Posted: 16 Sep 2010 09:00 AM PDT

A designated study space is important for all children, no matter what age they are or how complex the curriculum they're participating in. The space doesn't have to be large, but it does need to be functional. It should be a calm and inviting space to help your child get their homework done better and faster. The right study space won't necessarily make children excited about doing homework, but it will make it much easier for them.

1. Make the Space Comfortable
If a child is not comfortable in their study space, they likely won't stay there, or feel incentive to continue using it. Make sure the area is not too hot or too cold. If it is near a window, make sure there are blinds or shades to cut down on glare. The space should be easy to keep quiet, out of the way of heavily trafficked areas of the home when possible. The area should promote relaxation, concentration and focus, but should not be so comfortable as to promote sleep.

2. Think Ergonomics
The space should have a desk area or a small table for a workspace. When the child sits down, his desk or table should be at waist height, with the ability to rest his elbows on the surface without bringing his shoulders down. Feet should be able to rest flat on the floor, even your child does not want to sit that way at all times. If the chair does not accommodate his height, use a pillow. If his feet do not rest on the floor, use a box to prop them up. If a computer is in the work area, try to keep it positioned to where it is at least 18'' but no more than 30'' away from your child, and consider using an anti-glare screen protector to reduce eye strain.

3. Keep the Space Well Lit
Children who have to squint to read or have trouble seeing what they've written will get tired quickly. They will also become more easily distracted with the low lighting. Make sure there is overhead light available, and if necessary, use a desk lamp to add more lighting.

4. Make it Easy to Spread Out
If children can't easily spread out their work, it will be difficult for them to focus and get through it. If there is a computer on the desk, move it to the side so the children have room to use pen and paper, too.

5. Keep the Area Well Stocked with Supplies
Make sure all the supplies children need are in the area and within reach. This includes: pens, pencils, a calculator, scissors, crayons, markers, ruler, compass, etc. Any utensils and materials needed to complete homework should be in this area. This will prevent you and your children from having to go on the great supply hunt when it is time to get homework done. Older children should have a calendar, a planner, or a to-do list to help them keep track of all the tasks they need to get done.

6. Organize the Space
Use any number of organizational items such as: boxes, post it notes, shelves, labels, and folders to organize the area. Supplies can be kept in a drawer or in a desktop organizer; let your child pick out an organizer in her favorite color or in a cool shape. This will help keep the area tidy and easy to use each day when he comes back to it.

7. Decorate the Space
Here comes the fun part! This is where the space gets to become inviting and special. Decorate it with pictures of family, friends, and other things that are meaningful. Depending on how old your children are, they will likely spend a lot of time in this area, so it is important for them to enjoy it. Any favorite items or lucky charms should be close by for inspiration and motivation. Consider a small poster, stickers, or even a bulletin board for them to decorate on their own.

8. Remove Other Distractions
When utilizing the study space, take a second to turn off all instant message communications, social networking Web sites, TVs, radios, and MP3 players. Though the kids may claim noise helps, background noise and potential distractions from these types of things will defeat the purpose of the study space. If noise is necessary, try using a white noise machine to help him increase focus.

A study space doesn't have to be a horrendous task. It doesn't have to be expensive. Involve the kids in the development of the space so they feel more like it belongs to them. With the right preparations and items on hand, you can design the study space in just a few hours. It may be a good idea not to allow other activities to take place in the designated study space, to help your children associate the area with homework – not playtime.

What do your kids think of the study space you've created for them? Tell us in the comments section!

Modern rocking chairs give a whole new meaning to the word rocker. Stereotypically speaking, those who use rocking chairs are divided into two groups, the elderly and new moms and dads. Modern rocking chair designs smash those stereotypes. It should be noted here that older people and new parents will find some very appealing and comfortable chairs among these new rockers. Today’s designers bring exciting new looks and ergonomically sound principles to the centuries-old rocking chair.

Not all materials used in modern rockers are new. Woods, some of them antique, from familiar birch and oak to more exotic ebony are still used to create beautiful chairs with steam bent runners. The most natural of modern rocking chair designs come from the sculpting of one or more woods. Leather, especially Italian leather, is very is often used to cover the seats and backs of the chairs.

Many designers do make use of manmade materials like polished aluminum and stainless steel, polyurethane and modern fiber meshes to develop new and exciting curves and flowing lines for their innovative rockers.

Modern rocking chairs with their stylish designs can fit easily into an already established modern interiors or a newly designed living space and be enjoyed by each the home’s inhabitants no matter their age.

