Идти для Голливуд Glam Remodel? 10 путей тряхнуть дом

Posted: 23 Jul 2010 02:08 PM PDT

Just received your third Oscar? Own a multi-gazillion-dollar house in L.A. thanks to your dozen blockbusters? Remodeling and simply want to feel like a star? Here are 10 elements of the fabulously glamorous Hollywood style to incorporate into your home renovation.

#1- Sexy Game Room

For the undoubted hours of leisure you're looking to fill, create a sexy game room complete with a pool table, sound system for great mood music, and lighting that can create an evening glow. Fabulous view like this one from Jennifer Aniston's new home featured in Architectural Digest not included, though highly recommended.

#2 – Full-Service Bar

No, you may not juggle glasses like Tom Cruise in Cocktail, but you can entertain with panache when you create a full-service bar. A simple renovation and quick way to revolutionize a room and add instant cool factor to your pad, a full bar lets you take the party home.

#3 – Fireside Lounge

Whether it's an indoor-meets-outdoor suspended fireplace like this one, or your traditional mantle, modernize your fireplace and design a fabulous lounge area around it. You'll tempt houseguests to loosen up à la California style and lounge for hours of visiting, or simply encourage yourself to take your from-home work or that morning latte to a more relaxing setting.

#4 – In-House Movie Theater

True to the Hollywood scene, you can't (and don't want to) escape movies. In fact, you can take your appreciation for film up to aficionado status when you create an in-house movie theater. This can be a relatively non-intrusive change to your home, setting off a room specifically and adding a screen, good lighting, and comfortable seating. Consider a popcorn maker and vending machine for that dark corner and your theater cravings.

#5 – Formal Dining Room

Wheeling and dealing your next film idea requires that you entertain in a formal dining setting. This room, belonging to the French underground restaurant called the Hidden Kitchen, transforms an elegant living room by day to a full-scale regal dining room by night.

#6 – Bold Opulence

Of course, Hollywood wouldn't be what it is without the glam. Boldly incorporate opulence in your style. This doesn't have to mean going over the top with every detail, but being willing to incorporate grand color, texture, or some fantastical piece of unexpected furniture. Or all of the above.

#7 – Personal Day Spa Bathroom

For the times when you want to feel Zen in the privacy of your own home, turn your bathroom into a personal day spa. Change the flooring and tiling. Replace your tub. Install lighting that can go from a functional bright to a relaxing dim. Think sleek, think subtle, think spa.

#8 – Car Lover's Garage

Protect that flashy ride. Refurbish and organize your garage into a real car-lover's space. Or build a new garage, like this one that comes out of the ground.

#9 – Pool Party Patio

Build a pool house or similarly open room attached to your home to merge the outdoors with the indoors when entertaining. Creating a lounge area around a fireplace (even a free-standing one) and dining capacity for open, breezy fun.

#10 – Lush Boudoir

You need your beauty rest. No matter how private or public your bedroom, make a lush boudoir that leaves you refreshed and indulged. This could take a major renovation, or it could be achieved through the smaller details, such as how you position your bed, how the light comes in, and how you stack your linens. Create another lounge space within the room so you can find privacy and respite with style.

4 холодных проекта дома для всей шатии

Posted: 23 Jul 2010 11:02 AM PDT

If you prefer a root canal over tackling home improvement projects, then it may be time you take a less conventional approach. How about getting your family or group of best beds to keep you company while lightening your load? Here are some home improvement projects perfect for the whole gang.

#1 – Fresh Coat o' Paint for the Summertime

If you've ever tried to paint an entire room solo, then you know what a big task it can be. So why not throw a good ole' fashioned painting party? Tell your participants of choice to wear the best of their raggedy clothes, and you provide the food. What was once a 5-hour job could be cut in half, or less, depending on the amount of people you invite.

#2 – Start an Herb Garden

Wilted backyard got you down? Your kids might just be the perfect group to help. Instead of sticking to flowers, you can get your little ones to lend a hand in planting a vegetable garden. Not only will they love playing in the dirt, but it will give them a reason to become active participants when it comes to meal time as well.

