It's true, home improvement sales are in the air. The time of pricey renovations and massive overhauls may be gone (for the time being), but now Americans are trekking back out to home improvement stores all across the country. Why? Because the remodeling game is back on – this time with a whole new set of rules. 
Harvard University's Joint Center for Housing Studies reports a 5% growth in 2009, with even higher spending growth expected in 2010. But while many people once remodeled to get more bang for their selling buck, they're now upgrading their homes in order to make them more comfortable in the long run. In other words, homeowners are expecting to stay put for at least a few years more. Who's Remodeling What? In this new remodeling game, a significant amount of attention is being paid to the most cost-effective changes. The homes that used to undergo expensive master suite additions, for example, are now experiencing smaller cosmetic changes that won't require owners to tap into their equity. 
Kitchens are seeing more cabinet and floor replacements, and if space was an issue before, it's being remedied with the removal of a dining room wall. And of course, new tile or fixtures are able to provide minor facelifts. Home office remodels are now simple bedroom conversions that require only a small cost to rewire and add storage space. Bathrooms are seeing similar small changes in new fixtures and flooring. Another indication that homeowners are paying closer attention to how much they're spending: an increase in the number of green materials, appliances, and lighting. Not only do these help save money in the long run, but they can also mean tax credits for owners. Change may be hard to swallow, but this new responsible America seems to be on the right track. | Как De-Создайте суматоху ваш космос Posted: 27 Apr 2010 08:00 AM PDT  Referencing an earlier post here on the BuildDirect blog about ways to renovate your space for Spring, and still being in Spring-mode, I thought it might be helpful to talk about the first item on that list, and frankly the one closest to my heart: de-cluttering.
With that in mind, and not being an expert in the fine art of de-cluttering (although I’d sorely like to be), I found another post about this very subject; de-cluttering zen style thanks to Leo Babauta, who you can also follow on Twitter as @Zen_Habits. This post comes from the point of view that minimalism is good, which is a pretty compelling approach as far as I’m concerned. I don’t know much about zen, but I do think that there is a certain logic in the idea that when you inhabit a space that isn’t cluttered, then it often encourages de-cluttered thinking, too. And that can lead to a semblance of peace of mind. So, it’s important. For or many people I think, the act of de-cluttering involves a few challenges. I have a number of personal ones, myself. Here they are, and maybe you can relate. 1. Being Disciplined. When it comes to the act of de-cluttering, my procrastination tendencies are inflamed. What I always forget is that great feeling I get when spaces are cleared, and when I have less stuff and more room. Or at very least, the great feeling I have when I can find the stuff that counts, rather than seeing all of the stuff that doesn’t. There is a kind of liberation that happens when you de-clutter. Maybe it’s the zen idea of detachment from earthy possessions. Or maybe not. But, whatever it is, the way to get there the fastest is to do it now. 2. Being productive. It’s hard for me to see de-cluttering as a productive thing. I mean, nothing is really being created when I de-clutter, is it? Maybe space. But, that’s really the absence of a thing, rather than a thing itself. But, ultimately de-cluttering is productive. The act of clearing away the old to make way for the new is a move in the right direction. This is hard to see when I’ve got to “get things done”. But, the thing I have to keep in mind is that the act of de-clutter is an act of creation; fresh start, and a clear mind. 3. Being Focused. OK. Confession time. I am a sentimental person. So, when I de-clutter, I find things that I’ve not seen in a long time, and I browse and reminisce when I should be sorting through what I want to get rid of. As per the whole zen detachment idea again, there is a time to wander down memory lane as sparked by objects and documents that, before I decided to clear it out, I’d forgotten about. Setting time limits is a good idea (mentioned in Leo’s post); sort now, browse later. That way, I can be productive and be sentimental, too. 4. Being merciless. It’s hard to know when to let go sometimes. But, chances are even if I think that scrap of paper will be vital to me as soon as I throw it away, it probably won’t be. Sometimes too, it’s those items that I’m sureI’ll make use out of that trip me up the most. But when I get into the right state of mind, it is surprising to me how little I actually need to have around. And getting rid of the detritus collected over a long period can increase my enjoyment of the things that remain after the whole de-cluttering is over. So, there are my challenges when it comes to de-cluttering. And hopefully at the same time I’ve hit on a few ways to help you figure out how to de-clutter, too. When steps into your home become difficult or impossible to climb, it is time to eliminate the steps. The twin challenges are to lose the steps without losing the desired look of the home. 
An obvious answer to the first challenge is a ramp that gradually carries a person from the sidewalk to the front door. Unfortunately, most ramps don't meet the second challenge: They greatly alter the appearance of a residential property. Ramps often are constructed of materials that don't match the home, feature long, clunky switchbacks that eat up gobs of yard space and barely qualify as a "home improvement." Still, what is a body to do when climbing steps is impossible? Talk to a contractor, preferably one with architectural connections. Tell him you want access to the home but with the following stipulations: 1) If a wooden ramp is the answer, make it unobtrusive, serving a side or rear door, perhaps. Shield it from passersby with landscaping that blends with existing plants and trees. Construct it of finish materials that make it a complementary extension of the home, rather than an ugly appendage to it. 2) If a manufactured metal ramp is preferred, follow the same criteria – shielding, blending, matching and otherwise obscuring its presence as viewed from the street. This is more than cosmetics. Security sometimes is jeopardized by facilities that scream, "Handicapped!" or "A Senior Citizen Lives Here!" 3) If the elevation difference is not too great, the answer could be a broad and gradual earthen ramp that's landscaped and topped with a new sidewalk. This approach actually could enhance the front view of a house. 4) If a physical impairment is only for a few months – the result of an injury, perhaps – the method selected still should have benign impact on the home's appearance and be reversible. A temporary metal ramp, for example, should be positioned and shielded so as not to devalue the property during convalescence. Letting a place go not only depreciates a home's value but probably retards the homeowner's recovery as well. A home can function differently when life events require it, and do so without changing the home's essential character. Home ramps: - They override those impossible steps.
- Contractors can build them so they blend with existing property.
- Commercial steel ramps are useable – but also should not detract.
- Even temporary removable ramps can be added attractively.