Posted: 15 Sep 2010 11:21 AM PDT

Today’s post is from Rob Jones, blogger and social media practitioner of online building materials company BuildDirect, which deals in large quantities of kitchen countertops, among other building products. So, this post is all about countertops and the advantages and challenges presented by a select variety of them …

***

The kitchen is in many ways the nerve center of your home. Sure, you spend a lot of time in living rooms, dens and family rooms. But, the kitchen is a major social center, household business hub, and of course a place to prepare food both out of necessity, and – for you culinary artists out there – out of love. So given how important your kitchen is, it makes sense to take a look at kitchen surfaces, particularly kitchen countertops, and find out what makes the most sense when you’re thinking of remodeling.

When you’re doing your research about kitchen countertops, the biggest areas you’ll want to look at will be these four:

  • Look and feel
  • Durability and longevity
  • Maintenance demand
  • Upfront cost vs. long-term investment

All of these are important, and you’ll probably need to think about which order these aspects should go in. Remember though, the issue of cost is very much connected to the durability and longevity elements. For instance, a kitchen countertop that costs more upfront but is hard-wearing and durable may actually save you money down the road — simply because you probably won’t ever have to replace it. This is at least part of what I mean when I say ‘long-term investment.’

After the choices of colors and styles are decided upon, striking the balance between these four areas should be a big part of what lies at the heart of your decision.

With that in mind, here are a select group of 4 popular kitchen countertop materials that you might want to consider when doing your comparative research.

#1 – Laminate & Formica

Laminate countertops have a couple of obvious advantages. First, they tend to be on the lower end of the budgetary spectrum. Second, you can install laminate countertops relatively simply, assuming some basic DIY skills. And third, they’re easily cleaned with no need to seal them. If you need a new kitchen surface quickly, and relatively inexpensively with a short turnaround time, laminate countertops may be a solution to consider.

Some challenges you may face falls under the durability and longevity question, with edges of the laminate chipping easily, and with the adhesive often losing its hold in these areas as well. Where the short term advantages, including cost, are worthy of your attention, the probability of having to replace them later is often higher than it would be with other materials.

#2 – Epoxy Resin

Epoxy resin is a manufactured item designed primarily with functionality in mind. Epoxy resin countertops are designed to be scratch-resistant, easy to clean, and non-absorbent. All of these features are definite virtues in the kitchen. Further, the materials which are derived from dense polymers, are also treated with anti-UV features to keep them from fading. Basically, epoxy resin countertops are great for low-maintenance functionality. If that element scores highest on your list, they may be the choice for you.

The challenges with epoxy resin lies in the ‘look and feel’ department for many people, with an often less than aesthetically pleasing feel. A common observation is related to a perceived look that isn’t quite as warm and inviting as a natural surface. And of course, even if the material is robust and scratch-resistant, reports of visible scratches in epoxy resin over the long-term should be taken into account when it comes to long-term value for money.

#3 – Concrete

There is a reason that the word ‘concrete’ is synonymous with permanence, and that’s because it’s a very robust material that can be expected to last a long time. Further, concrete is very versatile for both indoor and outdoor applications. So, if you’re thinking about building an outdoor summer kitchen, surfacing with concrete is a great choice. In terms of look, a lot of people really go for the smooth, uniform surface that concrete countertops offer.

The biggest challenge with concrete countertops are twofold. One, they’re very labor intensive if you decide to make them yourself from scratch, and are of course then very expensive when you hire someone to do it for you. And two, they tend to show signs of wear earlier on, particularly if you’ve got kids. You can read more about the challenges and advantages of concrete countertops by AskTheBuilder.com’s Tim Carter, who knows a thing or two about all kinds of surfacing.

#4 – Natural Stone – Granite, Marble, Travertine, Quartz & More

At this point, I should offer a bit of disclosure: the company I work for, BuildDirect, has favored natural stone surfaces for kitchen counters and vanities for a long time. Therefore, take what’s written here with that in mind as you embark on your own research on kitchen countertops.

But, here’s the thing, everyone. Natural stone is more than a surface solution; it’s an investment most likely to produce a return. Further, you can buy the counters in traditional slabs, or in relatively easy to install kits. The continuous smooth lines of slabs is a favored look for most people. And the kits, which give you the choice of creating grout lines or with tiles flush against each other for a more seamless look, often avoids the risk of cracking and breaking during shipment or installation. Natural stone countertop kits also empower you to install your new countertop yourself, like any other tile job.

The challenge most associated with natural stone is also twofold. One; the materials are very heavy. When it comes to ordering slabs, the transport, lifting, and the cutting of the materials should best be left to the professionals. This can add an extra layer of cost to your budget if you want that continuous, seamless look that a lot of people go for.

And two, natural stone requires more of your attention when it comes to maintenance. This includes proper sealing and occasional resealing of the stone. It also requires fast action when it comes to spills of acidic liquids like tomato sauce, red wine, and fruit juices. These substances can create stains that aren’t impossible to remove exactly, but involves more energy in getting rid of them later if they’re left to set.

