20 движений или: Разрешать кубик Rubik

Posted: 31 Dec 2010 04:00 AM PST

Rubik’s cubes, like Legos, are a must-have toy for future architects and engineers. Appropriate, given that the inventor of the cube was an architect, and playing with the cube can improve spatial IQ. It seems that almost every child of the 70s or 80s possessed at least one of the colorful cubes, but only the truly talented or persistent could solve it.

If it took the inventor of the Rubik’s cube an entire month to solve his own creation, then it’s safe to say it’s not an easy thing to accomplish. The goal of the game is to rotate the components of the cube so that each side is consistent in color. The current world record for solving it is just over 7 seconds, and as the result of extensive study, it has been proven that any cube can solved in 20 moves or less, referred to as “God’s Number.” It doesn’t matter the starting configuration, according to the algorithm.

The Rubik’s cube has claimed its rightful place in pop culture. In many movies and TV shows, including Wall-E and Seinfeld, characters have solved the cube to demonstrate their intelligence. At one point, there was even an entire television show devoted to the Rubik’s cube! It’s also seemingly influenced architect’s designs, such as a glass tower by Herzog & deMeuron in New York City’s Tribeca neighborhood that features shifting floors, and John Portman’s giant concrete structure for the Hyatt Regency in San Francisco has been compared to a half-twisted cube.

There are countless websites devoted to solving the cube. Over 40,000 YouTube videos illustrate tips and tricks. The website All Too Flat pulled an elaborate prank in which they covered a cubed sculpture in the middle of Astor Place in New York City with colored squares so it resembled a solved cube. There are countless Facebook groups devoted to the art of solving the cube and those who love to attempt it.

Have you ever solved a Rubik’s cube?

Гористое сражение: 10 самых крутых улиц США

Posted: 30 Dec 2010 04:00 AM PST

Some inclines are so slight that you barely notice them when you are walking down the street. If you are on a bike or in a car, it becomes a little more apparent; don’t forget to use that parking brake. In some cases, you might even need a vehicle with four wheel drive to gain access.

It probably comes as no surprise that seven of the ten steepest US streets are in California. The very steepest, at an impressive 45% grade, is located in Hawaii. Two of the top ten are located in the state of Pennsylvania, which is a little surprising. Notably absent from the list? San Francisco.

Eldred Street in Los Angeles presents unique challenges to garbage carriers. Special trucks are assigned to the street, and workers must first back up the steep street before edging down to collect the trash or they risk tipping over at the top when turning around. The mail carriers don’t even bother: mail is distributed in a group arrangement of boxes at the base of the hill.

City services aside, building a home on a steep grade presents many challenges and extra expenses. First, it’s necessary to create a flat area on which to build your home, which typically requires a retaining wall that is back-filled with dirt. If not laid correctly, slabs often crack on top of this fill as it settles. Footings may be necessary in some locations, and should be deep enough to prevent slippage if you live in an area with severe winters. Grading of the land may be required to ensure that water flows downhill and not into your house.

Keep in mind that steep slopes also offer a few advantages to the homeowner. They provide breathtaking views, ventilation and natural light and generally encourage good drainage. Less excavation may be required than is involved in building a home on flat land. Consider hiring an architect who has experience with designing on steep slopes to avoid any potential disasters and maximize the assets.

Many cities have limited grades to the 15% range, so occurrences such as the streets below are anomalies from another era.

Эффектная дом водопада

The Waterfall House by the architect Andres Remy is inspired by combining modernistic architecture with nature. This design became possible due to the lot size and the close proximity to the lake.

With privacy in mind he designed the front of the house to host the service area’s and every window has been thoughtfully placed but with out stealing the breathtaking views.

Stunning images below of the Waterfall House!

A combination of modernistic architeture with nature

He constructed this house so the lake is the focal point capturing the reflection and refraction of the sun’s movements. To maximize the visual allure of the lake he designed the living area on the upper level creating a contemplative spacial place as the movement of the water changes throughout the day.

Reflection and retraction of the sun

The change in light and the concentric circles made from it’s visitors create a sensual environment. The lake with its natural elements inspired the spectacular cascading waterfall.

