Utilitarian Grid-Style Kitchens Can Be Beautiful, Too

Posted: 02 Feb 2010 04:45 PM PST

The Sliding Kitchen by Workstead is a new design scheme to save space in a tight kitchen.

LEED AP Stefanie Brechbuehler and Robert Highsmith of Workstead designed this kitchen transformation from top-to-bottom. The problem: lack of space in a cramped Brooklyn apartment. Their solution: utilize a grid system with the cabinetry and optimize headspace by implementing sliding cabinet doors. Genius.

Because there wasn't much countertop space in this single-wall kitchen, the designers worked to offer creative spaces for displaying pretty objects and keeping useful items within arm's reach. They accomplished this by stacking multiple wall cabinets over the base cabinets and countertops, as well alternating slider doors and open cabinets.

The gray-on-gray color scheme brightens up the space, giving the illusion that it's bigger than it is and accentuating the room's openness.

The cabinet door sliders really do provide quite an advantage. Not only are they easy to operate, but they save more space than traditional forward-swinging cabinet doors. Sure, an open cabinet door doesn't need much space, but in a diminutive kitchen, an open cabinet door slices through the visual breadth of the room and cuts it down a size.

What really helps tie the room scheme together is the mirrored format for the living room's entertainment center. From the living room staring off into the kitchen, it appears as if there's a continuous wall spanning from one room into the next, which also adds to the illusion of grand size and space. Well done.

Who Knew Cardboard Could Look This Good?

Posted: 02 Feb 2010 01:52 PM PST

Cardboard: it's not just for shipping your eBay items anymore! Now people are recycling all sorts of materials, like corrugated cardboard boxes, and finding cool new uses for them. Not only are we saving landfills and our environment, but we're seeing some awesome new inventions – ideas that wouldn't have been conceived otherwise.

Designer/innovator Jason Schneider creates cardboard furniture that, at first glance, appears to be solid wood construction. But look a little closer, and you can see the layers of wavy corrugated cardboard.

Although I've seen cardboard furniture before, never have I seen such functional and attractive pieces before. Schneider uses the contrast between light and dark to make his pieces even more visually intriguing.

What's even more attractive is the way he's shaped the pieces in his collection. Most pieces are rounded, elliptical or oblong – very stylish and free-flowing.

You've probably noticed that parts of the furniture are painted. Schneider uses 100-percent all-natural milk paint to achieve this effect.

Looking back on his earlier work, it's easy to see the transition Schneider made to the cardboard pieces he's making today. Prior to this, his collection consisted mostly of wooden innovations, but they have the same unique hallmarks that are distinct in his more current works.

3 Ideas to Incorporate a Television into Your Bedroom

People usually have a distinct preference concerning televisions in the bedroom; they either must have one or don't want one in the room at all. Some who lean toward not having one at all simply don't like the fact the television normally must sit on top of a piece of bedroom furniture.

3 Ways to Add a TV Stylishly

There are many unique and beautiful television storage options which might make you reconsider the bedroom television set.

  • Custom build a cabinet for the television to make it as unobtrusive as possible. This can be a beautiful appointment in your bedroom and offer storage space above or below the television.
  • Utilize an armoire with a shelf for the television. The cabinet doors will be closed when you aren't watching television and this will also offer additional storage drawers for other items.
  • Hang the television on the wall so it takes up no shelf or furniture top space or purchase a bedroom media center which doubles as a dresser.

There are many options available to you if you want to have a television in the bedroom. You will have the perfect place for the television and additional storage options to boot.

Super Bowl Party Prep

Posted: 02 Feb 2010 10:47 AM PST

Super Bowl 44 is upon us. Whether you're a football fan or not, you can't deny that it's one of the larger events on the American social landscape. What the New Orleans Saints have accomplished this year is unprecedented for that franchise and it's tough to root against Peyton Manning and the Colts.

Regardless of who you're pulling for in the game we've got a guide for you that will guarantee your Super Bowl party is a hit.