Despite these challenges, natural stone surfaces offer some of the hardest (specifically in granite and quartz), and most naturally heat-resistant materials on earth. Their unique natural patterning makes each installation unique and offers something beyond function and exceptional look; resale value. And again, the presence of natural stone adds value to the whole property, which can often help to absorb the extra cost to some degree.

So, taking the principles of look and feel, durability and longevity, maintenance demand, and long-term and short term costs and return in mind, hopefully this guide will give you a bit direction on where to start your continuing personal research.

Here’s another important tip. When you’re shopping, make sure that you get a good dialogue going with your chosen vendor through out the buying process. Ask them about installation issues, and shipping issues too. Also talk about things like warranties, product support, and maintenance tips. Make sure that your vendor, and your installation professional (if you hire one) will support your purchase and your project the whole way along.

Whatever you decide, enjoy your new countertops!

Posted: 15 Sep 2010 09:00 AM PDT

Fire is such a primal thing, both the key to our survival yet also as a potential threat to our homes and possessions. Fire can even pose a threat to our lives, if we’re careless. As such, when you continue to build a home, thinking about how to minimize the risks and about what the received wisdom is concerning fire safety should be paramount.

Today’s guest is from Sally Davidson, a writer interested in all aspects of fire science and home safety with regards to fire prevention. Sally is involved in the promotion of fire science programs in universities and college across the United States. In this post, Sally goes over a few simple preventative measures that you can take to reduce the risk of fire in your home.

***

Fire-proofing and fire prevention are things you must give serious consideration to, even if you don't live in a fire-prone area, fireproofing your home is an essential necessity that you cannot ignore.

Fire may be useful, but if it gets out of hand, it causes more destruction than you can ever imagine. The best way to beat fire is to take every preventive measure you possibly can, starting with proofing your home against fire. If you're wondering how to go about this important task, read on:

  1. Install fire extinguishers at home and ensure that all those at home know how to use them in case of a fire.
  2. Find out how you can fireproof your roof based on the material it is made of.
  3. If your home is surrounded by greenery, ensure that they are watered well and kept moist so that they don't burn easily even if they catch fire.
  4. Don't hoard dry leaves and other junk that could easily catch fire.
  5. If your home has a fireplace, use grates ensure that sparks don't jump out and set your carpet on fire. Clean and maintain your chimney regularly.
  6. If you use stoves, don't use flammable liquids to start or accelerate a fire; ensure that they are placed in rooms that are well-ventilated
  7. If your home is made mostly of wood, ensure that the wood is fire-treated.
  8. Install sprinkler systems and smoke alarms – these could be the difference between life and death because they alert you to a fire and give you time to escape, and because they put out small fires before they get out of control
  9. Before using a heater, ensure that it is firmly fixed on the floor and that it is steady and will not tip over.

Besides these measures, ensure that:

  1. Your family knows and is able to follow a fire drill in case of emergencies – this means identifying the closest and safest ways out of the home in case of a fire and keeping cool even though the flames are spreading.
  2. Your home is easily accessible to firefighters, especially if you live in areas where roads are not clearly visible and if your home is off regular tracks.
  3. You use fire responsibly – don't throw away matches that are still lit or glowing with embers, don't leave burning candles unattended or near objects that are flammable, don't spill gasoline or store it unsafely, and so on.
  4. Use electrical appliances carefully and according to instructions so that they don't catch fire. Clean and maintain them regularly so that they don't act up.
  5. Don't light up your barbecue oven indoors.
  6. Ensure that your smoke detectors and sprinklers are in good working condition through regular maintenance measures.

It's better to be safe than sorry; so if you haven't fireproofed your home, get down to it immediately.

Posted: 14 Sep 2010 02:45 PM PDT

Some of the world’s best cooking has come out of the smallest kitchens, including the finest French fare. Yet trying to create brilliance in a teensy kitchen can be frustrating to the point that we cook less altogether, despite how much we love the activity. Small kitchens can either be claustrophobic, messy and under- or overstocked—or they can be efficient, pleasant and perfectly uncomplicated, producing food you can be proud of.

Here are three tips to get you on your way to running as tightly as [the galley kitchen of] a ship.

1. Too much and too little are not enough.

Kitchens that have either too many appliances or incomplete equipment can debilitate the space's potential. Take a weekend and clear out everything from your kitchen, set it all into logical groups and stations (baking, canned soups, knives, etc).

Pull out anything that:

  • You never use.
  • Takes up room but performs only one function (huge homemade bread maker, we're looking at you).
  • Is either broken or redundant.

It takes surprisingly little to produce a lot of good stuff. Check out the Smithsonian’s replica of Julia Child’s efficient kitchen equipment.

