Декор дома благодарения Erin Loechner

Today, one of our friends and respected interior design writer Erin Loechner makes a glorious return here on this humble blog of ours. She talks about one of her favorite times of the year – Thanksgiving – which is more than just a date on a calendar. It’s a part of a cultural ritual which we share with loved ones.

And with every good ritual, you need the right accouterments, props, stuff, to help you get a stylish edge to the proceedings, especially when you’ve been working hard on transformative home renovations the year before. Who better to talk about showing off a transformed home than Erin?

***

Hands down, the best part about living through a grueling renovation is the satisfaction you get from hosting a dinner party, family function or holiday festivity. For me, Thanksgiving has always been my favorite time of year and although I won’t yet be finished with my home, I’ll definitely be dreaming of next year’s celebration.

Care to see how I’ll be entertaining my family and friends next year?

With simple ingredients and a sweet, rustic apron, I’ll be head of the kitchen! Clearly, this is my dream world:

I’ll display a quirky gourd garland around my front door, decorate with plenty of wooden accents and keep chunky, warm throw blankets on hand for when the sun goes down!

I’ll set my table with festive dinnerware, linen napkins and plenty of homemade jam!

And, of course, rustic touches will be scattered throughout the rest of my home for the ultimate Thanksgiving experience.

Can you smell the cornbread already? Ahhhh, autumn has arrived!

How will you be decorating, friends?

Thanks Erin!

Back in the day, kids rooms were very simple…blue, sports themed decor for boys and pink flowers, lace and frills for girls. Well, welcome to the 21st century, moms and dads! Decor for kids’ rooms are now as sleek and high tech as their gadgets. Gone are the stuffed animals, fire engines and Fisher Price toys. Now the look is “less is more”, trendy and minimalist with the emphasis on space and light. Here’s some ideas on how to create this look for your child’s bedroom:

  • In terms of bedroom furniture, you’ll simply want the basics: a bed, nightstands, some simple shelving for knick-knacks, and a dresser.
  • The bed is always the focal point of the bedroom. The platform bed exemplifies this with its minimal components. It simply is that: platform and mattress.
  • Matching this minimal look are the other pieces of bedroom furniture. Find pieces that feature clean, geometric lines and are low to the ground.
  • In terms of lighting, minimalist home decorating generally prefers light colors to dark.
  • The same white walls that sometimes give a sterile, almost empty feel to a room work well in minimalist rooms because they open space.
  • In order to counterbalance this sense of sterility, find bedroom furniture and bedroom accessories that are darkly finished (or at least, darkly framed) that will contrast the white. These pieces will also hide the wear and tear your kids may put them through.

Now that you have an idea on how to get the look, here’s some minimalist yet stylish kid bedrooms to help inspire you:

Г-н Rooter, 3M Очищение Inc. уполномочивает гаитянских женщин для того чтобы продать очищенную воду

Imagine unsafe water, no plumbing and barely any jobs. While this is earthquake-stricken Haiti, Mr. Rooter Plumbing and 3M Purification Inc. spent May 23-29 in Ferrier, making clean water and the ability for Haitian women to sell it a reality.

"I've seen devastation before having served eight years in the Marine Corps, but nothing like this," said Mary Kennedy Thompson, president of Mr. Rooter Corporation. "Bringing clean water to the Haitian people has to be one of the top goals right now."

These companies are doing more than just 'talk the talk' - they created a micro-fund to help the Haitian women sell purified water to families in their village. To sell the water, though, the women needed to know where to find clean water and how to bag it.

Along with 3M Purification Inc. engineer Satish Chamyvelumani, Thompson tested 10 wells finding 45 percent of the water unsafe. The river water also tested high for bacteria.

"The water was sickening," Thompson said. "You don't want to put your hand in it, let alone drink it or use the water for cooking and taking baths, and the Haitians didn't even know if was unsafe."

After interviewing more than 100 Haitian women, Thompson found most of them had either headaches or stomachaches, and their children also had whelps on their bodies. She described her findings as a 'Catch 22' for the Haitian people: staying hydrated was essential, but obtaining safe drinking water was very difficult.

Using a chlorinator, Thompson and Chamyvelumani treated the unsafe water while Toronto-based Mr. Rooter franchisee Derek Moreland taught the Haitians how to make water filtration devices that cost less than $35 per family. Chamyvelumani left behind capsules and bags 3M Purification Inc. donated, so they can continue to treat and bag water.

"The Haitian people were eager to learn about their water," Thompson said. "Despite everything they've gone through, they were joyful and gracious."

Mr. Rooter Plumbing and 3M Purification Inc. hope selling the clean water can become a trade for Haitian women. To help enable some of the 87 percent of jobless Haitians, Mr. Rooter Plumbing will return to Haiti later in the year.

On the next trip, they will work more on the micro-funding while several Mr. Rooter plumbers build a water tower for 10 recently built homes in Leogane, Haiti - the epicenter of the earthquake. They will then lay a piping system with multiple spigots throughout the village.

"We want to make their lives easier," said Moreland, who made the pledge to help Haitians during a leadership meeting with fellow franchisees in January. "Instead of the Haitian people having to fill up buckets and walk back and forth to get clean water, we want to provide a piping system for them."

Another major item on the plumbing company's to-do list: collect money for another drill. Despite the team's 12-hour ride in the back of a pickup, two flat tires and sleeping on metal poles in a mattress-free bunk bed, Thompson says they want to do more.

"It was extreme and harsh for us, but it was luxurious conditions compared to the Haitians," Thompson said. "I am filled with admiration for the people in Haiti. They showed me no matter what happens we can choose how we respond to bad circumstances with a positive attitude."

Chamyvelumani agrees. While he was giving back, he got something in return.

“The trip to Haiti provided many lessons that will enable 3M Purification Inc. to develop sustainable solutions to water quality issues faced daily by people in areas such as Haiti in an effort to bring those less fortunate clean water," Chamyvelumani said.

Пробочка, бамбук, резина и бетон: Eco-Настил который справится вы

We’ve gotten a lot of mail from folks interested in cork, rubber and eco-friendly flooring ideas. It’s hardly a secret anymore that these innovative materials are not only energy-smart choices for your home, but often look aesthetically better than traditional vinyl or forest-depleting hardwood.