#3 – Organize the Fun Way

Organization is a big part of how your home looks, but it takes time to get it right. If you want to get your kids excited about helping, turn it into an art project. Buy plastic containers, and paint one side of the container with chalkboard paint. Put your kids in charge of labeling each box and adding a bit of decoration.

#4 – Group Garage Sale

Or if your friends are also late on the spring cleaning, hold one gigantic garage sale. You'll put your unused items in the hands of people that want them, and free up your home space at the same time.

Home improvement doesn't have to be a terrible thing. Make as many projects as possible into group-friendly events, and you might start to enjoy the tasks on that to-do list.

Рационализаторство, красотка и пер павлина: Неимоверная кухня Remodel Кен Келли

Posted: 23 Jul 2010 08:53 AM PDT

Designed for an artsy family of six in Dix Hills, New York, this kitchen remodel is perhaps one of the most beautiful we’ve seen. It captures the family’s personality so well—their creative, playful spirit, colorful design taste…even their love of peacock feathers! We sat down with Ken Kelly of Kitchen Designs, the mastermind behind it all, to get the story on this amazing makeover. Ken shared his secrets to a fun yet functional kitchen remodel.

#1 – First of all, where did you come up with these beautiful color combinations?

While speaking with the clients and walking through their home, I noticed they loved color, and the home had a very artsy personality and was quite expressive. It reminded me immediately of a quilt. There were colorful teapots in the original kitchen and several peacocks in various sizes, colors, and shapes in the room.

There was also a single peacock feather tucked into the bulletin board. When I asked the clients about their "thing for peacocks," they said part of what they loved about peacocks were all the colors. I immediately thought of an interior decorator I know who is a fabulous quilter. I asked the clients if they were open to bringing in this designer because I knew she would create the exact eccentric element to the design I had in my mind for this kitchen. They agreed, and we came up with this fabulous mosaic tile floor consisting of 22 different colors. We then patterned them to create the "quilted" rug effect on the floor—all in glass tile.

#2 – That peacock feather ceiling mural is so fun! What's the story there?

The mural is hand-painted and gives the client a little something more than a feather pinned to her bulletin board. I designed that ceiling because the previous ceiling was cathedral vaulted –very blah and unexciting. It had an almost industrial-looking track light system hanging down off the vaulted ceiling.

Part of what I did to make it cozier was to redesign the vaulted ceiling to a flat ceiling of 9 feet. Then, I made a tray ceiling just over the island to raise the height farther and add volume to the room. With the extra volume, the light fixture could be raised—that way, it doesn't hang down so low over your head. The result is a nice, open space feeling.

#3 – What about that mosaic-style backsplash?

After honing in on cabinet details and counter selection, we customized the backsplash with a mixing and matching of raised textures and patterns. This gives the kitchen the same artistic feel as the rest of the home.

The collage you see over the stove is actually custom ceramic tile with recycled bottle caps, buttons, beads and broken pieces of china. How cool is that! Also, the light blue glass tile backsplash is made of bubble glass. It was custom-designed by Wohlberg/Levy Designs on Long Island—beautiful work.

#4 – Who designed the cabinetry?

Ken Kelly designed the kitchen cabinetry and banquet cabinetry in Wood Mode – Sierra on Cherry finish, with Sonoma Square Recessed Panel Doors. I thought the cabinetry had to be clean-lined and sleek, and I love the hardware on this job. The turquoise jewels in the handles pick up colors used in the stools and banquet fabric, as well as one of 22 colors from the floor.

#5 – How did you incorporate a laundry center into the remodel?

The clients were willing to give up a bay of their garage to create this laundry room. The old laundry space used to be a hallway that transitioned from the back of the kitchen to garage. During my first visit to the client's home, the laundry was falling out onto the kitchen floor, and the clients were tripping over it all the time.

To fix this problem, I eliminated the laundry space and instead created a wall of new kitchen pantries for additional storage, where the old machines were. I then relocated the laundry room by building an adjacent room off the kitchen—and did this by carving it out of the existing garage, matching the cabinetry to the kitchen. We reorganized the layout of the garage so that there was still room for a car and a row of bikes. With the extra space, we were able to design a beautiful new laundry room.

