While some people might talk hypothetically about decreasing their environmental impact, Cesa Milton was living green before there was a bandwagon to jump on. Now her North London residence is home to an eclectic array of items that were once slated for the trash. Prepare to trip WAY out.. 
Pulling from her background in the arts, Cesa refurbished a wide array of second-hand items and tackled several "from scratch" projects as well. Case in point: a makeshift brick wall in the hallway constructed from recycled newspaper. Maybe not the most practical accessory, but it certainly adds to the motif. 
Another favorite for its stickin' it to the man message: this ball constructed from years and years of bank slips. These are just a few of the oddities Cesa shares with the visitors of her annual home-tour-art-show, where participants are allowed to submit their own pieces (made strictly of recycled materials, of course). 
Despite the unconventional design, special attention was paid to keeping the rooms comfortable to lounge in and at least somewhat free from unnecessary clutter. However, there was at least one exception to this rule:

In this curious approach to table design, Holly Palmer took a spin off the old Russian nesting doll design and turned it into a trio of tables. Each one fits underneath the other, but they can easily be pulled apart to spread the space around. The "math" moniker got its eureka naming moment from the amalgamation of mathematic concepts like addition, subtraction, negative representation, and counting upwards.

*** No matter what you’re walking on, when it comes to flooring and floor care, one product doesn’t fit all. Each type of floor covering needs special care to keep it looking great day in and day out. Preventative maintenance is key to keeping your investment looking just like it did the day it was installed. These days, the more you can stretch a dollar, the better off you are and it doesn’t take much to keep your floors in good shape. You must understand the difference in floor coverings and the right products and techniques of cleaning your floors to maintain their beauty. Let’s face it, no one likes to clean, especially the floor and with so many cleaners on the market it is hard to decide what to use and how. In this post, we will examine hardwood flooring and the proper way to clean them. Hardwood floors in my opinion are the best overall option when it comes to choosing flooring for your home. Not only will they add rich, warm, beauty, but will increase the value of your home substantially. There are several different types of floor finishes that are used these days in both the manufacturing process and on-site finishing process. The main thing to remember is that you are actually cleaning the floor finish, not the wood, so you must understand the type of finish that your floor has. The easiest way to do this is to consult the installer, manufacturer of your floor, or previous home owner if applicable. There are basically 6 types of hardwood floor finishes: 1.) Oil-modified urethane 2.) Moisture-cure urethane 3.) Swedish finish/acid-cure urethane 4.) Water based urethane (Waterborne) 5.) Aluminum Oxide 6.) Penetrating Stain/Wax  That may all be a little confusing, so to sum it up, you can perform a simple test prior to cleaning and maintaining your hardwood floor: choose a small, inconspicuous area of the floor, and put a drop of water on it. Allow the water to evaporate completely. If a small white circle appears, the floor is probably waxed or oiled in which case you would definitely want to contact your flooring manufacturer to determine the proper cleaning method. If the white spot does not appear, then keep reading as you have a polyurethane type floor finish…
Everyone knows the simple, easy, trick of Vinegar/Water to clean hardwood floors. Surprisingly even professionals suggest this as a cleaning method. No disrespect, although it will clean your floors effectively, over time it will cause microscopic scratches which will dull your floor, plus who likes that smell? The best thing to use is a PH Balanced cleaner. Yes, there are hundreds of different types on the market, but there are proven winners out there, the main thing is to remember to avoid “oil soap” type products at all costs. The days of getting on your hands and knees to scrub your floors are over. With a micro-fiber mop, go with the grain in 3′x3′ sections at a time, always remembering to rinse the mop in clean water periodically to ensure a fresh cleaning! Here are a few additional hardwood floor cleaning and maintenance tips to help as well: 1.) Sweep often, daily if needed. Dirt is a floor’s worst enemy!
2.) Rugs should be used to cover high-traffic areas, and move them periodically if exposed to regular sunlight, keeping blinds and shades closed as often as possible.
3.) Remove shoes when possible, especially stiletto heels, cleats, etc.
4.) Mop up wet spills immediately!
5.) Install floor protectors on furniture legs to prevent scratches. Never drag furniture across the floor, always lift when moving.