2. Create Stations

Take notes from professionals that require efficiency and stations for their work, such as surgeons, painters and the military. No matter how limited your cabinet and storage space, you can create logic and flow. Suggested stations? Baking. Spices. Canned goods and storage. Knives, can openers and graters. Dinnerware. Glassware. Servingware. Even the smallest station can matter, such as organized drawer bins.

3. Make clean-up easy.

Chances are that a small kitchen means no dishwasher. Entice yourself to cook more by streamlining the other end of the process. Stock a basket under the sink with gloves, scrubbers, good soap and flour sack towels for lying out extra dishes to dry.

As you cook, place used dishes and materials into a square plastic bin of hot, soapy water in your sink. If you have a one-sided sink, move that bin next to the sink for soaking and scrubbing beforehand. Eliminating about two-thirds of your clean-up time will make a difference in your attitude towards your kitchen.

Good luck, and as Julia herself always said, bon appetit!

Posted: 14 Sep 2010 09:00 AM PDT

Looking to get technology on your side for your next home improvement job? Take a look at these 9 apps to help you do just that.

1. iHandy Carpenter
The iHandy Carpenter app is the ideal tool for any handyman interested in clean lines and professional results. Replacing many of the standard tools that are used for odd jobs that require precision, iHandy Carpenter acts as a basic ruler, a plumb bob to measure the verticality of a wall, a spirit level (aka bubble level) to gauge the horizontal level of a surface and a slew of other calculating carpenter functions.

Although this app replaces some of the more archaic and affordable tools in your collection, it's a major space saver and, when calibrated correctly, offers precision results for only $1.99.

2. Color Snap
If you're looking to tackle a custom paint job, the Color Snap app is a useful little tool for picking just the right color for your project. Rather than running back and forth from the paint store and reviewing endless color swatches in the process, Color Snap allows you to take a picture of an object whose color you like and within the app, you can then match it to the closest Sherwin-Williams paint color possible. In the end, Color Snap can save you all kinds of time when selecting your specific shades.

3. Handyman Sidekick
One of the most difficult elements of DIY home improvements is accurately projecting the amount of materials you'll require to complete a project. That said, the Handyman Sidekick app is a multipurpose number-cruncher that features a slick calculator for projects involving painting, wallpapering, flooring and gardening. By entering a few basic numbers into the app, Handyman Sidekick will be able to tell you exactly how much paint you'll need to cover your walls or how much tile is needed to tile your kitchen floor, thus minimizing unnecessary overages and waste and saving you money as a result.

4. ID Wood
When it comes to the various varieties of wood that can be used in home improvement projects, the possibilities are endless and any misdiagnosis can cost you. For example, if you're buying a treatment agent for your wood floor, you'll want to know what species you're dealing with to maximize your results and if you're building furniture, you'll want to know what variety will best suit your design.

Knowing this, the ID Wood app was designed for just this purpose; it will help you identify the wood species through its full color library of 160 varieties, it gives a description of the wood's properties and its favored applications, it provides a glossary of lumber terms and conversion tools and it even offers tips and best cutting practices for working with each type of wood.

For just around $3, the ID Wood app will take you to school and teach you everything there is to know about selecting your species and properly working with the woods.

5. DIY Concrete
Similar to the Handyman Sidekick above, DIY Concrete is a handyman's app that helps you estimate the amount of concrete you'll need for any given job. With the touch of a few buttons, DIY Concrete allows you to input some basic project dimensions and then provides results for the estimated volume of concrete you'll need (in cubic meters or 20KG pre-mixed bags) and the expected cost of your supplies. For a couple dollars, this app can help you buy only what you need and save you big.

6. Real Tools
The Real Tools app is much like the iHandy Carpenter; however, it claims to be a bit more robust. Offering 18 tools in total (including the spirit level, plumb bob, ruler, etc), Real Tools goes the extra mile by offering a flashlight function with heightened illumination and a virtual tape measure. In all, the Real Tools app claims to replace about $1,200 worth of tools in your garage and even better, it all fits in your pocket.

7. Gardening Tool Kit
For the handyman of the garden variety, Gardening Tool Kit is a helpful app that can maximize your gardening experience by offering all kinds of information and advice on planting and general care of over 800 varieties of herbs, vegetables and flowers. If you're new to the gardening arena, this app will make sure you plant the right kind of plants in the right environments and tells you all you'll need to know when it comes to maintaining your garden and yielding the best results.

8. Home Depot
Of course, you can't spell "handyman" without Home Depot – one of the world's largest handyman allies. Knowing this, Home Depot stores have developed an app that puts their store and their expansive inventory at your fingertips. If you're working on a project and need a particular part or tool to complete the job, the Home Depot app allows you to look it up in their database, price it and buy it (or arrange a pickup).

