Looking to give your house a much-needed facelift? Most homeowners don’t know this, but amping up your curb appeal doesn’t have to cost more than a few hundred dollars. In fact, it shouldn't. Here are some tips on how to make small changes now to improve those first impressions later.

Touch-Up that Chipped Paint

Most people tend to neglect their home’s exterior paint until it's time for an all-over paint job. But this is harmful for two reasons. One, let's be real, chipped paint is just unattractive. And two, it can expose the structure to moisture and damaging ultra-violet light.

When purchasing the paint, it's important to stick to higher-end water-based paints. While these are pricier, they last five years longer than the more inexpensive brands. They're also more environmentally friendly and easier to use.

In order to match up the color exactly, make sure to bring in a sample paint chip that can be run through an optical computer. But beware of overbuying; you should only need one gallon of paint and one gallon of oil-based primer. After all, if the areas needing touch-ups require more paint than that, it's probably time for a whole new coat.

Give Your Yard Some TLC

Looking to bring your newly planted flowers to center-stage? A fresh layer of mulch can help with that.

Instead of heading to your local home improvement store, have your landscape supply store deliver the mulch to you. Not only is it easier than schlepping a ton of bags all the way home, but it'll ensure that the mulch is local and won't introduce any foreign diseases to your plants.

While cedar, pine, cypress and hardwood will all finish the job quite nicely, make sure to get 100 percent bark. The alternative is whole-log mulch, which can damage plants.

What next? A garden spade can help outline the space where the mulch is going to go, and a pitchfork, wheelbarrow and rake can be used to spread it all out. But if you don't want to dedicate your weekend to hauling mulch around your yard, a handyman can always complete the job for anywhere from $500 to $1,500.

Protect Your Deck from the Elements

If you'd rather not rebuild your deck in a few years, spending some time sealing it instead.

First things first: always seal with stain, not paint. If you use paint, then you'll have to re-sand every single time it needs to be touched up. Instead, use an oil-based stain that can easily soak into the wood.

At a loss for color choices? Decide whether you want your deck to look natural (clear stain) or more painted (solid stain). If you go the natural route, make sure to choose one that has UV blockers to keep the wood underneath protected. In addition to the stain, you'll also need to buy a scrub brush (or power washer) and a wood cleaner.

So what are you waiting for? Get off that couch and go tackle those projects you've been putting off. It'll be worth it. Seriously.

Плоские селитебные крыши: Самомоднейшая технология может бросить вызов матушку-природу

Posted: 06 May 2010 09:24 AM PDT

Thanks to modern thermoplastic technology, roof-sized membranes can be laid over non-sloping roof areas and usually outwit water's urge to penetrate where it pools.

Because mountains are peaked, water runs down their slopes to lower elevations. Apparently this lesson in nature was missed by Frank Lloyd Wright and other architects who insist on putting flat roofs on homes.

Of course, most residential roofs are peaked and shed rainwater efficiently. But some architects periodically act out their nonconformist impulses and cap a structure with a series of flat roofs. A homeowner sometimes will do the same, but not as a design statement. Rather, it is the simplest solution to roofing over that small addition he had tacked onto the rear of his home.

The problem is, of course, that water tends to pool on flat, or nearly flat, surfaces and pooled water is a constant structural threat until it evaporates. In some seasons and places, evaporation is not an everyday process. The longer the water pools on an upper surface, the greater the likelihood it will work its way under roofing until it is dripping on a lower surface, your kitchen table, perhaps.

Note: Not all flat roofs leak. Some never leak. On the other hand, some never seem to stop leaking. This is the reality: The chances that a level roof will introduce water into your home are far greater than that a sloping roof will. It's a nature thing.

Nevertheless, if your brother-in-law the architect has convinced you to build a flat-roofed house, don't despair. The flat-roofing industry has you covered. It has evolved in recent decades. No longer must a southwest-styled ranch house be topped with layers of tarpaper underneath a hardened layer of tar with captured gravel.

One-ply membranes fabricated of PVC or PVC alloys are factory assembled and applied to a roof with few if any seams. The membranes resist fire, chemical, wind and punctures and some come with a lifetime warranty. Which is to say, if they do leak, you don't have to pay the repair bill.

