2010 International Builders Show Revs Up Sin City Posted: 27 Jan 2010 01:24 PM PST Our friend Tim at Charles & Hudson did a fantastic job covering the 2010 International Builders Show in Las Vegas. It looks like James Hardie and Pella Windows were the big hits this year, with larger-than-life displays and even a build-your-own-window booth. Very cool. There were even some funny surprises! Take a look at these strange displays… Home Show No-NosThe Lumber Liquidators Bobsled? Having a hard time understanding the connection… liquidate lumber into water, freeze it into ice and proceed to bobsled down that sucker? Or maybe they just love bobsleds. I know I do. Or the Swarovski Napoleon Fireplace?! Definitely a beautiful, albeit it over-the-top piece. This fireplace holds a necklace ember bed filled with glass elements to reflect the flame's glow in every direction. It's obviously a fantastic item for an upscale home. Pretty to look at, nice for dreaming, but not a practical solution to heat your home (or spend your money). There were other incredible fireplaces on display as well. Well's Fargo Stagecoach – This is cute and all, but come on, show me the money instead. I'd rather see Well's Fargo and other banks attending home shows looking for ways to show support, like approving building and home purchasing loans. Elevators - I can't think of one home that has an elevator in it. Like Tim points out, trends are supposedly shifting toward smaller homes, so where would folks even put an elevator? Oh well, it's cool to look at! |
Reinvigorate Yourself with a Steam Shower Posted: 27 Jan 2010 11:31 AM PST It is estimated the average adult spends almost 92 hours per year bathing. Let the time you spend in the shower reinvigorate you by incorporating steam. Steam showers can be standalone units or you can purchase panels to install into existing showers. The addition of a steam shower in your bathroom will be like having a spa in your home. Steam in conjunction with water helps open pores and remove dead skin. It can revive and refresh you or relax and unwind you. To Steam or Not to Steam That is the QuestionA nice aspect of steam showers is you always have the option to generate the steam. Should you just need a quick, regular shower, you don't have to turn on the steam. Many systems also come with jet sprayers in addition to the regular shower head. This can give you a mini massage while you bathe. Reinvigorate your body as you bathe by using a steam shower. DirectBuy has most everything you need for bathroom remodeling to help you create a relaxing, spa-like experience with top brand-name products at prices that can save up to 50% off retail. |
10 Spectacular Underwater Structures Posted: 27 Jan 2010 11:00 AM PST The three rules of real estate are: location, location, location. And normally house hunters prefer that location to be somewhere on dry land. But as this gallery of underwater structures will show you, some of the coolest and most lavish locales can be found below sea level. Some are still in the works, some are ancient, and many defy logic—but all of them are must-see underwater spectacles. 1. Ithaa: the Underwater Dining RoomAt the Conrad Maldives Rangali Island resort, every diner gets a table at the window . . . or under the window. It is the world's first entirely underwater glass restaurant, and—with a 180-degree view of the Indian Ocean—it's the only place where you can watch the day's special swim freely overhead. 2. Seuthopolis, Bulgaria: the Underwater CityAs it stands, the city of Seuthopolis is literally underwater. The ruins of the culture that once thrived there were discovered in the midst of a reservoir construction project, and the water won the first battle. But a Bulgarian architect named Zheko Tilev is working to uncover the ruins and preserve it with a dam wall surrounding the city, protecting the burgeoning tourist location from the waters that would loom 20 meters above the city's ground level. 3. Delaware: the Underwater Subway ReefIn practice, the project was simple enough. By constructing a manmade reef along the coast of Delaware, activists would provide a shelter for marine life and a place to scrap hundreds of out-of-service subway cars. But the idea itself was temporarily scrapped amid controversial reception to the idea and difficulties in maintaining the structure. Still, it makes for a fascinating picture. 4. Mexican Caribbean: The World's Largest Underwater MuseumA marriage of nature and art if ever there was one. This collection of underwater exhibits and sculptures became open to the seafaring public in late 2009 in a truly unique and creative effort to raise environmental awareness. 5. Poseidon Resorts, Fiji: the World's First Sea-Floor ResortMaybe there's something relaxing about the ocean. Maybe you've always wanted to feel what it would be like to be the one in the tank and have the fish watch you. Or maybe you just can't pass up a chance to join the 40-feet-under-the-sea club. Whatever the allure, staying in one of these luxury underwater suites (in a project that's a bit behind schedule) is as cool as it gets. 6. Alexandria, Egypt: The Underwater Museum of a Lost CityQueen Cleopatra's palace, or what remains of it, is submerged in the waters of the Mediterranean, but the plans for an underwater museum are underway to bring it back to life in the eyes of its visitors. Unlike the Mexican underwater museum, which celebrates the environmental side, the museum at Alexandria would preserve the cultural treasures hidden in the waters. 7. Red Sea Star, Israel: the Underwater BarMoses may have parted the Red Sea, but visitors to the Red Sea Star don't have to pass through on "dry" ground—they'll have cocktails. The night observatory is gorgeous and unique, and the underwater scenery is like no other bar in the world. 8. Hydropolis, Dubai: the Fully Submerged Underwater HotelLike its counterpart in Fiji, the Hydropolis construction plan is running behind while the architectural ambition runs rampant. This deep-sea destination is slated to plunge more than 60 meters below the surface of the water. The images should be breathtaking, but, as with other speculative projects in Dubai, we'll believe this when we see it. 9. Yonaguni, Japan: The Underwater MonumentThis rock formation is something of a monumental mystery. Despite its massive size and imposing layout, the formation wasn't discovered until 1987. While some scientists believe the entire monument is nothing but a natural phenomenon, other scholars seem certain that much of it is the handiwork of man. No one can debate that the Yonaguni Monument is thoroughly fascinating. 10. Mataking Island, Malaysia: The Underwater Post OfficeIf you're tired of long lines waiting to ship a package, perhaps you'd prefer diving into the water in full SCUBA gear to check your mail. The underwater structure that houses this bizarre little post was formally used as a cargo ship. Now it's an object lesson in conservation and creative tropical reef mail service. Those were some of the most spectacular underwater structures. If you know of any feel free to drop a link. note : We are running a giveaway at the moment. Posted: 27 Jan 2010 09:00 AM PST You’re looking to preserve your wood floor, and enjoy it at the same time without spending undo time worrying about it. Frequent foot traffic on your floor is something to pay attention to, and thinking about simple ways to minimize wear can go a long way, too. One way to do that is pretty simple - get your visitors to wipe their feet on a designated floor mat. Entrances and exits in your space are the ultimate in frequent foot traffic sites, aren’t they? Everyone needs to get in and out. The problem with these sites is that outdoors elements and indoor ones don’t tend to mix. Dirt, grit, fragments of glass - all of these things can get tracked in onto your floor too. And because of this, minute scratching can occur that affects the original luster of your floor over time. You can see where a mat at a front door, a back door, a side door, where visitors and occupants are going in and out, might help to reduce the presence of these materials. The ‘welcome’ on the mat should be for your visitors, not the stuff that they bring in on their shoes. And one thing to remember is to give your entrance mats a frequent beating. Take out your frustrations, and clean your mats at the same time! Make sure you do this outside, with the door closed, so as not to introduce the grit and dirt trapped in the fibers of the mat into your house, and onto your flooring. And in the case of an indoor mat, make sure they don’t sit on your wood floor while damp, too. This is a common scenario in the wintertime, when melted snow runs off boots, onto mats, and then seeps through to the wood floor underneath. So there you have it. The next thing to think about is footwear, which we’ll talk about in an upcoming post. Until then, Cheers! Rob.