Audio and Video - It's all about the game. Maybe the Super Bowl is an excuse to throw a party but the game still needs to be on and the audio in working order. If you're on a 13" tube you should not be throwing a Super Bowl party as your guests will be solely disappointed.

Now's the time to invite friends over to show off your 52" plasma and 7.1 home theater system. Watching football in high-definition changes the game and even casual fans will be entranced by the action on the field.

Keep other audio distractions such as music off during the game.

Seating - Your ratty couch might suit you and your roommate but if you expect people to spend 3+ hours in front of your TV you should make it comfortable for them. You don't have to have a chair for everyone but at least 70% of your attendees should have proper seating. Adjust that percentage up or down based on how the fan fervor of your guests.

If you find yourself low on seating consider borrowing furniture from neighbors or at the least bring in some chairs from other rooms. Don't expect your guests to do this for you.

Food & Drink - Every party is unique but over the course of a game everyone will want food and drink. Plan accordingly. Rest assured your non-frat buddy guests will be nonplussed if you only offer PBR and Doritos.

Ask a friend whose parties you always enjoy to help you out in this area. There is probably a reason why they throw great parties and it's usually the food/drink/atmosphere.

Footloose on Wood Floors!

Posted: 02 Feb 2010 09:00 AM PST

In conjunction with my last post, wood flooring maintenance when it comes to frequent foot traffic doesn’t have to be intrusive to your enjoyment of your wood flooring. This is how it should be, considering that you installed your wood floor to enhance your space, quality of life, and maybe the potential resale value of your property. When it comes to protecting your investment, sometimes it’s just about putting some very simple measures in place, like a good old fashioned welcome mat at your front door.

Another simple measure in everyday wood floor care is your footwear, or the footwear of your guests. By the time you’ve read this post, you’ve probably read several other posts and articles that have told you that wearing high-heels and athletic cleats on your wood floor surface is a bad move. Pressure per square inch on a high-heel alone will absolutely scratch your flooring. So will your golf shoes, friends. But, you knew that too. It’s pretty obvious.

But, remember; a lot of harmful elements coming from the outside on any kind of footwear can also take away from the original lustre of your flooring. The mat you put in place can capture a lot of it. But, how about this? What if everyone took off their shoes, no matter what type?

What if everybody “cut loose, footloose” ?

Does this mean Kevin Bacon-esque dancing across your floor? Well, it could mean that, I guess. But I suppose when I say that, I mean that a no-shoes policy while on wood flooring can add subtle difference in the way that your flooring will wear over time, whether your guests are boogeying across your floor or not. Set your feet free!

Now, another thing should be restated, and that is that quality wood floors, be they solid hardwood, engineered wood, laminate, cork, or bamboo floors are made to last a long time. Some hardwoods and other naturally-derived surfaces like cork flooring have lasted hundreds of years. Laminate floors are given robust warranties that span decades as well. You haven’t invested in a fragile material. But, implementing simple solutions to keep grit and glass fragments common to the bottoms of shoes off your floor means that you’re acting as an ally to the long-term look that attracted you to your choice in wood flooring to begin with.

So, break out the slippers! Or get down in your socks! Your floors will thank you with the lustrous sheen that they rewarded you with you installed them.

For the next and final post in our frequent foot traffic series, we’ll talk a bit about runners and area rugs, and how they can enhance your space while also helping to preserve your wood flooring at the same time.

Cheers,

Rob.

5 Quick Bathroom Furniture Ideas

Posted: 02 Feb 2010 12:00 AM PST

Many people underestimate the humble bathroom, but it is as important as any other room. To make the most out of your bathroom, here are some furniture ideas.

1. While a pedestal sink can look chic, a full vanity gives extra storage space, with room both below the sink as well as counter space. This is especially useful in small bathrooms.

2. Cabinets can also provide additional storage, and one with a mirrored front is even better. Choose one with shelves to make the most out of your space.

3. Finding a shelf designed to fit above the toilet can be a great option for homes that lack a linen closet.