6.) If your hardwood floor looks old/dull and you cannot restore the luster with deep cleaning or by polishing, you may want to contact a Professional to learn about your sanding and re-finishing options. To sum it up, cleaning a hardwood floor really is simple and easy, and oh so worth the time! The main thing is to determine your type of finish and to maintain a schedule of cleaning with your selected Cleaning product on a regular basis. *** Thanks, Justin! 5 years ago today I published the first post on Charles & Hudson. This blog started out as an exploration into blogging as well as an opportunity to discuss and share home improvement ideas, products and tips. At the time I was working at This Old House which I still consider the premiere and original reality TV series. Blogging was a bit of a hobby back then and allowed me to have an outlet to explore Movable Type, social media and provide a platform for me to network both personally and professionally. I have to thank Charles & Hudson for opening many doors including my time at PointClickHome.com and although PCH is no longer around and shelter magazines continue to fold, it's been an amazing ride being part of the new media that has taken hold in the design/decor/diy space. Over the past 5 years I've developed some incredible relationships both online and off and I'd like to thank the following folks for helping get Charles & Hudson to where it is today. But, as of this writing, we’ve expanded our offering of area rugs at BuildDirect. As such, I thought it might be a good idea to go into more detail on area rugs, and where they come from.
And what I found out about rugs is that they share a parallel history with mosaic tile and with traditional tapestry making too. More specifically, rugs are not only a decorative addition to a space, they also have been instrumental in playing another part in the development of civilization; storytelling, and the preservation of cultural histories. All kinds of textiles including rugs were used as decorative storytelling in the places where they made rug making into an art form; China, India, Mongolia and Siberia, Persia, and Egypt, dating back for thousands of years. And even in the Western world in Greece, and independently in what is now South America by ancient indigenous cultures in the Amazon Basin and in Mexico, and the Maori peoples in the South Pacific, the making of rugs was an integral part of life. Because of this storytelling aspect that predated written histories, the art of weaving is an ancient human activity.  Religious symbols, or symbols that pertain to mythology or even pictorial representations of significant events, were included in the designs. As much as they were about decoration and practicality, area rugs were objects that symbolized a membership in a wider culture, and having a shared history with one’s neighbors. They represented a cultural inheritance, and a sense of community. And some of these symbols and cultural signifiers endure today, even if the contexts are lost.
Even though many of the designs today are created through the use of computer applications, some of the higher quality area rugs are still spun by hand in much the same way as they’ve always been made. The very concept of grades hold all kinds of cultural weight, with one grade being all about how one particular one is better than another, kind of like how we think of grades in school. The word ‘grade’ invites you to draw a quality comparison between one thing and another. When it comes to wood flooring, this often leads to misconceptions about quality. It leads some to think that a ’select’ grade is a safer purchase in terms of durability than a ‘natural’ or ‘folk’ grade. Here’s something else; when it comes to hardwood flooring, thinking about grades as a measurement of quality of the product isn’t the right way to approach the concept at all. But, that being said, what are grades for hardwood floors in place to tell you as a buyer of wood floors?Like many things, grading is all about your point of view, and your expectations about what a wood floor is. For instance, a lot of people love the look of wood grain. But, they also want a certain sense of uniformity, and with a consistency in the grain patterns of the floor they’re looking to buy. They want tasteful refinement. In doing their research, they’ve learned that a certain measurement of color variation in a wood floor is to be expected. And they know that certain species (like cherry and maple, for instance), have naturally occurring patterning and ‘beauty marks’ no matter what section of the lumber their floor will be taken from. After all, wood floors are natural materials. And nature is all about variation, and about natural characteristics. Yet, when it comes to the floor they imagine in their heads, it’s a more refined and and continuous floor color range and grain pattern they want. So, in looking for a hard maple wood floor for instance, they might go with this kind of look: 
But, this is only one perspective. Another point of view when it comes to wood floors is the embrace of random patterns, colors, and character. Buyers with this kind of look in mind are interested in really obvious patterning like larger knot holes, mineral streaking, and other sources of color variation. For these buyers, the wood floor they imagine in their minds tells the story of where their floor comes from; The Wild, and all of the wild artistry that a real wood floor can afford. This type of buyer, also looking for a hard maple floor, may be more interested in this kind of look: 
These two examples are the same species. The boards in a chosen batch, decided upon by a grading system, have been taken from sections of the lumber to meet the myriad of expectations of the buying public along a spectrum. And this, friends, is what wood floor grading is all about. The industry recognizes that buyers have different expectations of what a wood floor should look like. It’s not that one grade is better quality than another. It’s that a specified grade appeals to a certain set of aesthetics. There are a few characteristics that set the standards: - large knotholes, which are always ’secure’ (they don’t pop out)
- small knotholes, or ‘pinholes’
- mineral streaking and other color variation
So a ’select’ grade will have fewer instances of this. And a ‘natural’ grade (sometimes called ‘folk’ or ‘rustic’) will feature more of these characteristics proudly. Wood floors are diverse.