Kitchen Designs by Ken Kelly is also behind the award-winning Phenomenal Blue Bathroom Remodel we covered a few weeks ago. Based in New York, they come highly recommended by clients and industry professionals alike.

Интервью с создателем зеленого цвета Jetson

Posted: 22 Jul 2010 02:20 PM PDT

CalFinder goes behind the scenes with Preston Koerner, founder of Jetson Green

Jetson Green is a daily site devoted to innovation in residential green design. The site features about 10 articles weekly on cool projects, products and other news. Featured in publications like The Wall Street Journal, Dwell, and Apartment Therapy, and visited by 3 million readers—you don't want to miss it. Check it out on Facebook, Twitter, and JetsonGreen.com.

Margaret: Preston, as a practicing attorney and LEED AP, you write articles on building green, which all seems to be a crescendo from your creating Jetson Green as an MBA student. What prompted your focus on green building trends and the ultimate inception of Jetson Green?

Preston: I started the site really to figure out what blogging was all about. Green building was a topic that I was (and still am) passionate about, so my research in this area became material for discovering a new medium. After blogging for a short period of time, I ended up finishing law and business school but the site kept expanding and growing, so I kept it going.

Preston's Favorite Green Homes

Rob Pyatt's Boxhouse

Margaret: Which home featured on Jetson Green ranks as a favorite, and why?

Preston: I'm really into tiny houses right now. I'd like to build a tiny, contemporary green home and show readers the entire process from start to finish. Companies have shown an interest in supporting a project like this, but I'm still brainstorming options and, as a new dad, time is certainly an issue. In the meantime, my favorite house is probably the Boxhouse, a modern home in Boulder by Rob Pyatt. I'm also partial to weeHouses and would love to place one in Park City as a vacation rental.

Eco Epiphany?

Margaret: You and I both grew up around Dallas, Texas, which has certainly taken socially responsible steps. Yet it wasn't the greenest city in the '80s and '90s—shared and public transportation just wasn't done, and in a state where "bigger is better," the city was not an example of concise sustainable living. What sparked your awareness of green living? Was your family green-minded? Did you have some epiphanic moment?

Preston: I've always felt the importance of sustainability, though, growing up in the suburbs, I can't say I grew up an environmentalist or even knew what one was. As an Eagle Scout, I gained an appreciation for nature and learned the value of leaving no trace. Later, while living in Japan, I figured out how to make ends meet by saving water and energy. At some point, when working in real estate and studying at graduate school, I took an interest in green building innovation and things kind of took off from there.

A Greener Mindset

Fontenay reclaimed wood flooring from old wine barrels

Margaret: Jetson Green seems to focus on features and news about great sustainable homes, rather than DIY hints and tips, in an effort to expose residential consumers to a greener mindset overall. In this light, what would you say about the correlation between consumerism and environmentalism, and why that should matter to the everyday resident?

Preston: Specifically, our focus is projects, products, and news primarily in the residential context; however, each article must have some thread of beauty, design, affordability or innovation. I'm working on plans to revamp the entire site and, after doing that, plan to provide more DIY and resource coverage. I also plan to find a way to add new perspectives from experts who can sound off on critical green building issues.

But these topics, "consumerism" and "environmentalism," are complicated and usually cannot be simplified to a five-step list. The reality is, there is an environmental impact associated with all activity – renovation or new construction – and what I'm trying to do is to give people viable options to show them what others are doing and how they're finding success. I hope the everyday resident will visit and think, I should do something like that for my next project.

How You Can Do the Same

Marmol Radziner’s LOwer COst MOdular aka Locomo

Margaret: As far as hints and tips goes: What would you say, from all of your exposure to great green living examples, is the first thing a resident should do when considering going green in their home?

Preston: First thing I did was read The Ecology of Commerce by Paul Hawken. Although it's kind of a business read, the book helped me understand the ecological aspects of my desire to live cleaner, simpler, and with a lighter impact. After that, I suggest that residents understand their situation with an energy or environmental audit. The right auditor will provide a list of personalized items to work with. Things should domino from there.

Margaret: Thank you for taking time to answer a few questions, and for helping to bring beautiful green design to the masses. Good luck with everything.