9. Task This
Last but not least is a project management app that ultimately helps DIY handymen stay on task and complete their jobs in a timely manner. The beauty of the Task This app is that it can sync with task-this.com and together, they team up to provide you with various tools and reminders for staying the course: calendars, check lists, shopping lists, deadlines with automated reminders, etc. By using the Task This app, you'll be focused every step of the way as it holds your hand until you reach the finish line.

  • Climate control: Mechanisms for controlling temperature, humidity, ventilation and light must be considered.
  • Storage: The size and expected growth of the wine collection will determine the amount of racking to be included in the cellar.
  • Tasting: If a wine tasting room or area is to be included, then thought must be given to selection of a table and chairs or bar and stools.
  • Design: Whether the goal is an old world look or a more modern style, materials are available to create an environment to suit any taste.

In this second installment about lighting the most high-profile rooms in your home, lighting blogger Emily Widle talks about a room in which we spend quite a lot of time, even if we’re sleeping at the time; the bedroom.

How can you make that very important room stylish, functional, and (maybe most importantly) conducive to relaxing, and even personal safety? Read on, gentle readers, as Emily walks you through it …

***

The bedroom is all about mood lighting. To create a peaceful oasis that is comfortable for reading, watching television, or just relaxing, install dimmers for your general lighting source (whether that is a single ceiling fixture or recessed lights throughout the room). You'll be able to adjust the light levels to control the mood of the room. It's important to have soft, gentle light in the bedroom for relaxing in the evening, but you'll also want the option of bright light for getting dressed and ready for the day early in the morning.

Remember to also create several focused task light sources for reading. Most people have lamps on the bedside tables, but why not try for a more unique look? A wall mounted reading light will free up space on your bedside table for reading material and decorative items. If you have an armchair or another area in the room used for reading, be sure to incorporate either a lamp or a wall-mounted light. Focused light is important for reading to avoid eye strain.

Night lights are not just for children's bedrooms; in fact, they are important for safety lighting, especially for homes with older adults. Having a low intensity light near the bed for late night trips to the bathroom will prevent falls. Also, a night light in the room helps you avoid waking others in the room in the middle of the night with the glare of a bedside lamp.

For the ultimate bedroom lighting design, install a fiber optic star ceiling kit and transform your ceiling into the night sky. You can even emulate constellations to truly make it feel like you're sleeping under the stars. This is a fantastic idea for nurseries and children's bedrooms.

Thanks again, Emily! Be sure to catch the next installment next Monday, all about lighting in your kitchen!

Cheers!

Swedish style interiors capture a natural light and airy feel. This emphasis on pale colors and capturing as much light as possible is evident whether you choose a classic or country look with lots of antiques or the ever popular Swedish modern style. King Gustav III developed a distinct Swedish style when he fell for the neo-classical looks so popular in Europe during the late 1700’s. His countrymen eagerly adapted the style to their own stations in life and Gustavian Swedish style was born.

Today, this interior style continues to be popular and is often combined with modern Swedish elements which blend well with antiques or the superb reproduction furniture currently available. This melding of furniture periods works well to create casual yet elegant rooms with a distinctive Swedish style. Some design elements to include if you’re going for your own interpretation of a Gustavian interior:

  • Think light, air and open spaces. Create the perfect background walls with whites, creams or the palest of pale shades of gray, green or blue.
  • Choose light stained or painted wood floors.
  • Showcase painted furniture, preferably distressed white or pale gray.
  • Include lots of lighting and if at all possible hang a crystal chandelier and add wall sconces in every room.
  • Hang window coverings that allow natural light to flood your rooms.
  • Use natural textured fabrics like linen or cotton in white or pale neutrals for upholstered pieces, bedding and accessories.

Settling into your new life as a live-in student? Or maybe you’re a parent to one, and you’re looking for ideas to suggest as to how to make the new home away from home more welcoming than the institutional walls of university or college can provide for the student closest to your heart. Either way, read on.

Decorating your dorm room can be a real challenge, especially if you have to share. Take a look at your new roomie's color choices before you try to figure out some sort of cohesive style. So before you approach her about décor, sneak a peek at the stuff she has lying around.

Even if you’re into hot Caribbean casual and she’s into vampire black on black, you can find a compromise with a sophisticated geometric black and white motif that features bright splashes of color on your side of the room. Broach the subject, and if she’s not interested, just do your own thing. At least you tried, right?

One good way to pick a complementary color scheme is to find a patterned piece, like a pillow, bedspread, graphic, or even a shirt and select three colors with light, medium, and dark values to use as your primary color palette. You can add other colors later, but base the major components of your design on these three colors.