They can be ordered in "cool" energy-efficient white that reflects the sun's heat – bouncing back as much as 90 percent of it – rather than absorbing the heat as old black tar roofs do. The membranes are available in various shades or with variegated pebble-like patterns. In many cases, your new roof can be installed over your existing one. And, whether it is new construction or an old fix, a smelly tar-boiling unit will not show up at your place during the job.

So a flat roof on your house or addition is a viable option. But be forewarned: All this slick technology is necessary because Mother Nature doesn't like flat – and sometimes she still gets her way.

Flat roofing:

  • Flat roofs are more vulnerable to leaking than sloping roofs.
  • Modern methods and compositions effectively deter leaks.
  • White "cool" roofing reflects heat, unlike old tar roofing.
  • Some residential applications come with a lifetime warranty.

Зашкурите и Re-Finish ваши деревянные пола

Lately, we’ve talked a bit about de-cluttering, and about ways to transform your yards in time for spring. Now for those of you with wood flooring that has perhaps been around a while or who have invested in new but unfinished wood flooring, it may be the perfect time of year to bring them back to life, too.

One clear advantage is that Springtime allows those windows and doors to remain open, and furnaces to be off, which cuts down on the issues of dust levels caused during the re-sanding process. And of course, when it comes to re-finishing, Springtime weather allows those windows to stay open, allowing the finish to dry faster, too.

But, how do get started on a job like this? Well, here are a few pointers to help you transform a drab, or perhaps newly installed but unfinished, wood floor into a thing of beauty just in time for Spring …

One thing you’ll want to decide is whether or not your budget allows you to hire a professional to do this job for you. It’s a commitment, and sometimes a professional can cut down on time and on the possibility of errors, too. But, assuming that you are going to do the job yourself, here is a list of considerations when contemplating the sanding and refinishing of a wood floor.

1. Put together a list of materials. Lists are helpful in making sure that everything you need all down the line is on hand. Think about safety (dust masks, goggles), basic materials (brooms, dustpans, rollers, brushes), off-of-the-shelf products (sandpaper, finish), and also some of the larger items that you’ll have to rent (a belt sander, edger, a shop vac, large fans). Talk to your local retailer about the tools you’ll need to rent to get the best results for your particular job.

2. Prepare For A Dust Storm. Sanding your floor will be the first step in the re-finishing process. Sanding the surface of a wood floor ensures that the wood will absorb the finish. But, it’s a dusty job. Clearing your room of furniture and wall hangings, and making sure that you’ve good adequate ventilation, too are great first steps. Apart from allowing dust to escape to the outside, you’ll still need to contain it as much as possible so that it doesn’t find its way to other rooms of your home. Close your vents to keep dust from getting into other rooms. Hang bedsheets on walls and in doorways to prevent the same.

3. Ensure Good Ventilation. With all of the dust, and later the fumes of the finish, you will need to make sure that airflow into your work space is a priority.

4. Inspect Your Floor For Nails and Debris. If you’ve got an older floor, materials on the surface of your wood floor that may affect the way the floor absorbs the finish will need to be removed, as will exposed nail heads that will kick up sparks if the sander hits it.

5. Keep The Sander Moving! Once the sander is on, it’s important to cover your floor evenly. Don’t let the sander gouge your wood floor. Ask your retailer about the range of sandpaper grades you’ll need. Generally, you’ll start with a coarser grade, and graduate to a finer one. But, at every stage, make sure that an evenly sanded floor is your goal, which you’ll be able to achieve as long as the sander is in motion at all times when it’s on.

6. Get Into The Corners. The belt sander will allow you to cover the open spaces. But an edger will allow you to reach the edges, and other more detailed areas.

7. Make Sure The Finish is Stirred Not Shaken. Fight against your James Bond tendencies when it comes to your finish. Shaken finish creates air bubbles which makes even layers of finish to be more of a challenge. And you want as even a spread as you can get.

8. Let Your Finish Dry Properly. Wait about three hours before applying the next coat. Once it is applied, the second coat should be allowed to stand for up to three days, so I’d advise you to …

9. Take a Holiday! Depending on the scale of the job, you may or may not have to make arrangements to be elsewhere while the finish is curing. Why not reward yourself with a weekend away? You’ll return relaxed to a floor that you can be proud of!

For more information, be sure to read this post by Extreme How-To’s Mark Clement which goes into even more detail about how to sand and refinish wood floors. Also, check out this post about how to refinish wood floors, too.

Cheers!

Rob.