Check out these materials that are good for both the earth and your family. And for a quick price check on what it would cost to install flooring in your own home, click over here.

Soft & Stunning Cork

Cork could be considered comparable to parquet, without the noise. Insulating against extreme temperatures and softening the decibel level in your household, cork is soft to the touch while remaining durable in daily traffic and usage.

In fact, the material is so abrasion-resistant, cork is often used in public buildings like schools and hotels. Aesthetically, cork provides a warming color while not standing out too starkly in the space.

Recycled Rubber

Also featured in this kitchen: Paperstone Countertops, non-VOC paints and green-certified Crystal Cabinets

Notoriously durable for demanding environments like commercial gyms, rubber comes in a wide range of colors and thicknesses. Many rubber flooring companies use 100% post-consumer material from recycled tires. Without the scent.

This Eco Surfaces case study shows how durable the surface remained after 2.3 million visitors to the Long Island Children's Museum. This material sustains.

Beautiful Bamboo

An equally eco and chic choice for home flooring, bamboo looks incredible without taking from the environment. Because the process is so similar to regular hardwood, contractors can install bamboo with little difficulty. Get in touch with one to learn more.

Why do we love bamboo so much? For starters, it's grown from sustainable forests that replenish their losses faster than they cut them down, and is manufactured into smooth planks or tiles ready for traditional installation. While engineered bamboo can look as sleek as laminate or hardwood, consider solid unfinished bamboo, a cost-effective way to achieve an immaculate and seamless look in a finish of your choice.

Surprisingly Warm Concrete

Great for nearly any room in the house, concrete flooring looks sleek and smooth—and not cold like you might expect. Using less energy in production than most flooring types, concrete also sustains for years with minimal upkeep, and lowers your energy consumption in the process.

A concrete floor with radiant heat can more efficiently heat a home in the winter than traditional systems. Although you'll need to reseal the floor a couple of times a year to keep it up (which compares with the effort of a semi-annual carpet clean), concrete is a great industrial-chic alternative.

To continue our series on hazardous household materials, this time around guest poster Jessica Ackerman, a home decor specialist and expert on all things related to homeowning too, weighs in. Today, Jessica talks about a possibly lesser known, but important, safety consideration in the home; the awareness and prevention of carbon monoxide poisoning …

***

With the changing of the seasons (and with Daylight Savings Time close at hand), I always like to take an opportunity to change the batteries in my smoke detector and also in my carbon dioxide detector. Carbon monoxide poisoning can be lethal, and it seems that a winter does not pass without hearing of a family that was killed by this deadly gas.

I know that many folks are fortuitous enough to have monitoring for carbon monoxide included with their home security systems, and that's an optimal way to make sure that your family is protected. For those of us without this service, the carbon monoxide detector is a must-have. This article will look at what you must do to safeguard your family from the possibility of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Deadly Carbon Monoxide
One of the most horrible things about carbon monoxide is that it is odorless and invisible. You cannot see it or smell it. Yet at high levels, carbon monoxide can kill a person within a matter of minutes. Carbon monoxide is released when fuels do not have the oxygen that they need to burn efficiently – including gas, wood, oil, kerosene, and charcoal. When using a properly maintained appliance or stove, carbon monoxide is typically not problematic. Nonetheless, when an appliance is not working like it should or being used in a manner that is inappropriate, the levels of carbon monoxide within a home can become dangerously high.

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
Hundreds of people die each year from carbon monoxide poisoning, usually caused by a malfunctioning fuel-burning appliance or from improperly using fuel-burning appliances. The elderly, infants, and people who have a history of respiratory or heart problems are particularly susceptible to carbon monoxide poisoning. It is important for all families to be aware of the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning. When carbon monoxide levels within the home are becoming unsafe, the following symptoms usually occur:

  • Severe headaches
  • Mental confusion
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Fainting
  • Shortness of breath

If you or someone in the home experiences these symptoms, it is important to get fresh air right away. Open the windows and doors, turn off all fuel-burning appliances and get out of the house. Seek help in the emergency room of your local hospital and let them know that you suspect carbon monoxide poisoning.

Carbon Monoxide Prevention
Although a carbon monoxide detector is your first line of defense against deadly carbon monoxide poisoning, it should never be considered as a replacement for using good sense when it comes to this deadly gas. The following tips will help you to keep your family safe:

  • Have all fuel-burning appliances inspected each fall before the heating season begins. In my home, we always have the HVAC man come out well before the rush so that we know everything is in proper working order. This inspection includes all gas, oil, and kerosene appliances, including furnaces, water heaters, ranges, ovens, dryers, and space heaters, wood stoves, and fireplaces. The chimney and flue should also be inspected, and should be in good condition and not obstructed in any way.
  • Only purchase appliances that can be vented so that their fumes are directed to the outdoors. Have all appliances installed properly by a professional and then maintain your appliances according to the instructions provided by the appliance manufacturer.
  • Read and follow all of the instructions that are shipped with your fuel-burning appliance. For those who use an unvented kerosene or gas space heater, follow all of the precautions that are listed in the manufacturer's instructions. Never burn a fuel-burning space heater in a room without adequate ventilation; always crack a window in the room where the heater is located. Never sleep in a room with an unvented fuel-burning space heater.
  • Never allow your car to idle in your garage, even with the garage door open. These fumes can build up rapidly and penetrate the home's living area.
  • Never try to heat the kitchen using an open gas oven door.
  • This may sound like a given (and I can't even begin to imagine the smoke damage involved), but don't use your charcoal grill indoors, or even in your fireplace.
  • Don't operate any appliance or device with a gas-powered engine in an enclosed space, such as a generator. If you must use a gas-powered generated, such as during a power outage, always make sure that it is outside and that it is the recommended number of feet away from your home. You will find this information in the manufacturer's instructions that accompany the appliance. Forty percent of deaths from carbon monoxide poisoning are related to improper generator usage.
  • Never avoid symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning. You might lose consciousness and die if you fail to take action.
  • Never allow a carbon monoxide detector to give you a false sense of security. Don't rely on the detector to be functional; prevention is your best bet, even if you subscribe to carbon monoxide monitoring alongside your home security service.

A good carbon monoxide detector costs less than $30; I can't think of a better investment in your family's safety and your peace of mind.

