Diotti A & F has been designing interiors for more than 100 years. They first started furnishing homes in the province of Milan then moving further afield to Bergamo, Lecco, Como, Varese and Pavia. They have now become an historical counterpart of Brianza.

Stachybotrys chartarum (Stachybotrys atra), or black mold, is a type of mold commonly found in areas with high moisture content. It grows in areas with low nitrogen and high cellulose content, such as: paper, fiberboard, dust, and gypsum board. There are several different kinds of mold, and though the black mold is not as common as others, it is not a rare form of mold.

Many people believe black mold is a toxic mold. Though the term "toxic mold" is thrown around loosely, it is inaccurate. Molds can produce toxins, but are not themselves poisonous. There is a small amount of mold everywhere, in the air and on various surfaces throughout homes and other buildings.

Health Risks of Black Mold
In 2004, the Institute of Medicine determined there is enough evidence to link indoor mold exposure with increased cough, wheeze, and other upper respiratory tract symptoms in otherwise healthy people. The evidence also suggests patients with asthma will likely experience more asthma related symptoms. People who have other conditions affecting their immune system have an increased risk for hypersensitivity pneumonitis – an inflammation of the lungs.

Healthy people may experience mild allergic reaction symptoms. Individuals affected by a chronic respiratory illness may have trouble breathing. Anyone with a suppressed immune system may have an increased risk of developing an infection from the mold exposure.

Mold exposure may not present any health problems, though those with allergies will likely be more sensitive to them. At this time, there is no test designed to prove mold as the direct cause of any illness.

How to Test for Black Mold
As all molds should be treated equally in terms of health risks and removal, it is not necessary to specifically test for black mold. Most infestations can be seen or smelled. Look in areas where moisture is common: sinks, showers/bathtubs, toilets, and kitchen. If you suspect you have a mold problem, you'll need to take care of it.

Routine testing for mold spores is expensive, and not recommended by the CDC because an individual's reaction varies greatly depending on the susceptibility and type of mold present. This means regular testing will not determine individual health risk. Standards for "acceptable" levels of mold in a home or business have not been established.

How to Repair/Restore Affected Areas
Remove mold from hard surfaces with commercial cleaning products. A soap and water solution will also help remove mold if no cleaning products are available. Many people opt to use a bleach solution to kill the mold spores and remove it from hard surfaces. The bleach solution should be mixed no more than one cup of bleach to one gallon of water.

When electing to clean the mold with a bleach and water solution:

  • Never add ammonia to the mixture, as bleach and ammonia produce toxic fumes. Do not add other household cleaners to the bleach mixture, as this may also produce toxic gas
  • Wear protective eye wear and non-porous gloves to keep the bleach away from skin
  • Open doors and windows in the area to keep it well ventilated.

If mold growth is present on absorbent or porous materials such as drywall or carpet, the best thing to do is to replace the material completely. If for any reason they cannot be replaced right away, getting them dry and eliminating the source of the mold growth is of utmost importance.

Simply cleaning the mold off of hard surfaces and replacing other materials is not enough to eradicate the problem. Where there's mold, there's a constant source of moisture, and without getting rid of where the water is coming from, the mold will continue to grow. Cleaning the hard surfaces will get rid of the appearance, but it won't get rid of the mold for good.

Mold Prevention Tips
Though mold will not always be avoided, there are some things people can do to prevent it including:

  • Monitor areas prone to water leaks, as a constant source of water is required for mold spores to grow and multiply.
  • Do not carpet the bathroom.
  • Keep indoor humidity between 40% and 60%, using air conditioners and dehumidifiers where and when necessary.
  • Install fans in the kitchen and bathroom to ensure there is adequate ventilation in those areas.
  • Clean the bathroom with products designed to kill mold.
  • Immediately take steps to clean and dry flooded areas.

While mold is unpleasant and should not be ignored, it is not generally a life threatening issue unless there is a severe allergic reaction. Those who are at higher risk to develop health issues because of mold exposure should take extra precaution against mold and seek medical attention when necessary.

Here in this master bathroom, Robert Wiltgen has created unfolding drama with a stone floor full of striking pattern and color from Portuguese Amarillo, and Marquina Negra and vanilla marbles. The trim surrounding the doors are made from Marquina Negra marble slabs. The wainscoting is paneled and painted black with a vanilla marble chair rail. The walls have been decorated with a white moire material. The window cleverly separates the bidet from the water closet from the other areas of the bathroom and was etched to allow light but still offer privacy.

