Writing today’s guest post is Phillip Rudy, proprietor of Painting Contractor USA, a US nationwide service for sourcing painting contractors of all kinds. But, even Phillip says that in a time when money is tight, sometimes it’s better to consider doing the work yourself.

So, in this post, Phillip talks about how to get started and how to get the results you’re looking for when you’re doing your own painting.

Renovating your home doesn’t have to be an expensive process if you do the work yourself. Often times, homeowners find that they can cut down the cost of adding a new coat of paint to their house by deciding to do the work themselves.

Of course, for any dangerous or difficult paint jobs a professional painting contractor is recommended, but for easy do-it-yourself projects, there are a few ways you can save money.


Find Cheap Paint
The biggest cost of a DIY painting job is the cost of the paint itself because you are not buying paint in such a volume that makes it cheap, which is why a painting contractor can make money because they buy their paint in bulk. While you will need the right type of paint that is appropriate for the area you are painting, you can often trim some money off of the cost of the paint itself.

Many home improvement stores will sell mistinted paint. This is usually paint that was specially mixed, but was not the right shade or texture. You can often find poorly tinted paint in the colors you want being sold for much cheaper than having the paint specially mixed.

Another way to save money on the cost of paint is to purchase it from a recycling center. Many times, recycling centers will accept donations of extra paint from construction companies or from other homeowners. These recycled paints are often considerably cheaper than buying brand new paint and occasionally you can even obtain free paint this way.

Don’t Be Afraid to Make the Investment
The thing about renovating your home is that it never seems to stop. Once you have one room painted you might move onto the next or accidents and wear might have you applying a touch up down the line. One way to save money with DIY painting is to invest in the right equipment, so that when it comes time to paint again you don’t have to worry about the costs of your materials.

You can often get several uses out of one can of paint, so when you have leftovers make sure the cans are properly sealed and stored. One way to ensure this is to keep the paint cans upside down to create a seal over the opening. Paint should be stored inside so that it does not freeze in the winter.

Invest in some nice paint brushes and rollers that will give you multiple uses. Cheaper brushes have the tendency to fall apart after too many uses. When not using brushes, you can store them inside of plastic grocery bags and keep them refrigerated to prevent the bristles from drying out. This will allow you to resume painting later without having to clean out your brushes.

You can also use a plastic bag to line the bottom of your rolling pan. This makes for an easier cleanup and gives you more uses out of a single paint pan. You should also buy cloth sheets to lay down instead of plastic as cloth sheets can be reused multiple times. You can find sheets at your local thrift store for next to nothing.

Organic food can be delicious – special enough to serve at parties – and sustainable table linens can be glamorous. Green choices can actually enhance your guests' experience in your home; rather than inhibit it.

Green products are far from plain and unattractive. The 'green movement' has been embraced by the architecture and design community – so there is an abundance of smartly styled, design-forward items that are also eco-friendly.

Here are some suggestions to keep in mind as you plan this year's parties, starting with the two rooms your guests are sure to see – the kitchen and the powder room. Some changes are quick and simple; while others have a longer-term impact that you can enjoy long after your guests are gone.

A Gorgeous, Green Kitchen
It's a fact – whether you're entertaining two guests or 20 – the one spot they'll most likely congregate is the kitchen. And fortunately, making a green impact in this room is one of the easiest. Here are some tips for updating your kitchen that are friendlier to the planet:

  • If you need to purchase a new table and chairs to accommodate a large dinner party, look for second-hand tables and refurbished chairs with character.
  • Installing cabinetry or built-ins made with certifiable, eco-friendly wood (meaning they were not made from rain forest materials or endangered woods).
  • Consider sourcing quartz counters, which are more eco-friendly than granite
  • Installing bamboo wood flooring, which provides the natural beauty of wood while also being environmentally friendly.
  • If you're setting up the bar for guests, consider a filtering faucet in the kitchen, which will provide filtered water at your sink – virtually eliminating the need for bottled water.

The Perfect Powder Room
After the kitchen, the next most-visited room at your dinner party is the powder room, or guest half-bath.

  • Enhancing the mood of your soiree with candles – not only do they soften the lighting and add a festive flair; but they also are electricity-free!
  • Incorporating ceramic tile in floors, countertops and walls. Some ceramic tiles are made from recycled products, such as discarded bottle glass.
  • Installing electronic faucets or faucets certified to meet WaterSense® criteria to conserve water. Look for a faucet that's certified so that it reduces water usage — yet looks stylish in your bathroom.

Earth-Friendly Entertaining
Once your decorating is complete, it's time to add a few, final green touches to your event:

  • Invite an acoustic guitarist to play at the party – it not only will give your event a more intimate feel, it will also conserve energy.
  • Buy beverages in aluminum cans and glass bottles that can be recycled; and create a 'festive' reminder for guests to dispose of these items in recycling bins.

Finally, remember that every little bit counts – and by showing your guests a glamorous –and green – experience, you can empower them to follow in your eco-conscious footsteps.

In the kitchen, striking the balance between function and style that serves everyone in the household is immensely important, since this is the room where a lot of family interaction is going to take place. So, here’s Emily, our guest lighting expert, lays it all out for us …

Lighting designers often talk about creating "layers of light" in a room, and the kitchen is no doubt the most important room in the house to implement this. As the kitchen's functionality shifts throughout the day, the level of light needed changes as well.

Think about it: focused bright light is ideal for meal preparation, whether you are reading a recipe or chopping vegetables on the counter. Well-designed ambient light sets the mood for socializing and entertaining friends. A soft glow is helpful for a late-night trip for a glass of water or snack.

In order to design a kitchen that adapts perfectly to any situation, you'll have to establish layers of light. The effect will truly transform your kitchen into a room you want to spend time in.

Level 1: General Lighting

Many people make the mistake of establishing general lighting in the kitchen and stopping there. This is an essential component, but if it stands alone, you will be missing out on high-quality design potential. In addition, your kitchen will be shadowy and unevenly lit. General lighting is still an important component as it is simply the base of the lighting design. Recessed lighting, ceiling lights, and over cabinet lights are all great general lighting options; it just depends on which style you prefer.

Level 2: Task Lighting

Under cabinet lighting is a must in the kitchen for both function and style. The illumination of your backsplash creates a bright surface that enhances your kitchen's appearance, and the focused light will allow you to cook in an environment that's easy on the eyes. Under cabinet lighting can also double as a night light, especially if you have a dimmer installed.

The area over the sink also typically requires additional focused light. For task lighting that is not underneath a cabinet, consider adding a pendant light or two. Their glass shades are extremely unique and can create a stunning effect in the kitchen.

Level 3: Accent Lighting

Accent lighting is for that additional "oomph" – the part that officially completes your kitchen's transformation into a beautiful, expertly-designed room. Accent lighting is a little more fluid, and it depends on your individual space. Do you have an interesting painting you would like to spotlight, or a plant you could silhouette with an uplight? Think about how you can use accent lighting to put your own unique touch on your kitchen.