It’s no surprise that New York, New York is the United States’ most populated city. With over 8 million residents, it truly is the Big Apple. Though it is geographically much more compact, New York’s population is more than double the second most populated city, Los Angeles. However, compared to the world’s largest cities, New York seems like a small town. It is way down at number 14 on the list, and clocks in at only half the size of the world’s largest city, which is Shanghai.

Approximately 80% of the United States’ population lives in urban areas. ‘Urban’ certainly doesn’t mean a large city, because over one third of those that made the list of 100 largest cities have less than 300,000 residents. Though living in a city is becoming more in vogue these days, the trend was the opposite for many years. Following the advent and mass production of the car, the need for housing following World War II and the Baby Boom, coupled with “white flight” from the city centers, suburban life became the norm for Americans. Unfortunately, this lifestyle leads to feelings of isolation and is damaging to the environment.

Urban life offers many benefits. You can walk to reach many amenities, such as schools, restaurants, stores, banks and possibly even your workplace. If you have to travel farther, public transportation relieves you of the stress of driving, saves money and cuts back on carbon emissions. Cities offer rich cultural opportunities including museums, theaters and other opportunities to view live performances and exhibitions. Contrary to popular beliefs, cities are often safer than less populated areas due to increased police presence as well as sheer safety in numbers: you rarely find yourself in a dark alley alone.

Какой контрактор делает

Posted: 03 Nov 2010 12:42 PM PDT

by Robert Wright

You may have wondered what your contractor actually does. How do things seem to happen with little effort? Why are they always asking what do you want and when would you like done? Why does he have to explain how things are done?

Its all behind the scene.

You have probably wondered what your renovator actually does. All you see is that you have a few conversations, they put a proposal and budget together, you review and sign the contract, give up your Visa number, and then it just happens.

It's what you don't see, that makes this process look easy – and the good contractors all make it look easy. You don't see the many details that have to be looked after, before during and at the end of your project. All projects have some or all of the following issues, on some projects they can be dealt with on an ongoing basis. On others they have to be dealt with before the project even starts in your home:

  • The multiple phone calls, emails, and faxes to obtain the correct information for you, along with the costs, deliveries and other special notes, when the proposal and budget are being created – for the prototype and finished project – yours!
  • Understanding how the different materials and systems work and don't work in your home; so you don't have issues down the road in your home….like mould, draughts, cold and hot spots, leaks, and multi legged pests in your home.
  • Getting your final selections quickly so that they can be ordered and arrive in a timely fashion. We don't want them arrive out of sequence and affect there prompt installation.
  • The tracking of material deliveries and subcontractors arrival on site – your home!
  • Being able to coordinate the various subcontractors, engineers, inspections, and inspectors your project requires. Then being able come up with a solution to an issue one inspector and/or subcontractor may have, that creates another issue for another inspector and/or engineer and/or home owner. Then making sure it actually happens!
  • The additional unplanned work, because you decided to do more work or hidden damage was found – now this mini project has to be seamlessly integrated with the original project and schedule.
Ensuring your project is being completed in a safe and professional manner for both the workmen and for your family.
  • The latest update of various government regulations that adds to the renovator's burden of legal requirements. These items can include; health and safety regulations, building codes, and environmental issues.
  • Making sure the various suppliers on your project get paid.
Answering any questions you may have as the work is being completed

Most contractors do not have a set way to track and control these and the many other details involved in ensuring your project's completion. The good ones do.

What all contractors do is spend time. Time to figure out what and when. Time to figure out how and where. Time to figure out who. The most expensive part of any project is time. You are paying your contractor to go gray, grind his teeth, and deal with the frustrations of making it happen. You will never see the good ones frustrated!

Как низко можете вы пойти? Подвал бюджети 5 шагов Remodel

Posted: 02 Nov 2010 03:50 PM PDT

If you live in an area like Salt Lake City, where every house comes standard with a basement, then your home’s downstairs cave is probably still unfinished and very, very cold. But in a tight economy, more and more homeowners are turning to their empty basements to add an abundance of new space to their dwelling—not to mention increased value.

In fact, basement remodels are high on the Cost vs. Value list for 2009-10, bringing back at least 75.4% of that investment down the road. Find out what it would cost for a smartly planned basement remodel in your own home, and see if it's in the budget.

The 5 Step Budget Basement Remodel

And hey, we all know it can be easy to stand at the top of the basement stairs, scratching your head at where to begin. We hear you. Consider this checklist before starting on your basement, and make the process as seamless (and cost-effective) as possible.

1. Creative Brainstorming

Decide why you are motivated to change your basement from the unfinished storage space that it is, and what specifically you plan to use the space for. An open-spaced home gym, for instance, will require a different approach than adding a guest bed and bath. And then a creative art or music studio may require stain-resistant floors, for example, or soundproof walls.

2. Consider the Tasks

Once you have a specific project in mind, create a list of what the project will entail, with estimates. (A contractor comes in very handy from this point on—get referred to one here for free.) Common jobs might include insulation, flooring, windows, wall finishes, waterproofing, or ventilation.

3. Remember Proportions

Keep in mind that finishing flooring and walls for a playroom is a much less extensive job than adding plumbing and piping. Consider the heft of the job, and if it is worth the effort for what you want. If so, move forward with a contractor.

4. Save Where it Makes Sense

Where trying to complete a basement in your own spare time may result in one of countless unfinished basement projects, take the effort to waterproof or lay flooring on your own, two jobs which can be relatively simple for a DIY-er. And leave the large tasks to a contractor.

5. Get the Low-Down on Being Down Low

With less light and open spaces in a basement, keep the atmosphere calm and your pocketbook stuffed by sticking to essential furniture and thrift shop finds.

Как отремонтировать вакуум Oreck с сломленным поясом

Posted: 02 Nov 2010 10:15 AM PDT

Posted: 02 Nov 2010 09:00 AM PDT

Have you ever dreamed of living abroad but found yourself wondering exactly how far your buck would go in another country? Well, we've done the research for you and aim to put your foreign fantasy in perspective. Below is a list of some of the world's largest cities and a snapshot of what $500,000 USD would get you in each market.
Enjoy!

1. Paris, France
If you've ever dreamed of living in Paris, your 500K won't go very far in the City of Lights. Within this budget, you'll be able to grab a small apartment at best.