Once the temperatures start to drop, most families start thinking about ways that they can stay warm while still saving on their winter heating costs. In our household, we are constantly on the lookout for ways to live well while still saving money.

Since a green way of living is also an important priority for us, we are also always looking for environmentally friendly ways to save energy and conserve resources. If you’ve been looking for ways to cut your winter heating costs, here are a few tips that can definitely help.

Adjust Your Thermostat Properly
Although it might be tempting to turn up the thermostat on chilly days, doing so is not an efficient way to save energy. Instead of turning it up, try turning it down a couple of degrees instead. Keeping your house just a couple of degrees cooler can really save money. Simply put on a sweater, and you probably won’t even notice the difference in temperature.

You can save more money and energy by turning the thermostat down even lower when you aren’t at home, or when you go to bed at night. If this is inconvenient, invest in a programmable thermostat to make things easy. Set it to turn the temperature back up before you get home from work and before you get up in the morning, and you’ll never notice the difference – except when you get your heating bill.

Utilize “Free” Solar Heat
Even in the winter, there are days when the sun shines brightly. On these sunny days, utilize the free solar heat by opening the curtains and blinds. You might be amazed at how much warmer a room can get, using only the power of sunshine. But, when the sun goes down, don’t forget to close the curtains and blinds again. In fact, by using insulated draperies and curtains, you can prevent even more heat loss through your windows.

Plug Those Cracks and Crevices
It doesn’t do much good to heat your home if you let it sneak out of the house. At our house, we do a home inspection twice a year – once in the spring and once in the fall. During the fall inspection, we focus on looking for cracks and crevices that could allow heat to escape and cold air to get in. If we find any of these problem areas, we use weather stripping and caulk to remedy the situation. Areas around windows and doors can be prime suspects for heat leaks.

It’s also important to check any areas where wires or pipes enter your home, as there are often small openings that can let heat leak out. By fixing these areas, you’ll be saving energy and making your home more comfortable at the same time. To help find these problematic areas, hold a lit candle or a piece of lightweight paper up close to where you think heat might be escaping. If the candle flickers or the paper flutters, you’ve found a spot that should be plugged. Weather stripping and caulk are quite inexpensive, especially when you consider how much you’ll save on your heating bill.

At our house, we love finding ways to save money, so it’s a natural to decorate in the most economical way possible. However, just because you’re saving money doesn’t mean you have to scrimp on the holiday spirit. If you’re looking for some great ways to add a holiday touch to the outside of your home while sticking to your budget, here are a few decorating tips to help get you started.

Utilize the Beauty of Nature
If you already have some evergreen trees in your yard, you can simply trim some branches from them to use as holiday decorations. Evergreen boughs are perfect for creating beautiful wreaths, garlands, door sprays, and other festive decorations. If you have a fence around your yard, drape it with an evergreen garland to add a beautiful holiday touch. You can add lights, or simply adorn the greenery with pinecones and other natural materials. A big red bow can add the perfect finishing touch.

Decorate with Giant Gifts
If you really want to grab some attention, create a giant stack of holiday gifts in your front yard. This is one decoration that can be fun to make as a family. All you need are some large cardboard boxes, a few plastic or vinyl tablecloths, some weather-resistant tape, and some wide water-resistant ribbon. Wrap the cardboard boxes individually, using a different color or pattern of tablecloth for each one.

Plastic packing tape or colored duct tape can hold your wrapping securely, even when exposed to the outdoor elements. Then, decorate each cardboard box “gift” by wrapping it with a colorful bow. Stack your giant gifts in a big pile, and you're done. This is one inexpensive yard decoration that we enjoy making year after year.

Energy Efficient Holiday Lights
If your family is anything like mine, you probably love to decorate your house and yard with sparkling holiday lights. But, it can be quite a shock when your electric bill arrives. In order to save money while still creating a bright holiday display, invest in some of the new LED lights. Although they can cost a bit more when you initially purchase them, they consume a very small amount of electricity. You can decorate your home with more lights than you would have previously dared to, without the fear of receiving a gigantic electric bill after the holidays are over.

Quick and Easy Decorating Touches
If you don’t have a lot of time or money this holiday season, focus on the basics. A simple red bow tied around your mailbox pole or a homemade wreath hung upon your front door might be all you really need. Position some of your indoor decorations so that they are visible from the outside, so that they can do double duty. Your home will still look great, plus you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing that you are saving money.