  • The light color is going to be your background, the walls. Most rental spaces are painted white, but it’s usually ok to spice it up with a pale color. Just check the rental agreement, and when in doubt, ask. If you can’t paint, hang a curtain that covers a whole wall in a dramatic color or pick up some clingy wall decorations, no sticky residue, no problem.
  • The medium color should be primary in your big pieces – the bedspread or comforter, the curtains, maybe an accent rug.
  • The dark, or intense, color is your pop. Use it sparingly in pillows and decorative objects. With intense colors, a little goes a long way.

Making a plan
Decorating your dorm room must include function as well as style, so once you’ve decided on the color scheme, start thinking about what you need from the room. Furniture needs are pretty basic. Bed, desk/table, bookshelves, cooking station (if you’re allowed to have a microwave or toaster oven), a couple of chairs or a small couch if room permits, somewhere to put your electronics, and maybe a chest of drawers for your clothes.

You don’t have much space, so you need to get a lot of bang for your buck with double-duty pieces. Some examples:

  • A low bookshelf the width of the bed can serve as a room divider, support a flat screen TV on a turntable for watching in bed or other seating areas, and provide necessary shelving. Extend the top with a hinged dropdown and gain a table or a desk that can be dropped when not in use.
  • You’re going to need storage…lots and lots of storage. Consider raising the bed. You can buy bed risers that will lift the bed 6 inches higher for about $15, and then slide your choice of boxes or lined baskets underneath for efficient storage. If you’re really handy, consider a loft bed. It’s easy and cheap to build using plywood and 2x4s. Anchor it to the wall or support it on legs like a bunk bed. This gives you a whole range of under-bed options, including a comfy couch big enough for friends to visit.
  • Upholstered cubes are a great option to add storage and seating options. They can be used as seats, ottomans or handy little side tables, and if you need space, they can be stacked out of the way or pushed under a table. If there’s really limited floor space, consider some cute and colorful folding chairs and hang them on the wall when not in use.
  • A multipurpose table that can serve as a desk or workstation, a support for a TV or other entertainment devices, an ironing board or even a place to eat turns your room from bedroom to living space.

Shop!
Wait, I’m getting ahead of myself.

Before you go shopping, you need to measure. Write down measurements for everything you think you’ll need – length of the walls, length and width of your bed, available floor space, size of the window, and if you have a closet that’s just a cubby with no door, the size of the opening – you can curtain or bead it.

Other things to buy:

  • Comforter – solid colors or color-block design will allow you more design choices, but by all means, pick up some fun throw pillows. Since a lot of the time you spend in your room will be spent in bed, get something you really like that’s…well, comforting. Big and puffy and soft, even if you’re a guy.
  • Bed topper – thick memory foam, the best you can afford. Dorm room beds are notoriously uncomfortable. Naturally, you’ll need sheets that can accommodate the deeper mattress.
  • Throw pillows – they’re great for warmth and pop. Get at least five and make them bold and personable.
  • Curtains, or fabric if you’re into DIY. Curtains hung from ceiling to floor will make the room look taller.
  • A white board with an attached marker for the outside of your door so your friends can leave messages and you can let them know where you are.
  • Full length mirror. They’re cheap and easy to come by.
  • Lighting is really important. The dingier the lighting is, the smaller and more cramped the room will look. Great lighting can make even the smallest room bright and homey.
  • Stock up on different sizes of leak-proof zip-lock bags. There’s nothing worse than finding your cookie stash full of creepy-crawlies.

One of the most fun and cheap decorations you can use to cover your walls is: you! Pictures are fun and cheap to print out in varying sizes to add zing to the walls. Pick your most memorable photos of you and your friends and display them on a ribbon board or a wire frame. Another good wall decoration is paint. It’s cheap and you can paint on graphic designs to your heart’s content, just remember to repaint the walls with standard institutional white when it’s time to leave so you’ll get your deposit back.

However you choose to decorate your dorm room, it should express your personality, meet your needs and above all, feel like home. Be sure to bring some things that remind you of home and family to keep you company in your new place.

Slipcover!

Posted: 09 Sep 2010 09:00 AM PDT

Today’s guest post is from Caroline Smith, owner of the website GetSlipcovers.com, which provides more handy hints for using slipcovers around the home. Caroline enjoys trying her hand at various DIY projects. She is particularly interested in green living and likes to find innovative ways to reuse or recycle secondhand items where she can.

***

In my experience, households, especially those with children or pets, can often turn a perfectly lovely couch into a disaster in very short time. Couches can be expensive to replace. It is also not very eco-friendly to get rid of a couch just because the upholstery has seen better days. But at the same time, we all want our homes to look nice and attractive.

Fortunately, I've discovered a frugal and green way to keep my family room furnishing in good condition and up-to-date.