Area: 45 square meters
Bedrooms: 1
Bathrooms: 1
Amenities: View of a garden and some charm.

2. Saudi Arabia
If you can stand the sweltering desert heat and living amongst many war-torn countries, your 500K will get you a rather spacious villa in Saudi Arabia.

Area: 660 square meters
Bedrooms: 5
Bathrooms: 5+
Amenities: Unknown

3. London, UK
Widely known as one of the most expensive cities in the world, buying a home in London falls nothing short of its reputation. Though it will get you more than Paris, 500K won't get you much.

Area: 60 square meters
Bedrooms: 2
Bathrooms: 1
Amenities: Master bedroom, 23-foot garden, fireplace and hard wood floors.

4. Shanghai, China
When it comes to living in one the most compact cities in the world, surprisingly, just over 500K will get you a decent apartment that is pinned between the bustling Shanghai financial district and the Huangpu River.

Area: 173 square meters
Bedrooms: 3
Bathrooms: 2
Amenities: Front gate security, underground parking, close to shopping, restaurants and public transportation.

5. Mumbai, India
When you live in one of the most densely populated regions of the world, good space is hard to find. That said, 500K in India will get you a decent apartment but space is limited.

Area: 88 square meters
Bedrooms: 2
Bathrooms: 1
Amenities: Fully furnished.

6. Buenos Aires, Argentina
If South America is your desired destination, your 500K will go quite a bit further than some of the European and Asian markets. For that amount, you'll get a nice apartment with some respectable amenities!

Area: 162 square meters
Bedrooms: 3
Bathrooms: 2
Amenities: Amazing view from 20th floor, central location, 24 hour security, master bedroom, laundry, parking space and personal storage space.

7. Moscow, Russia
Unlike some of the other European cities on this list that will bleed you dry, 500K will buy a very spacious 3 level cottage in Russia.

Area: 180 square meters
Bedrooms: 6
Bathrooms: 2
Amenities: Laundry room, storage, balcony, garage, sauna, fireplace and "western" renovations.

8. Mexico City, Mexico
Topping the list with easily the most bang for your buck, buying real estate in Mexico is all that it's cracked up to be. Not only will 500K get you more square footage than anywhere else but the size of lot is clearly unmatched.

Area: 560 square meters
Bedrooms: 3
Bathrooms: 3
Amenities: 3,400 acre lot and 2 car garage.

9. Tokyo, Japan
Although 500K will get you an apartment at one of Japan's ski resorts, if you're looking to live in Tokyo, you can still manage to score a brand new apartment with some room to breathe.

Area: 80 square meters
Bedrooms: 3
Bathrooms: 2
Amenities: Brand new – built in 2009 and never before occupied!

10. Cairo, Egypt
Much like Mexico, Cairo is another great city to spend a little to get a lot. In fact, 500K gets you the most square footage of any other on the list in the form of a nice stand alone villa with a private garden.

Area: 600 square meters
Bedrooms: 6
Bathrooms: 3.5
Amenities: 3 story villa, garden view, terraces, master bedroom and garage.

Great home designs and remodels take advantage of the site and its immediate surroundings. We spend significant amounts of money on our yards, decks, and pools; however we don't always get our moneys worth. The way our interior spaces interact with these exterior ones can drastically change how we live in our homes.

The designs below blur the threshold that defines the indoors and out until the spaces combine. These homes open themselves up to nature and the designed spaces immediately adjacent. Living rooms become grand covered porches and dining rooms become outdoor cafés.

9 путей к получать ваш дом готово на праздники

Posted: 01 Nov 2010 09:00 AM PDT

The holidays – those being Thanksgiving, Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanzaa, Festivus, and other ‘Holy-Days’ grouped roughly, and conveniently, around the Winter solstice – tend to be looked upon as a mixed blessing by many. Holidays are a time to welcome the ones you love into the center of your world that is your home, right? At the end of the day, it’s also nice to be able to show it off. But, another consideration is all about preparations for visitors. That takes effort, and sometimes causes stress in an already busy life.

So, what’s called for well in advance of the holiday season, and the impending en masse visit to your abode, is a strategy to prepare for the holidays well before the crunch date. That’s where this post comes in. I’ve scoured the Internet for expert opinions, or just opinions from people who’ve been there, to help you get a jump on a plan to welcome your loved ones to your estates for turkey, mulled wine, and general holiday cheer well before the late November-and-into-December rush.

Take a look!

***

1. Get the numbers early
It seems obvious, but getting a guest list in your mind and then down on paper as early as possible is a prime place to start when getting your home ready for the holidays. You want to allow enough time to prepare your home (and your sanity!) for the volume of feet moving through it. You also want to respectfully give others a chance to organize their own lives in time to confirm that they’re actually coming, and find out if they have special requirements (transportation, accommodation, etc). It seems like a simple thing to mention. But, it’s vital, which is why it gets first place in this list. You can also use this step in recruiting help to prepare the meal!

Despite how well you plan, of course, sometimes the numbers take on a life of their own. Take a read of this article from eHow.com about how to prepare for unexpected holiday visitors.

2. Order specialty items early
Remember, you’re not alone when it comes to preparing for company. During the holidays, a lot of people are after the same items that you are. Ordering birds, cakes, trees, and other related items specific to your particular cultural traditions are best done early. This is not just for reasons of securing availability. But, doing things early will help you to minimize stress, and allow for a generous lead time should problems with delivery occur. Start a friendship with local butchers, bakers, candlestick makers (you get the idea), and ask their advice about when the best times to order specialty items are.

For one off-the-beaten-track option for ordering turkeys, check out this article on ordering turkeys online.

3. Stock your kitchen arsenal
The kitchen’s role as the nerve center of your home is really ramped up when holiday visitors come to call. So, making sure it’s ready is a great strategy when getting your home ready for the holidays. Clean your appliances thoroughly. If they’re older models, have them inspected when in doubt since they’ve got a big job ahead of them. Make sure you’ve got all of the pots, crockery, cutlery you need for the numbers, and for the meals, you’ve got in mind.

Clear out your pantry to make room for the items you’re sure you’re going to need for the oncoming season. The same goes for your freezer, which may need to host larger items than usual, like turkeys, and (later on) leftovers in greater quantities than usual.

For more tips, take a look at this article about how to prepare your kitchen for a holiday feast.

