First off, it’s not often you encounter someone with an umlaut in their name. Second, it’s not often you find a design firm with this much coolness in one blog. We’ve found it. It’s called Von Löwen Designs.

Von Löwen Designs is the namesake and brainchild of the blazing talent of one Lars Von Löwen. Von Löwen is a designer extraordinaire, and his blog is brimming with pictures of his creative works of art. Peek into the high-end residential abodes of Soho, Tahoe, or L.A., and you may just glimpse his handiwork. Although Von Löwen is based in the S.F. Bay Area, his fame is a lot bigger than just the Bay. His specialty is kitchens and baths. A brief poke around the blog will tell you that much.

Uber-Useful Resource Center

Lars has a colloquial writing style that is eminently helpful, altogether practical, and always focused on guiding the average home remodeler. He covers the topics that are most important in home repair. The blog has blossomed into a resource center that trumps any Home Depot fix-it guide.

Von Löwen's passion for green designs is one of the reasons that he ofers a level of excellence that goes beyond just stunning design. It seems like every few weeks, Lars is blogging about some fresh information in green design that gets his readers excited, motivated, and inspired to get a bit greener themselves.

Upcoming Events

Speaking of Bay events, Von Löwen Designs just claimed the Best of the Bay Award for Kitchen and Bath design. That's no small token of respect. The Best of the Bay awards are highly sought-after prizes that give a company the imprimatur of true excellence. Von Löwen received the award based on the votes between twenty-eight contestants. Not bad.

Von Löwen is taking it to the next level with a brand-new partnership they formed with HDR remodeling. HDR, for your information, stands for Honey Do Repair. Make no mistakes, however; Von Löwen plus HDR produces a product that honey could never do. Since HDR specializes in bathroom and kitchen remodels, and Von Löwen happens to specialize in the design of the same, the combination is win, win, win. The new partnership is creating beautiful green creations everywhere with their In-House Design Services, Construction Services, and Maintenance & Repair services.

Wanna see a very cool home repair blog…maybe one of the best in the business? Check it out: Von Löwen Designs.

If you’re looking to merge a bit of the outdoors with comfort, freedom and imagination, think tree houses. Yes, perhaps gone are the days of scampering up a tree trunk or sling-shotting rocks at neighbors’ cats. But a tree house is nothing more than a shelter embedded into nature. Whether you want a hideout to enjoy your evening coffee and literature, a writer's retreat, or a place to actually inhabit, here are some tree houses to inspire you.

This 1,000-square-foot house in the trees of San Francisco was originally designed in 1960 by Frank Lloyd Wright's apprentice, Daniel Liebermann. The owners, architect and interior designer all agreed that the renovation should focus on incorporating modern elements into this nature structure. The master bedroom in the rear features an open washing area, and every space opens up to panoramas of the redwoods. Light passes through the house as the day progresses to illuminate various parts and show the space in its true glory.

Now this is a tree house for grown-ups. With solar design and climate control, the partially exposed post-and-beam structure allows for floor-to-ceiling openings, and a spanning view of the Los Angeles basin below. See the view from the office above.

Bosworth Hoedemaker, LLC specializes in homes along the West Coast, from Mexico up to the Northwest. Placing value in the building's relationship to landscape, this firm has designed some amazing spaces. The architect says that this writer's hut is "part of a larger compound created for a family’s private retreat in the San Juan’s. This client wanted her own private space where she could spend rainy afternoons surrounded by nature to work on her writing."

Арсенал супергероя настила: Выстукивая блоки и прокладки

Posted: 12 Jul 2010 09:00 AM PDT

In part three in our mini-series about some of the things you’ll need to succeed in installing and caring for wood flooring, here’s a few words about some simple, yet vital, tools necessary to a flooring installation.

There are a couple things to keep in mind when installing floors when it comes to individual boards, and for the floor as a whole. First, the floor boards are not indestructible, as durable as they are. And second, they will do what comes naturally after they’ve been installed, which means that they will move. This means that the expansion gap you leave should be even.

To cover both of these aspects of wood flooring installation, there are two items to consider to see to both of these aspects. The first is the tapping block, and the second are spacers. Both are vital to your success. But, “how?” you ask.

How, indeed.Let’s look at the tapping block, or “knock block”, first. Here’s our Matt demonstrating the use of the tapping block to accomplish two goals. The first is protecting the tongue of the board from being damaged by the mallet, and second to even out the force along the board, so that it slides into the groove more easily. Take a look.

By the way, this installation depicted in this video is very out of the ordinary, since it’s being done outside (a bad idea for any wood floor). The video was a part of our ‘Watch Us Wreck A Floor‘ series. That’s why you hear my voice droning on about the weather! Some of you may have seen it already, and to those who haven’t, the link above will explain just what we were thinking with such a crazy, and in every practical sense ill-advised decision to install a wood floor outside.

Anyway, getting back to being a flooring superhero, using the tapping block is only a part of the installation.

When you’re establishing an expansion gap, you’ll need spacers to help you do it properly. Spacers are wedges of wood or plastic which slide in between your floor board and the wall. This creates an even gap of about an inch around the perimeter of your room, and around stationary objects like pillars, too. When you’re floor expands and contracts – note, not if but when – the gap that you’ve created using spacers will allow that movement without causing crowning and cupping.

Cheers!

Rob.