When my sofas begin to show some wear because of grease, juice, jelly, or grass stains, or become ripped or torn from all the roughhousing, I just fit some slipcovers to rejuvenate them. To me, this seems a much more sensible solution than buying brand new furniture and it extends the useful life of my couches by several years.

If you're trying to furnish a new home on a tight budget, I would suggest you do a little second-hand shopping and consider recycling an old couch rather than spend a small fortune purchasing brand new pieces. First, watch for offers on Freecycle.org to see if someone in your local area has a couch offered completely free. Also check the free section of the advertisements at Craigslist and the classified section of the local newspaper.

If these places do not advertise a couch in need of a new home that can be easily recycled with slipcovers, you could visit the local thrift shops. Another option would be to ask your friends or relatives if they have an old couch in their basement or storage area which they could donate to your cause. With slipcovers as your ally, you can recycle almost any couch or chair that can still support weight. In fact, friends often comment on my wonderful eclectic taste, and I proudly tell them about how I keep my furnishings in such good shape.

At one time, slipcovers were difficult to use, never looked very tidy, and came in a limited range of solid, boring colors, but modern ones are easy to use, come in exciting fabrics, and stay in place quite well. Even when a couch is a little untraditional in shape, good couch covers can be made to fit quite easily.

I use the following tricks to help get a better fit:

• To get a snug fit, use rubber bands around old newspapers and push down between the cushions to take up extra fabric and hold the material firmly in place.

• Lay old towels or blankets on seats or arms to fill in areas where a slipcover fits too loosely.

• Attach a simple Velcro dot along edges to hold them in place.

With these tricks, you should be able to get a great fit even if your furniture has lost some of its stuffing.

By using slipcovers through the years, I've saved a lot of money by extending the useful life of my furniture. In addition, I feel good about making good, conscientious use of natural resources and slowing the progression of trash to an overflowing landfill.

***

Thanks, Caroline!

Cheers,

Rob.

Safety First.

Inside your home, the winter cold can be more hazardous than summer heat, because heating a home can be done in so many different (and potentially unsafe) ways; wood fireplace, gas fireplace, radiant heat, electric heat, oil or gas furnace, boiler, even leaving open an oven! Conversely, there are few ways to cool air temperature; you can either circulate the air, pump in cool air (air conditioning) or pull out warm air (heat pumps).

Turning on that furnace for the first time after months of inactivity is often a shock. It can literally be a shock to your heating system, or it might be a shocking experience when you get your first heating bill! But there are common sense things you can do to get your heating system ready for winter. And, take it from a technician who visits a variety of homes every day, most people do not adequately prepare their home for the peak winter months. Here is some advice to consider before the next big chill.

Service Experts highly recommends having a fire extinguisher next to your furnace, fireplace or heating system at all times, especially when turning on the system for the first time.

Turn your furnace on now.

Don’t wait until it’s freezing out to see if the system works normally. Do it now.

Got it switched on? Good. Now stop and immediately check your common senses:

1. Smell: Does it smell like something is burning? If so, first check to be sure there is not an actual fire or smoke coming from the heating system. If there is, turn the system off immediately (you have that fire extinguisher, right?) Put out any flames or get out. Call emergency fire services or 911.

If there’s not a fire, wait and see if the burning smell subsides. If not, this is a sign that the system needs to be tuned-up.

2. Listen: Does it sound like the system is struggling? Is the noise level or airflow excessive? This is also a sign that the furnace needs to be tuned-up.

3. Feel: Feel the ducts and walls. Is there vibration? If so, I recommend a Performance Inspection to identify the cause.

4. Look: Check your carbon monoxide detector’s readings. If the carbon monoxide alarm goes off or is above 30, turn the system off immediately and call for a furnace Performance Inspection. This is a sign that there could be a potentially hazardous condition. Open windows to air out the house and do not turn the heat on again until it is checked by a professionally qualified, NATE-certified heating technician. You may want to also exit the home until the reading falls below 30.

After you’ve tested your heating system and followed your common senses, you should have a pretty good idea if the system is working normally. By design, any appliance or equipment that heats up can be a potential danger, so always put safety first when it comes to your furnace. Checking your heating system early in the heating season not only helps you know if there are problems now or on the horizon, you can also beat the peak heating repair service rush, when heating repair companies are in high demand.

Remodels

Posted: 07 Sep 2010 10:48 AM PDT

Everyone has their dream home but because the expense often outweighs the reality, we work with what we have and remodel piece by piece. Even with this more frugal approach, it can be costly; therefore, the list below is an inspirational group of visionaries that have taken their remodeling into their own hands, showing us how to save a buck in the process.