4. Think about seating
This is related to how many numbers you think you’re going to have. Like that step, this one seems simple and obvious. But making sure your guests are seated comfortably whether at the holiday table, or in your living areas before the meal begins can really set the tone for your special event. Sourcing fold up chairs, portable trays, and tables to serve as ‘kid’s tables’, is generally pretty inexpensive prospects. If you’re planning a self-serve buffet, you can rent tables that will serve this purpose very well.

Take a look at this article about creating more table space for holiday guests for more ideas.

5. Create space for kids.
For many, incorporating kids into a holiday event is a key area in making sure that the holidays are enjoyed by the whole family. Keeping children entertained, and making sure that your space is welcoming to children, is a great way to make sure that your holiday event is enjoyable for everyone. This could mean that your basement, spare room, rec room, whichever room, is stocked with art supplies, games, dress-up clothes, story books, electronic devices in order to keep the young ‘uns occupied and entertained.

Creating a place that is especially for the children gives them a sense that they are welcomed into your home, and have a literal place in your home while they’re there. The advantages of this is for your benefit, as well as for theirs of course, and for their parents too while they’re guests in your home.

Read this article for ideas on setting up more permanent kid’s play rooms in your home, whether for your own kids or for frequently visiting children in your life.

6. “CCC” (Clear Closets of Clutter)
While throwing coats on beds, and chucking footwear higgledy-piggledy onto the floor of a front hall closet is a staple experience for many during the holiday season, there is an alternative; no clutter, and plenty of room for all! One subtle addition to your holiday event is the visual presentation of your closet, one of the first impressions people will have of your space.

Making room for them on a literal level communications all kinds of positive messages about how welcome they are on a symbolic level, too. So, “CCC” – clear your closets of clutter – and make sure that your guests know you’ve made a place for them. Take those old boots and worn-out coats down to the thrift store, put seasonal clothes into storage, buy some shoe organizing units and boot mats, and let the lack of clutter in your closet be your ambassador when company comes.

To help you get started, take a look at these 5 ways to organize a hall closet.

7. Think about safety
Once you have a houseful of people, the need for safety while everyone is in close quarters rises. This doesn’t mean that because of the holidays your house has become a potential death trap. But, it does mean making sure that cleaning products in the bathroom is put out of reach of visiting children. It means making sure that glassware and knick-knacks are also safely tucked away to avoid breakage and potential injury. It means putting poisonous holiday plants out of reach of visiting cats and dogs. And it means being mindful of open, festive flames too – candles, and sparks from the yuletide hearth.

For more considerations, read more home safety tips to prepare your home for the holidays.

8. Think about a mess-prevention/clean-up strategy
Not only do you want to avoid the kind of mess that makes you say ‘never again!’ once your guests have left, you want to make sure you’ve got some strategies in place before they even arrive. For instance, red wine spills are exceptionally common. So, make sure you’ve got the materials you need to see to them – bicarbonate of soda, soda water. Think about a plastic dropsheet under children’s tables, and under wet footwear to make moisture and food fragments easy to deal with. Think about asking your guests to volunteer for clean-up duties after the meals. After all, many hands make light work at any time of the year.

For more tips on minimizing mess, check out Debbie Weiner’s Slobproof post on this very blog.

9. Prepare guest accommodations
Traveling plays a big part in the autumn and winter holiday season. So does bad weather. In the light of both of these it may be, either expectedly or not, that your guests may need to stay for a longer period of time. Preparing a guest room, blow up matteresses, sleeping bags, linen, pillows, extra toothbrushes, towels, and other toiletries, may be a smart move especially if weather looks like it might be unforgiving.

Sometimes guests staying over a longer term should be entirely expected. And sometimes, putting a mass of friends and relatives up at your own place just isn’t practical. In this case, it might be a good idea to book rooms at your local bed & breakfast locations over the holiday period. Also, see if local hotel chains in your area allow for reservations over this period a month or so in advance.

For more ideas, check out this article about preparing for overnight guests.

So, there you are. 9 ways to make sure your home is ready for the holidays, and that you’re ready, too.

Cheers,

Rob.

2. Biomanufactured Brick

Biomanufactured Brick (credit)

Due to the process in which bricks are created, it takes a lot of energy to build a brick building. It can also be quite expensive. The Biomanufactured Brick invented by Ginger Krieg Dosier, a professor at the American University of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates uses a far less energy dependent process. Sand is placed in a mold, mixed with bacteria and a hardening agent, and after the sand solidifies, a brick is made. The bricks have no need for mortar because they continue to bind together after the bricks have hardened.

3. Light Transmitting Concrete

LiTraCon – Light Transmitting Concrete (credit)

Thousands of optical glass fibers are poured into a concrete mix and, when cured, light transmitting concrete results. Since glass (silica) is a component in concrete and the fibers' diameter is relatively small, there is no reduction in strength or stability.

4. Electro Conductive Wall Board

Imagine a home without electrical outlets. Instead of plugging electronics into an outlet, you insert the plug directly into the gypsum wallboard anywhere in the room. Eric Olson of Superficial Studio has invented an Electro Conductive Wallboard that will do just that. Paired with a low-voltage surface, this gypsum board could mean significant energy savings as well as convenience.

5. Bendable Wood

Thanks to a creative curing process, Bendywood allows designers to mold solid hardwood into almost any shape imaginable. The most common uses are furniture and spiral stair rails, but the possibilities are only limited to our imagination.

Любознательние творческие способности

Set your eye on the fabulous work of Ronit Baranga; this talented Israeli Sculptor. Baranga may have studied Psychology and Hebrew Literature but art finally was meant to be her true vocation. After finishing University she began her Art studies at Bet Berl College and continued at Yael Shkedi's silver and gold craft school.

Bringing sculpture alive (credit)

Since then she hasn't stopped creating some of the most beautiful sculptures we have ever seen. What captures more the attention of the viewer is the enchanted atmosphere that surrounds her creations, that "special something" hard to define. Hands and mouths appear where least expected, threads that look like spider nests give you the impression of having found some forgotten treasures, bracelets suffocate their victims and at the same time want to set them free and everyday objects seem almost alive.

What more could we ask for? Ronit certainly has a very vivid imagination and although she flirts with the extremes, her sculptures still have an earthy charm. She thinks and she then creates.

