However, many of these are expensive, complicated, and may not live up to the billing. The best "stuff" is usually comparatively inexpensive and easy to install when your home is being built or renovated. Some of this stuff could also be the thought process that goes into your home’s design and/or selection of materials. It can also be the care taken during the installation. If you install wood exterior trim, it is inexpensive to install and paint, but it can become an annual painting chore. When this maintenance is neglected, then you have to replace it at a cost.
Another example is your roof. If you select a basic 25yr 3 tab asphalt shingle for your home it will work. However metal, stone, or composite roofing will last 2, 3 or more times longer than the asphalt roofing. In addition, these types will resist weather, vegetation, and wildlife damage to a greater degree. The metal and composite roofing will also be recyclable when replaced instead of being buried in a landfill site. The heating and air conditioning equipment installed in your home can also make your life easier and less expensive. Many of the HVAC and HRV installations today are of the least expensive products and materials, and use the easiest installation method or route for the installer. This results in a home that has heat and a/c but is still uncomfortable due to drafts, cold and hot spots, and inaccessible maintenance points. With a little more thought, you can have equipment and an installation that will last longer, run cheaper, and make you more comfortable. Today, many trades rely on caulking to keep your home warm and dry. The problem with caulking is that it will fail — there’s no if. The vast majority of leaks and drafts are a result of failed caulking. These failures are usually the result of an incorrect installation method or the incorrect caulking was used in the location. If the various parts of your home are assembled correctly, caulking isn’t actually necessary in most places that it is still being used in today. Besides, who wants to climb a ladder to caulk a gap at the window and brick joint on the second floor? So where do these problems come from? Some of them come from the desire to keep the construction budget low when building. There are smarter places to save money than others; this should be discussed fully with your contractor. Another one is the designer of the building. Only a couple of examples are discussed here, but most parts of your home will have similar trade offs and choices. You should understand the cause and affects of any decisions you make when building, renovating, or repairing your home. An added benefit of this process is that you are contributing to a greener environment, a greener wallet, and a smaller carbon footprint. | Posted: 16 Feb 2010 09:00 AM PST In this mini-series about travertine, I thought I’d speak in general terms to start off with, and then get to the meat of the subject when it comes to the kinds of products you can buy to bring its look and function into your space. First then, here’s what travertine actually is; how it’s formed, what’s ‘in it’, and what some of its basic characteristics are. So, here we go.
Another thing that happens as travertine is forming is that, in addition to river systems and springs, escaping gasses also play a big part of the way that travertine looks when it’s quarried. Just before the stone solidifies, the gasses creates miniscule holes in its surface. And once again, it’s this mark of origin that lends travertine its unique look - that randomly patterned, porous surface that a lot of designers find irresistible in a natural stone surface. Waiting in the ground in places like Turkey where travertine is particularly plentiful, and where some of the most skilled quarries in the industry are also located, travertine is a unique surface for floors, walls, accessories, pavers, and more. When water damage occurs, the first step is assessing the source of the water and thus its category. This is important because the category determines what can be saved and what can't be saved.
Remember, category III water has either sewage or toxic chemical potential. This includes not just raw sewage, but water from a source of raw sewage. For example, a toilet overflow from the bowl, even if the water in the bowl was "clean" just prior to the overflow, should be treated as category III because the source of the contamination. Think about it this way: no matter how clean water sitting in a toilet might be, you likely would not add Kool Aid to it and mix it up for a nice summer drink, right?
When category III water damage occurs, all porous surfaces should be removed with full personal protective equipment on (we'll look at this equipment in a subsequent post). Drywall, carpet, carpet pad, insulation, baseboard, wood flooring, rugs, furnishings, etc. You name it. It should be discarded. Now, if you have an antique rug from the 1650's worth more than our national debt, you of course would try to save it by hiring a restoration company specializing in textiles. But if the products are not unique, they should be tossed. It's for the safety of your family. Non-porous materials, like tile, concrete, plumbing fixtures, etc. can be cleaned with a standard biocide cleaner and left in the home. You may want to get a a relatively strong biocide from a janitorial supply company. When using such products, be sure to follow the use label on the product explicitly. Not doing so can harm the occupants of the home and is also illegal.
In contrast to category III water damage, salvaging materials after category I or II water damage depends on the actual damage to the material, not necessarily the contamination to the material. In essence, you are concerned more about the finished product rather than endangering the occupants.

Welcome to vintage everything! With no particular decorating style in mind, Stacie McCormick, the former photo director for Domino magazine, travels abroad and brings back treasures for her two-bedroom Brooklyn duplex. She and her boyfriend, film location manager Collin Smith, have shopped in Buenos Aires, Warsaw and Paris, to name a few. And their buying power broadened when their daughter, Tessa, came along. Now, it's not just classic furnishings and flea market art – it's children's books and toys from days gone by as well.
Tessa's high chair matches the 1950s Danish dinette set. Abodeon of Boston and eBay get credit for the genie-style lamp and painting.
The kitchen is the catchall for many of the couple's finds, like their Danish Copenhagen glasses, European linens, old bowls and ceramic plates. The lamps above made the trip back from Poland a bit more strenuous than usual, but all in all, totally worth it. And the inspiration for the glass jars that line the counters? A mouse in the house.
The selling point for the house turned out also to be the money pit. The massive skylight above this staircase sprung a leak and had to be completely replaced. But as Stacie said, again, "Worth it!"
The couple's monochromatic bedroom is accented only by artwork. The one above the bed is by Robert De Niro's father. Who knew he painted?
Tessa's bedroom door was picked up from a neighborhood trash pile. The material for that great fabric curtain, however, originated a bit farther away. Stacie and her mom happened upon it during a shopping spree in Belize.
Tessa's room is uncharacteristic of a child's space, although Stacie is confident that the traditional and whimsical mishmash is enough to stimulate her imagination. Sentimental, fun groupings, like the painting from Stacie's grandmother surrounded by butterflies and a purple feather boa vitalize the walls and corners. The ink drawings from Poland are brightened up by a red paper flower.
Once the couple's bedroom, the ornate wallpaper remains as decoration in Tessa's room. Stacie ordered the paper from Sweden and liked it so much, she bought 10 extra rolls.
National Geographic magazines point the way to more travel for the family. We hope they continue to find great buys, like the cute hat from Peru and painting of the Mexican woman from Chapel Hill.
Stacie said she buys what she loves without much thought as to where it may fit. But it always does, even if it's a tablecloth-turned-shower curtain or a painting over the commode. Every room needs inspiration. |

If a pre-painted metal and/or a "plastic" material is selected, it may be more expensive to supply and install, but you no longer have to paint it on a regular basis. In addition, it will outlast the wood. This is why most homes today have metal soffits and fascia, PVC windows and door brick moulds.
Many, but not all designers are more concerned with the "look" of the project instead of what would perform better and suit the owner. The designer may also be unaware of some of the potential maintenance problems some selections can create. The contractor would know these issues, as he has had to deal with the warranty or repair issue in the past.
First of all, you might notice when you take a look at your sample, or when you visit a retail location, that travertine resembles both limestone, and marble. This is because these types of natural stone develop in the same way, and are at different stages of development. That is, these varieties of stone build up due to underground water movement that collects minerals like calcium carbonate, and other sundry materials. These elements mingle and solify over millions of years. Because the mixture of elements is random, the patterns and color variations you’ll see in the finished product are also random. And that’s a big part of the beauty you’ll find in it. Depending on mineral content, travertine can appear to be gray with violet highlights, or golden brown, or even chocolaty brown.
