Качания крылечку: Creaky старые вещи все еще удобная сидят

Posted: 20 Apr 2010 05:07 AM PDT

Finding a porch to swing on definitely is a challenge these days, but the variety of porch swing – materials, designs and price ranges – probably never has been larger.

Good thing porch swings don't need porches because there are some poor excuses for porches being built on homes today. They might more accurately be called porchettes or recessed areas by the front door.

Before central heating and air conditioning let homeowners fine-tune their environment, they sought cooling breezes outside the front door in open, roofed areas that actually were wide enough to set chairs on and stretch out. At one end of the porch, a two or three-place slat-backed bench often was swung on chains from the ceiling.

Don't get all nostalgic. You still can enjoy the pleasant sensation of a seated gentle swing. Your dilemma today is choosing from among the myriad of styles offered by craftsmen. Porch swings range from creaky-soft wicker comfort to practical "poly-wood" creations to shiny-slatted mahogany and teakwood elegance.

You can get two-place cozy swings for moonlight romancing or swing beds with mattresses that are at home in a home. Prices range from a couple hundred dollars to a couple thousand.

What is harder to find is a genuine porch to swing on, which is why swing A-frames are a standard option available at porch swing dealers. This is where shopping for a swing becomes a safety issue.

Architects and builders have long since determined what dimensions are necessary to ensure that a porch swing remains on stable footing in the course of its swing on an A-frame. Essentially it is a question of how far apart to space the legs of the "A" on each side of the swing. The distance varies with the height of the cross bar.

Naturally, the weight of a swinger, or swingers, is calculated in designing the swing supports. What can't be calculated is the exuberance of a swinger, particularly young, playful types who are under the mistaken impression they can swing as high and fast from an A-frame as they can from the limb of a tree.

This miscalculation eventually will result in tipping of the A-frame and spilling out of a swing's occupants. Seat belts won't help (were that an option). Cantilevered metal frames with a flat base seem especially vulnerable to tipping under such conditions. The same seems true of "arbor" frames.

Securely staking the legs or base of a frame to the ground is one solution. Another is to reserve the swing for gentle, conversational get-togethers and to ban competition swings by the under-15 crowd. The third and best answer is to forget the frame altogether and hang the swing from the ceiling of a porch. If you can find one.

Porch swings:

  • Variety of designs and materials is great.
  • Most swing from A-frames, which can be precarious.
  • Guidelines for use are advisable for the young.
  • They are ideal for use on a porch.

Posted: 19 Apr 2010 09:00 AM PDT

Hi Everyone! Here’s another post from an expert in the field. Today's guest blog is from Handyman Matters CEO, Andy Bell. Handyman Matters is a nationally recognized franchise concept that serves the repair, restoration and maintenance needs of both residential and business customers. In this post, Andy shares his industry expertise and how to protect yourself from hiring a potentially shady contractor…

***

It can be said that the contractor industry as a whole has a bit of an embarrassing black eye. In fact, it ranks in the top tier of the most complained about industry among consumers. Handyman Matters has been working towards industry change and community consciousness since 1997 by educating consumers on the right questions to ask any potential contractor. As a part of our consumer education efforts, Handyman Matters created a Consumer Guide to Choosing a Home Repair or Remodeling Contractor that contains the 21 questions to ask to make sure your project gets done on time and on budget.

Our extensive customer surveys have identified certain issues that homeowners are most concerned about. This report explains the information necessary to get the best job done at the best price. It explains what you need to know, why you need to know it and the questions to ask to make sure you get the information in order to make an informed, safe decision.

Take a look at the list of questions.

Checklist: 21 Questions to Save Time, Money and Frustration

1. How long have you been in business?
2. Do you have complaints filed against you with the BBB?
3. What documentation do you have that proves you're qualified?
4. Do you require an advance deposit on all jobs?
5. What experience or proof do you have that you can do (whatever I need)?
6. How many times have you done (whatever I need) before?
7. What guarantee do you have that you will show up on time?
8. Do I get a written quote (for larger projects) and how is it calculated?
9. Will you help me make a materials list so I can buy my own materials to save money?
10. What is your employee screening process before hiring (or if working with an individual, check his or her background)?
11. Do you have policies for how you or your employees will conduct themselves in my home? If so, what are they?
12. How will I contact my craftsman before and during the job?
13. What steps do you take to communicate with me before, during and after my job?
14. Will you come back at no charge and fix any problems with your work that show up after you leave? For how long?
15. What guarantees do you have in writing?
16. How long will it be before you can start work on my job?
17. Do you have a current business license and/or contractor license (if your local government laws require it)?
18. Do you have proof of insurance?
19. Do you have letters of reference from your bank suppliers to show that bills are paid and that you are in good financial standing?
20. Do you have letters of reference from past customers that I can contact?
21. Do you have a written safety program and follow safe work practice?

To weed through the lawn of the less-desirable, use this checklist as a guide when interviewing potential contractors. Feel free to add questions to the list and keep a notepad and pen handy for writing responses.

Sincerely,

Andy Bell