(We thought we’d change things up a bit today and present some home renovations you might not be doing in the near future. )

1. Adding Additional Rooms

If you're looking to add an extra bedroom or two to accommodate your growing kin (or some imposing houseguests), you might want to look to this subtle home expansion as an example. Without knocking out a single wall, this crafty architect has expanded their homestead and proved that seven mobile homes are truly better than one.

2. Country Style Front Porch

Adding a custom crafted front deck to your home can add a wonderful aesthetic appeal but it can also cost thousands of dollars when all is said and done. If the expense isn't in your budget, simply go to your local scrap yard and find the best piece of plywood available to you. By laying it down where a deck would have gone, you'll achieve identical results at a fraction of the price. No one will know the difference.

3. Pimping the Patio

If you've done all you can to upgrade the interior of your home, you may want to turn your attention to your patio – with some very simple additions, it can be the recreational talk of the town. Try installing a swimming pool, a state of the art BBQ grill or even something as simple as a classic porch swing for those sultry summer nights.

4. Synthetic Siding

Upgrading the siding on your home is a relatively quick and inexpensive way to give your home a dramatic facelift. Especially with older homes, when the original wood starts to weather, you may want to transition into a more durable synthetic material such as vinyl siding or tin license plates.

5. Beautiful Balcony

If your home has a breathtaking view, you'll want to maximize the amenity with an open-air balcony. However, because building a balcony can cost a pretty penny and requires compliance with a number of building codes, avoid the red tape and put the power in your own hands. After all, a balcony is in the eye of the beholder.

6. Home Theater Experience

With recent advancements in technology, home theaters are becoming a popular trend in the world of home remodeling, as they are more accessible than ever before. All it takes is a flat screen TV and some stadium seating but, for those that have neither, let these photos be a shining example of resourcefulness.

Upgrading your lighting fixtures is an inexpensive remodel that can add immediate value to your home. Yes, even the most mundane space can be brought to life with a modern ceiling fan or a classic chandelier.

8. Upgrading the Appliances

Not all remodels are aesthetic improvements on the surface; sometimes the upgrades exist behind the scenes in the form of appliances or plumbing. Take this alternative as an example; it may not be energy star approved but you can bet this custom hot water heater will only cost as much to operate as a coffee maker.

9. Bonus Room

As your kids get older and more rambunctious, every family needs some sort of bonus room to absorb the recreational overflow. Because this can be an expensive remodel, you'll want to consider ways to minimize your cost of materials – ever thought of repurposing existing structures?

10. Expanded Entry Way

When the walls of your home seem to be closing in, simple expansions can make a world of difference.

Posted: 07 Sep 2010 10:00 AM PDT

Today’s post is one of a 4 part series on lighting in the major rooms of your home; your living room, bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom. They’re written by lighting expert and blogger Emily Widle, a representative of Pegasus Associates Lighting and contributing blogger on their company blog. We’re thrilled to host her insights on lighting here, and we know you will all find these tips useful …

You probably already have general lighting installed in the living room, either with recessed lights, ceiling fixtures, or wall sconces. If you're still trying to light the entire room with a series of table or floor lamps, you should seriously consider installing a more adequate form of general lighting! Regardless, don't forget about these important areas in the living room that benefit immensely from additional lighting.

Picture lighting to accentuate artwork

Artwork: Add emphasis to paintings, framed photographs, quilts, and other wall art with halogen lights. Halogens emit a crisp white light with excellent color rendition, providing the best possible illumination to showcase the details and colors in your wall art. A spotlight effect works well for individual paintings, with one halogen display light focused on each item. Picture lights or display lights can be wall-mounted or ceiling-mounted. If you have a particularly large wall art item, consider using a wall washing effect by placing each halogen light two to three feet apart.

Fireplaces: To create a dramatic effect, add recessed downlights in the ceiling directly over the mantle. The light will fall over the surface of the mantle, creating shadows that will draw attention to the fireplace. Wall sconces placed above the mantle on either side of the fireplace also add an aesthetic effect.

Reading areas: Be sure to incorporate adequate task lighting near coaches and armchairs. Ideally, reading lights should be placed behind the reader's shoulder, to the right or left. A floor lamp, table lamp, or a wall mounted reading light are all great options.

TV area: The glare of the TV screen at night can be straining on the eyes. Since the light levels are constantly changing, your eyes continually have to adapt. Incorporate low-level general lighting near the TV to solve this problem. If you have an armoire or TV stand, you can add mini puck lights under the shelves. This also creates beautiful accent lighting. If your TV is wall-mounted, consider placing a floor lamp nearby with a low level of light.

Cove ceiling: For a unique effect (and if your room allows for it), think about using cove lighting to bounce light indirectly off the ceiling. The accent lighting will provide a soft, warm feel to the space. The top of the cove should be located about 10-14 inches from the ceiling and designed to allow light coming from the cove to wash the ceiling with light.