One look at the sculptures of Anna Wili Highfield and you are mesmerized by the craftsmanship and imagination.. Highfield is a figurative artist based out of Sydney, Australia who creates magnificent sculptures of animals using paper or copper wire. Anna Wili Highfield horses and birds appear to be her favorite subjects, and each one holds unto itself a different personality.

The paper sculptures are created from archival cotton paper, that is painted, then sewn together, to create the figure of an animal. She say’s "I like materials that have a bit of resistance to them. I don't like things that are too malleable that you can do anything with. I like paper and copper because they have an integrity to them that you cannot manipulate too much. I like materials that have limitations if that makes sense."

Highfield has found joy in creating these creatures out of paper, a style that came about accidentally late one night while she was pregnant and decided to make a present for her unborn daughter. She came across some paper and began making a small wren –although at this point she used glue to assemble the pieces. The artist had such fun making the sculpture that she began making more and more.

Many artists have used pencils to create art but Dalton Ghetti creates miniature masterpieces on the tips of pencils. Dalton, who works as a carpenter, has been making his tiny graphite works for about 25 years.

Amazing minature sculptures on the tips of pencils (credit)

The 49 year old said: "At school I would carve a friend's name into the wood of a pencil and then give it to them as a present. Later, when I got into sculpture, I would make these huge pieces from things like wood, but decided I wanted to challenge myself by trying to make things as small as possible. I experimented sculpting with different materials, such as chalk, but one day I had an eureka moment and decided to carve into the graphite of a pencil"

Dalton uses three basic tools to make his incredible creations, a razor blade, sewing needle and sculpting knife. He even refuses to use a magnifying glass and has never sold any of his work, only given it away to friends. He said: "I use the sewing needle to make holes or dig into the graphite. I scratch and create lines and turn the graphite around slowly in my hand"

Posted: 29 Oct 2010 09:00 AM PDT

Находящся в странно macabre настроении, мы составляли список 5 путей ваш дом может убить вас. Нетоксические стратегии для Бич-Свободного дома

Posted: 28 Oct 2010 09:00 AM PDT

Are pests a problem in your property? Do you want to deal with them without using potentially harmful chemicals? Designer and homeowner advice expert Jessica Ackerman weighs in on some tips to do just that. Take a look!

***

Spiders, and ants, and rodents, oh my!

There is never a shortage of pests for homeowners to worry about, and if you're like me, the idea of sharing your home with pests is certainly disconcerting. When the home is set upon by these crawling critters, a first instinct is invariably to turn to toxic pesticides to get rid of the little invaders. I know that I have been willing to "nuke" these creepy-crawlies at times in the past just to be rid of them.

But there are alternative, non-toxic strategies that you can use to keep your home pest-free – without using chemicals that can be harmful to your family and our fragile planet. For example, the natural chemical alternative known as borate can be used on lumber to repel insects while not harming humans.

Barrier Methods
The easiest way to deal with pests in the home is probably to keep them from entering in the first place. If you do a complete inspection of your home, chances are you will find plenty of little cracks and crevices where insects and other pests can get in. Use a tube of caulk to fix any cracks you might find, both inside your home and around the exterior walls. Using caulk in the house to fill small cracks will make your home much less desirable to insects by reducing nesting and hiding locations. Use screens on all windows and crawl spaces, and keep them in good repair. Cleanliness is also important, since dirt, food crumbs and dirty dishes can attract pests to your home. Keep food items in tightly closed containers and vacuum on a regular basis.

Insect and Animal Traps
Traps are a well-known way of dealing with insects and other pests. Although some people have an aversion to dealing with the trapped pests, I certainly prefer this method to using dangerous chemicals in my home. There are sticky traps, flypaper and “bug zappers” that work well for insects, glue boards and snap traps that can be used for mice, and larger traps that can be used for rats and other larger rodents. Traps are inexpensive, easy to use, and have a proven track record for keeping homes pest-free without resorting to pesticides and other chemicals.

Natural Repellents
I mentioned previously that borate is often used to keep insects away. But, there are also plenty of other natural substances that you can use to help keep your home pest-free. Herbs such as wormwood, eucalyptus, peppermint oil, and cloves have been used for generations to keep insects and pests away from the home. Other natural repellents include cedar wood and a sprinkling of baby powder. However, it’s important to remember that “natural” doesn’t always mean “safe,” since some people are allergic to certain plant oils. Be sure to test for sensitivities before using in your home. Also, although sprinkling a little borax in the corners of your cabinets will help repel insects without resorting to pesticides, you should keep it away from children and pets, since it can be toxic if eaten.

Thanks a lot, Jessica!

This over the edge swimming pool has two faces one that is definitely classical and, as dusk arrives, one that is dramatic. The fibre optic lights intensify as the bright lights of the city come into view. Lightscaping a pool to blend in with it’s natural surroundings takes vast experience and huge talent, and Cipriano Landscape Design has all of this plus more having been creating atmospheric pools with dramatic lighting for many years. Technically their lighting systems are state of the art, with the focus being on drama to romantic settings at the flick of a switch.

The professional team at LifeScapes believe that a person’s outdoor living area has to make a big statement about their lifestyle. This scene overlooking the breathtaking Washington Cascades could actually make you believe you were viewing some special effects of an epic movie. The designer has cleverly used curved edges, with flagstone and stamped concrete to compliment the natural surroundings of clouds, water and the mountains, making you feel you are at one with nature and the elements.

With breathtaking views over the Hudson River, this unique poolscape had to have some dramatic features, including the concrete panels surrounding the spa in a rich red color, and the subtle glass tiling throughout the pool and spa. Creating a place to chat or soak up the view and surroundings is a dividing wall in the shallow end. Group Works has a long history of building swimming pools and were the very first to create a negative edged swimming pool in the Northeast. Another stunning pool with a stunning view looks very much the perfect adult entertaining area, with the added genius of creating an Ipe deck as a cantilever over the cliff side. The pool also offers the advantage of an outdoor kitchen, stone flooring, an outdoor fire and a lighting system to add drama and ambience at nightfall. The Swimming Man was started by Greg Smith of Texas as he loved the concept of using water as an art form, and wanted to offer clients his ideas and vision. Quite early in his career he developed strong principles about design and high quality building, where he could then use his natural artistic mind to create outside areas that compliment the environment while making a statement about the owners lifestyle.