A private natural haven

Resulting from the waterfall is a shallow pool that sits harmoniously against the house and has been designed in such a way that you interpret that it is still part of the lake.

Relax to the sounds of nature

This haven of relaxation is built on the lower level thus offering privacy and the feeling you are at one with nature. With Lifestyle in mind he cleverly created an area with three different functions, a party room, play room and garage without prioritizing style.

A place of contemplation

In keeping to the combination of modernist architecture and nature, he designed the master bedroom ceiling to open up to the sky, creating a spacial, yet romantic space whether you are waking up to the sun or going to sleep with the stars.

Sleeping with the stars

No priority over function or design

A sensual environment to truly feel your senses

Creating a spatial experience

Космос Модернизации- ванной комнаты Josh малый с большими сновидениями

Posted: 28 Dec 2010 06:01 AM PST

Get ready for an amazing remodeling story. Josh Ramsey, young Dallas homeowner and entrepreneur, set out to create a spa-like oasis for his wife, Hannah, an ER nurse, to help her unwind at the end of a long day. But remodeling is hard, and Josh got stuck midway through.

So he did what anyone would do—he sent out an SOS on Twitter. I happened to see it, referred him to the best bathroom design sites I could think of, and in a matter of weeks, the man had finished this beautifully warm, artful renovation for a grand total of $2300.

1. First of all, WOW. Had you done any remodeling before?

Josh: I grew up a handy-man’s son. And as a homeowner of two years, I’ve done a few smaller projects on my own, but nothing to this extent. This project quickly became the most daunting task of my DIY Career.

But on a positive note, I feel like the Home Improvement Super Hero now. Since then, I’ve put in new hardwood floors and I've got a couple more projects up my sleeve.

2. Where did you find your inspiration?

Remodelista, Apartment Therapy, and CalFinder of course. I attribute much of the remodeling inspiration to you, Brittany. You were like a Twitter angel that came to me in my time of distress. After tearing out the old bathroom, I needed encouragement and inspiration. You found me on Twitter, and provided both.

3. What look were you going for?

I had a small space to work with and pretty big dreams for it. I wanted the bathroom to FEEL bigger, warmer, and more relaxing—a spa/sauna that my wife could come home to. That meant filling the room with warm yet regal colors (Ralph Lauren Metallic Golden), rich natural wood (1×4 Redwood slats from Himes & Starr), and a warm natural stone with clean lines and a modern feel (polished travertine from Floor & Decor).

4. Were you able to repurpose anything to save money?

Being on a tight budget, I was able to re-use the black vanity and light fixture over the vanity. Other than that, I ripped EVERYTHING else out, including the sub floor. The problem was the mold growing behind the shower tile. Because of an improper remodel by previous owners, I had to gut the entire bathroom. The bad taste left from that poor workmanship spurred enthusiasm to ensure the new bathroom was re-re-modeled meticulously well. So, I decided to do it myself.

But there was one DIY exception: because of the unusual size of the shower and fur-down, I had to get glass custom-cut and installed by our local Oak Cliff Mirror and Glass Company. I needed a frameless enclosure to keep from breaking up the room visually, and I left the opening door-less just to encourage that same open feel. Since I had never handled glass before, I wanted to make a DIY exception and have this installed professionally. I still don’t regret this decision.

5. Tell us about the new features.

The floors and shower are all polished travertine purchased from Floor & Decor. I built a half-wall to separate the toilet and give it some privacy and a nice sized seat in the shower. Because I was past my self-inflicted (actually, my wife’s) deadline, my dad came to town for the weekend and helped me cut and install all of the tile in a day and a half.

There was an existing fur-down above the shower, which I built out and used to add some recessed lighting and attach a rain shower. I then painted the new box black and pinned the redwood slats onto it.

The door is a re-purposed old door from my parents’ home. I framed it out, painted it black, frosted the glass and put it on a “pocket door” track, which I mounted externally.

Small accessories like the floating shelves, the new black-framed mirror, etc., we found on sale at different discount stores. My wife, Hannah, gets all the credit for the finishing touches. She has an eye for the finished product much more so than I do.

All told, how much did the job cost?

I spent:

$800 on travertine and supplies
$500 on custom cut glass
$200 on redwood
And another $800 on plumbing, new sub floors, Hardie backer, toilet, and accessories.