At this time of the year when the holiday season is in full swing, the spirit of the occasion leads us to think about the less fortunate in the world. Sometimes, this means thinking about those who live in the Third World, where there are certainly populations of those suffering from a lack of resources to see to their basic needs.

Yet what many forget is that here in North America, many families have been struggling all year just to make ends meet, relying on social programs like foodstamps to make sure that they are properly fed. Some are facing foreclosures, job losses, the burden of medical expenses due to lack of insurance coverage, and declining quality of life in general. The holidays for these people are often a reminder of their plight, not a comfort.

As a means of raising a bit of awareness at this time of year, I thought I’d shed some light on the plight of domestic poverty, particularly in the United States. With some stats in front of us that reveal just how many people are struggling under the weight of financial burdens this holiday season, perhaps our spirits of giving can be better ignited. And maybe too, we can take a look at how to change things for these people after the holiday season has come and gone, with a list of organizations working to change the tide of the numbers. The numbers are pretty shocking, with almost 15% of American families living below the poverty line, and a whopping 20% of children in US touched by poverty. To put things into perspective, that’s more than the population of Canada.

So, what do you do about this dire situation over the holiday period?

Well, here is a brief list of non-religiously affiliated charitable organizations to consider spending money and time on.

1. Bill & Belinda Gates Organization
In addition to global relief efforts, the organization invests in domestic programs as well.

2. Change.org
Learn more about the state of things in America. Examine your own community and how you can get involved in changing things for the needy in your neighborhood.

3. Oxfam America
Find out more about poverty in America, from an organization who is perhaps best known for cost-efficient and cooperative efforts in the Third World. Yet, as they point out, suffering from the effects of poverty is just as real when living in a relatively wealthy nation.

4. Feeding America
Read real stories of real people facing hunger issues in America, and about how you can help.

5. United Way
Issues of education, health, housing, employment, and even the environment play into the question of domestic poverty. Learn more from the United Way, an organization who draws these elements together, and empowers communities to strive for change.

6. Kiva
Listed as one of Oprah Winfrey’s ‘favorite things of 2010′, Kiva allows you to lend an amount (you decide how much)to an entrepreneur who has no resources, anywhere in the world. This includes those in your local community who are trying make a new start with a new idea.

I’ve listed some secular organizations here, but with the United States being a vocally faith-based country, another great resource are churches, synagogues, and mosques in your area, many of which include progams that see to the needs of the poor in your local community.

Also, check out Habitat For Humanity, which has a Christian element to their work, along with extensive expertise in providing affordable housing for those affected by natural disasters, as well as by poverty in general. One high-profile individual contributor to HfH in the past has been former President of the United States, Jimmy Carter, and his wife Rosalynn.

Three simple steps to maximize your fridge's storage space

Your schedule is not the only thing packed this holiday season; with parties, potluck dinners and relatives, so is your fridge. From trimming the tree to trimming the turkey, why not trim the space in your fridge to really pack in the party food and stuff in the savings this holiday season?

Follow these three easy steps from Mr. Appliance® to maximize your refrigerator's organizational potential so you can leave enough room to savor the leftovers and store your party food for your next soirée.

1. Use what you've got. Your fridge is designed with certain shelves and drawers for a reason, so use them. Keep juice and condiments in the door shelves and fruits and vegetables in the crisper drawer. This will move most items to the outer edges of your fridge to clear space for leftovers and other food.

2. Categorize and separate. Plan out any party recipes by cutting up ingredients ahead of time and storing them in separate stackable containers. Don't forget to keep meats toward the bottom of the stack to avoid contaminating other ingredients from dripping juices and keep all raw prep ingredients on lower shelves so they don't get too chilly.

3. Label and maintain. Keep a roll of masking tape and a pen in the kitchen near your food storage items. Label every container with masking tape and date the leftovers so you know at a glance when it's time to throw them out.

"Beyond organizational problems, the biggest issue we see with an overloaded fridge is odor," said Doug Rogers, president of Mr. Appliance Corp. "Customers will call us and ask why they have stinky ice. Usually it's because they forgot to put lids on their food containers, which can cause the walls of the fridge and even the ice in the freezer to take on those odors."

Rogers suggests freshening things up with vanilla extract. Pour a little bit on a towel and wipe down the walls or place it in a bowl to make your fridge smell like freshly baked sugar cookies all season long.