Apart from pretending to disappear over the edge towards the natural wilderness this pool has more detail than what the casual eye can see. The stones that step towards the spa are carefully placed to compliment the smoothness of the pool, and the natural stones around the terrace blend perfectly with the surroundings. Ocean Quest has been recognised throughout the industry as a pioneer in the design and building of top quality advanced swimming pools.

Sitting by this pool as dusk arrives you could be fooled to think you were sitting by a huge mirror. The water moves like glass around the fountains and statue without as much as a ripple. The deck area offers the perfect setting for elegant evenings or an intimate soiree. Many clients have described the work by Advanced Pool Designs, as elegant, graceful and simplicity at its best.

Today's guest post is from online writer Veronica Davis, who has worked with several home improvement companies. She's a previous Planet Green blogger and shares some tips for taking care of your precious hardwood floors.

***

Does the sound of shoes clicking on hardwood make you smile? Do you enjoy a gorgeous hardwood floor that's just been waxed or the beauty of a cozy, wood covered living space? If so you are probably an enthusiast of the hardwood floor. While hardwood floors are fairly low maintenance, they still require upkeep. Follow these simple suggestions and keep your hardwood floors looking new all the time.

The first thing to keep in mind before cleaning hardwood floors is the type of finish that was used on your flooring. There are some floors that have been surface-sealed. These are generally wood floors that are newer and are sealed with polycyclic, polyurethane or urethane. These materials are both stain resistant and water resistant. All you have to do is the occasional dusting and mopping.

Other types of hardwood may be treated with a penetrating seal or an oil finish. These types of woods need to be protected with a liquid or paste wax. Additionally, there are varnished floors, lacquered, shellacked and untreated floors. It is important to remember that these floors are not resistant to water, spills or your everyday wear and tear. These floors should also be treated with a liquid wax or if you prefer, a paste wax.

How to clean sealed floors

Avoid using oils, waxes, and furniture sprays. They will leave a residue. This residue will create a very slick surface, which can be dangerous.

Also, avoid wax. Wax can make recoating your hardwood more difficult down the line.

ŸRemember water (or water and vinegar) alone will not do the trick. Water won't remove the buildup of dirt. Adding vinegar to your water has the potential to make your floors look dull.

ŸNever use a soaking wet sponge to mop with. Always wring your sponge out completely. It is important that you mop in the same direction that the grain of the wood goes. When your water begins to get dingy, get a new clean bucket.

ŸIf you see small cracks in your floors, don't go into a frenzy. During the cold winter months, wood floors can shrink or crack. As the weather gets warmer, the cracks will get smaller. You can use a humidifier to help with any cracking issues.

ŸIf you are not sure what type of product is best for your hardwood, contact the manufacture of your floor. It can be difficult to do sometimes, though. So, if you can't get a hold of them, you can normally safely use soap and water.

ŸSweep every day. Follow your sweeping by mopping a couple of times a week, especially in areas that are high traffic.
ŸIf scuff marks become a problem, use a damp sponge that has a little bit of baking soda on it. This will help eliminate them.

Remember to maintenance your floors. Even floors that are designed to not need extensive maintenance will require a recoating approximately every now and then. Normally every five to seven years.

How to care for oil treated, penetrating-seal treated, shellacked, lacquered, varnished and untreated hardwood:

ŸAvoid using water-based, acrylic and one-step furniture waxes. These products can leave your floors looking white, feeling slick, and can actually trap dirt into your floors.

ŸAvoid getting wax floors wet by mopping. Your best bet is to use a gentle vacuum or to sweep your hardwood regularly.
ŸStrip your floors with a stripper when needed in order to remove the buildup of old wax.

ŸOnce or twice a year, use the stripper and apply a new coat of wax. How often you do this is going to depend on how high traffic your floors are.

Thanks Veronica!

She recommends checking for any Sears's coupons if you need a hardwood-friendly vacuum, any molding pieces or other helpful things for repair and cleaning.

Cheers,

Rob

Mathieu Lehanneur the French interior designer was employed by Veuve Clicquot to design and create a specialized bed for jet-lagged guests of their 16th century Hôtel du Marc in the traditional French town of Reims. This specialized bed designed for jet-lagged guests named "Once Upon a Dream" was an exhibit at the Milan Design Week 2010 at Zona Tortona.

(credit)

The concept behind the design is to create an atmosphere that resynchronises the room so guests fall into a dream induced sleep. The bed design was carefully researched by using information about people who suffer with insomnia and chronic sleep deprivation.

Information was based around A sleeping disorder specialist named Doctor Alain Nicola who stated that falling asleep is like moving onto another state, and gradually going through different sates of consciousness. This statement and further research gave Lehanneur the concept to begin his design. The software he developed to control the synchronisation helps the body and mind to relax through the different stages of falling asleep.

(Credit)

First of all the automatic curtain closes, and the room temperature settles at 19 degrees. Then you activate the light dimmer by touching the plant overhead. The dimming takes 15 minutes gradually from 100 lux to 0 and an acoustic low white noise is activated ensuring the sleep is isolated from outside noise.

The natural purring sound of the noise relaxes the brain and with the body at ideal sleep temperature sleep comes easily. On waking up a 15 minute process takes place during which the temperature rises 2 degrees and lightness is activated rising from 0 - 2500 lux.

(credit)

Unfortunately the bed only sleeps one person at a time but it can be programmed from 1 - 12 hours according to the sleep requirements of the person. Being a mix of science and fairytale the well thought out design and materials help people refresh quickly and adapt to the time and new place.

Skimp на вашем Siding - знайте когда заменить

Posted: 26 Oct 2010 10:59 AM PDT

It can be hard to determine the right time to replace siding on your house—and how to go about it. There’s the choice of which contractor to hire, and what material to replace with.

While it may be tempting to skimp out on professional help, or to use less expensive materials, remember that you usually get what you pay for—and when it comes to the curb appeal and selling value of your home, you want quality.

When to Replace?

Although new siding can revolutionize the exterior and curb appeal of your home, aesthetics isn't the only reason to replace. When siding and the space beneath the panels begin to break down and even rot, ignoring the need to replace can encourage even larger structural damage. Have a contractor come out to give you an estimate—this way, you'll know for sure if replacement is necessary and what options are in your budget.

