 32-hectare garden also includes 2,500 trees of 87 different varieties. In the past 60 years, more than 44 million visitors have visited Keukenhof Gardens.

3. Beautiful Botanic Garden
The Singapore Botanic Gardens is often recognized as one of the most beautiful botanic gardens in the world. The garden, which was founded in 1859, features native plants, several lakes, a children's garden and more. In 2001, the Heritage Trees program was launched to support the conservation of mature, native trees in the country. Eleven of the 14 trees in the Singapore Botanic Gardens were ultimately designated as Heritage Trees.

4. A Garden Fit for a Queen
Truly a garden fit for a queen, the gardens at the Palace of Versailles in France will leave you breathless. The French gardens were designed by Andre Le Notre and feature ponds, fountains, thousands of trees and a labyrinth commissioned by King Louis XIV. In 1979, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) named both the gardens and the palace a World Heritage Site.

5. A Garden Fit for a Pope
The gardens at the Palace of Versailles were created for French royalty and the gardens at The Vatican were created for some Papal peace and quiet. Pope Nicholas III created the Vatican Gardens in 1279 when he returned to Vatican City from the Lateran Palace. Pope Nicholas III's garden was the first garden in the Vatican.

6. A Ming Dynasty Garden
China's Ming Dynasty brought us gorgeous ceramics and amazing architecture, including the famous Forbidden City. Something more natural also came out of the Ming Dynasty - the Humble Administrator's Garden. The 13-acre garden was built in the early 16th century and features, lakes, streams, a rain pavilion, bonsai sculptures, zigzagging bridges and more.

Photo: IceNineJon/Flickr

7. Unique Underwater Sculpture Garden
Jason deCaires Taylor's underwater sculpture garden off the coast of Grenada is the perfect example of art meeting nature. The 65 sculptures are helping create an artificial reef to help sustain the sea life in the region. The sculpture garden is between two and eight meters underwater, the perfect depth for divers and snorkelers. If you'd like to see this unique underwater sculpture garden but would prefer to stay dry, a glass-bottomed boat tour is your answer.

Even if you don’t quite have the square footage of some of these gardens, it’s easy to see that a garden can add an element of tranquil beauty to a property. Who knows? Maybe there are some ideas here that you can apply to your own backyard landscaping visions, to create tranquil spaces of your own this season.

Как быть подготовленным для землетрясения

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 01:59 AM PDT

It was the worst earthquake in Japan’s history and came with little warning. And even though the Japanese consider earthquakes a way of life, the damage this particular earthquake incurred was strictly beyond compare. And if you happen to live on the West Coast of the United States, your anxiety level is now probably on ultra-high alert. Well, we here at Fixr believe knowledge is power so we came up with the following useful tips to help prepare you for the possibility of a major earthquake:

  • No one likes to think about impending disaster, but as we have all seen from images of Japan over the past week, disasters occur in the blink of an eye. That’s why having a disaster supply kit at the ready is so necessary. This kit should contain all the necessities you and your family would need to survive for at least 2 days. This includes everything from medications to bottled water to emergency cash, personal hygiene supplies, batteries and a first aid kit.
  • Along with a personal disaster necessity kit, you should also prepare a household disaster kit as well. Remember, during times of emergency, utility systems maybe disrupted for several days so stashing the following items in an accessible location (preferably someplace that’s fireproof) could be a lifesaver: water, flashlights, canned and packaged foods, pet food (if you own one), blankets or sleeping bags, warm clothing and comfortable socks.

So now that you know how to prepare your family, here are some tips on how to get your home earthquake prepared:

  • Have a lot of tall furniture in your home? Well, tall furniture such as bookshelves or filing cabinets can be quite dangerous during an earthquake. To best protect these pieces (and yourself) secure the tops of tall furniture to wall studs using furniture straps. To secure the pieces inside the shelves, secure them with earthquake putty or gel.
  • If not secured properly, a TV can be a dangerous projectile during an earthquake. To prevent injury and damage to yourself and to the equipment, secure them with earthquake straps, industrial hooks and loop adhesive, or non-skid mats to keep them in place.
  • During an earthquake, wall hangings like picture frames or mirrors can fall off the wall and cause injury by either the broken glass cutting your feet when stepped on or they may fall on you if they’re hung over your bed. To prevent this from happening, hang all pictures and mirrors using closed hooks screwed into wall studs so that they can’t bounce off the walls during a quake. You may also want to extra secure pictures and mirrors by placing earthquake putty on their corners.
  • The belief that standing under a doorway during an earthquake is a complete myth and could turn out disasterous. Instead, if you should be caught indoors during an earthquake, the safest place to be is under a sturdy table. There’s actually 3 simple words that should be remembered on this occasion: DROP, COVER, and HOLD ON. This means, DROP under a sturdy table, taking COVER underneath, and HOLD ON to a leg as it will move with the shaking ground.

So now that we’ve versed you on the important safety issues, now it’s time for some fun. Here are some examples of homes we found that are specifically built to be completely earthquake proof:

The architects of this earthquake proof house, HHF Architects, are very proud of their work. They’re so proud of this house, located in Ordos, Inner Mongolia, that they integrated the initials “HHF” right into the design. As you will see from the photo below, the top of the structure clearly spells out their name. As for being earthquake proof–every floor slab in the house is supported separately by a concrete core and one outside wall. For added stability, the concrete stairway walls are also supporting walls. Now that’s safety and beauty at the same time!

At first glance, it may not quite look all that attractive but if you’re looking for a truly sturdy home, you’ve found it. Built by Japan Dome House Co. Ltd and crafted from 100% expanded polystyrene foam (styrofoam), these igloo shaped houses, which are located in Japan, are sturdy enough to withstand rust, rot, termites, typhoons and yes, earthquakes. Now that’s beautiful!

Called the 'Rotating UFO Home', this unusual house, which is made with wood and insulated by cork, is not only eco-friendly and earthquake proof, it’s also quite talented. A small mechanical structure that’s built into the base of the house actually allows the dome to rotate. This means the house, which was designed by Patrick Marsilli of Solaleya, is exposed to sunlight at all hours of the day And with its array of skylights, the views can actually be quite amazing.

At first glance it looks like the Jolly Green Giant’s soccer ball. Oh, but it’s actually so much more than that. Encased in stainless steel and the ultimate in safety, it’s an earthquake proof, bullet-proof, floatable family dwelling . Called The Barier and created by Japan’s Kimidori Kenchiku , this structure is available in a variety of sizes–from doghouse size to big enough to fit a family of four. It can also be buried underground and used as a tornado or bomb shelter. And for the ultimate in comfort, The Barier can be fitted with a mini-kitchen, a bed and two 15-inch LCD TVs. Now that’s real comfort!