Grand Total: $2300

And worth every penny.

Special thanks to Josh for the interview and photos. You guys are rock-tacular.

This unique shell shaped villa sits in the middle of the woods in complete ignorance to it’s natural surroundings. Inside the shell structure are floors and walls separating the whole space and modernistic furniture giving it a feel of luxury yet the feeling of a refurbished old space ship. The natural surroundings are already starting to grow around it in acceptance.

The Shell residence

Kotaro Ide wanted to design a structure that would appear to be floating above the ground yet synchronized with the surrounding nature of the woods.

Sitting comfortably

The power to blend with nature is not about blending in, it’s about the existence! This house is a quality home sheltered from the outside world and offering a comfortable environment in isolation.

Ambiguous!

Frequent use will give this house more chance to develop into a retreat into the wilderness. The area has an uncomfortable climate with low temperatures and high humidity, however with frequent use, and it’s elevation this house has managed to be protected. Many traditional homes in this area are decaying through the call of nature and the weather conditions.

Living space in nature

In an ideal world this is an escape place, but the maintenance could be time consuming. A villa like this is in need of daily attention, however Kotaro Ide has typically used the Japanese virtue of leaving the boundaries of human every day life and nature ambiguous. Living space with nature is appealing although in need of devotion.

Retreat to nature

What we want from this home is leisure, rest, quiet, views and natural noises away from every day traffic..We want to breath fresh air, absorb the natural surroundings from within the space provided.

Stress free environment

In this typical summer resort only 1 hour and 10 mins from Tokyo many visitors now use this area as a weekend retreat, therefore the mechanical system of this home is about performance and comfort. Three buttons in the central control system manage the mechanical and electrical equipment and a biometrics locking security system offers a worry free time.

A weekend bolt hole

The under floor heating system helps to minimize heat energy usage and avoids emptying drainage in a cold area. This also enables you to enjoy the luxury of the space and is adequate to prevent any mold and damp. To help in the maintenance of this home the concrete was exposed and covered with a penetrative sealer.

Preston Koerner зеленого цвета Jetson

Posted: 27 Dec 2010 10:00 AM PST

We've been avid fans of green building blog Jetson Green for a few years and it's been great to see the site grow in popularity and influence. Founder, Preston Koerner, has always maintained a unique editorial voice that may be attributed to being based in Salt Lake City as well as being a credentialed LEED AP.

Recently Preston took Jetson Green through a complete redesign and he's also announced a few editorial changes that should make Jetson Green even more popular among homeowners interested in green building.

We asked Preston to share his thoughts on a few questions including the current state of the green building industry and what trends he's seen develop.

C&H: Congratulations on the redesign of Jetson Green. Tell us about the impetus for the redesign and what 2011 has in store for you.

Preston: Thanks, Timothy. I've been thinking about the redesign for probably two years. I wanted to showcase contributors and style image galleries. And, to be completely honest, I started to worry about whether Typepad, the prior platform, would be around in a year or two. So I took the plunge. In 2011, I plan to showcase some of the best green homes before anyone else on the web. I'll also enlist the help of some new contributors for top-notch materials and technology coverage. Expect exclusive interviews with major industry players and guest articles from these experts.

C&H: You've been blogging in the "green" space for awhile now. What long-term trends have you seen emerge since you started Jetson Green and what trends are on the horizon that might not be on the mainstream radar yet?

Preston: Four years and still going strong! One thing I'm seeing is smarter homeowners. They can scrutinize certification to determine whether a home is actually energy efficient or water-efficient, etc. And they demand performance. They want a tiny house that embodies their scaled down existence or a Passive House that actually uses a small amount of energy.

Also, watch out for the home energy score. Perhaps this will make its way into MLS. At some point, the market will recognize the value in green attributes and find a way to reward it.

C&H: Jetson Green takes a global approach to green building, what countries do you see that are consistently leading the way in the green building industry?

Preston: This site may showcase a project from around the world, including Canada, but the audience for the most part is American. That said, it seems like there's some good information coming out of Germany in regards to ultra-efficiency. Japan produces excellent design using little to no space. And Sweden has a lot of experience with prefabrication technology.