Siding Materials to Use

An increasingly common choice for homeowners, vinyl can strike a good balance between cost and aesthetic. Vinyl is relatively low-cost at around $2-7 or more for panels installed by a contractor and low-maintenance (no more repainting, for one thing). One homeowner said that since they've put up vinyl siding, "people have been stopping by and asking where we got it," and neighbors and total strangers have named theirs the best house on the block.

Consider also concrete siding, which looks like wood and can even be painted, or steel vertical siding, which is more expensive that vinyl but often also holds up better over time.

Contractors to Find

Finding a great contractor is as easy as searching right here on CalFinder. While installing siding can be a head-scratching new experience for the general public, contractors are extremely proficient at streamlining such a task.

Remember to draw up a written contract together on even the smallest siding jobs. They will include a final price for the project, materials to be used, and dates within which the project will be done—as well as the manufacturer's warranty. You can start comparing quotes in a few minutes by filling out an estimate form. Happy remodeling!

Here’s a follow up post to the one we wrote last Friday, before an episode of Debbie Travis’ All For One program, which featured our stonework, railings, and deck tiles, was aired. This is the episode in which Debbie Travis oversees her design for an outdoor living area for a local hero to resident skater kids.

As well as dealing with the problems which often arise during a project like this, Debbie and a group of teens championed a cause beyond the project; the construction of a skate park which had been promised to them, yet put on the backburner by the town council because of other pressing priorities. Yet, the program proved to be something of a rallying point to the community around the needs of teens in the area.

This effort around the skatepark is connected specifically to the kind of work their mentor (and recipient of Debbie’s home reno makeover in the episode) Jack Kelly; working with teens, and empowering them to pursue their interests, while developing their character and leadership potential, too.

And to boot, the results of the reno were astounding. Here are some selected pics of the project for your consideration. Click each one to see it in full:

We were honored that some of our products were used to create such a transformative, and welcoming space for someone so deserving. And speaking of that, here’s a post from Debbie Travis’ blog, which includes a note of thanks from Jack himself.

For you Canadian readers who may have missed the broadcast, you can watch Debbie Travis All-For-One Windsor Nova Scotia on CBC.

Cheers!

Rob.

11 самый шальной Halloween украсили дома

When it comes to the holiday spirit, it seems everyone saves their decorating energy for Christmas – it's not often that people go all out for any other occasion. Well, with Halloween just around the corner, we decided to prove that there are a few October diehards out there. Enjoy these impressive Halloween homes.

1. The Pumpkin Palace
This home is one of the subtler of the bunch but if you look closely, you'll see well over 100 neatly carved pumpkins lighting up the night. Though the other houses might be a bit more chaotic in their approach, imagine the time it took to carve each and every Jack-O-Lantern!?

2. The Haunted House
While most of the homes on this list go for a more cartoon-ish appeal, this spooky place takes a legitimate crack at the classic haunted house. Sure, by day it's probably a nice suburban home but with some creative lighting, they've managed to turn their upper-middle-class home into an eerie site.

3. The Neighborhood Favorite
Here's a video of a lady in her neighborhood that has earned the reputation of dominating when it comes to Halloween decorations. Relaying mostly on lights and a few props, this is a pretty impressive display of holiday cheer.

4. The Casa de Cartoons
Speaking of cartoon-ish, the owners of this home definitely went for the novel look over the authentic. Showcasing a twelve-foot Homer Simpson, Sponge Bob Square Pants and a pair of life-sized Incredible Hulks (moonlighting as Frankenstein), there is nothing subtle about this Halloween home.

5. The Vegas Holiday
Whether this is a quaint suburban home or a tacky Vegas hotel, we may never know but it's impressive nonetheless. Who knows what flamingos and frogs have to do with Halloween but what is certain is that the decorating team behind this crazy Halloween house certainly left their shame at the door and went all out for the holiday.

6. The New York Nightmare
You know you've done a substantial job of decorating when you can't even see the house itself! Yep, this New York City residence definitely went all-in for the holiday when they slathered their tiny lot with more decorations than square footage.

7. The House of the Living Dead
It's probably a more impressive site by night but this place has done a great job of covering such a large lot with plenty to see. Aside from the impressive amount of skeletons, zombies and tombstones occupying the home, you have to wonder where they keep that 6-foot tarantula for the other eleven months of the year.

8. The Hungry House
Leading the Less is More campaign, this Halloween home doesn't have a lot going on but it's most definitely one of the more ominous of the bunch. Boasting nothing more than a couple stylish Jack-O-Lanterns, the fact that this home looks alive (and out to kill you) is reason enough to make this list.

9. The Tiny Terror
Judging by the picture, there's not a lot of room at this small home for extensive decorations but that doesn't seem to limit the visionaries. Getting the most bang for their buck, this humble home has enough Halloween eye candy to compete with the big hitters.

10 . The Suburban Graveyard
Making the list as the last private residence, this friendly home turned eerie graveyard is a site to see. Though it's nothing more than a collection of store-bought tombstones, you'd have to be pretty brave to be caught there after dark.

11. The Corvinestilor Castle
Of course, you can't have Halloween and haunted houses without Count Dracula and the iconic castle that started it all. Topping the list for most impressive Halloween decorations is the Corvinestilor Castle in Transylvania because it doesn't need decorations to make it any spookier than it already is – the legend and the architecture speak for themselves.

Стеклянные плитки как акценты в установках плитки

Last week, we heard from Roger from FloorElf.com about ways to minimize mold growth and excessive moisture collection in a tile shower installation. To continue his discussion on the various ins and outs of tile, talks here about glass tile, this time in terms of how glass tiles as accessories can really add flair to your space, including that waterproofed shower.

***

Have you ever found that perfect glass tile that would look absolutely fantastic in your kitchen or bathroom? Me too! Then, after a bit of quick math I started looking at the ceramic and porcelain section. Completely glass tile installations look great, unfortunately they do not fit into every budget. With a bit of planning, though, you can still have that perfect tile and be able to afford it.

I often install glass tile as simply an accent stripe, insert or even a small, main focal point of an otherwise plain tile installation. With only three or four square feet of that perfect glass tile you can have the look you want and not blow the budget out of the water.

Buying Glass Tile
Most glass tile is sold in one square foot sheets which are mounted on a backing for quick and easy installation. These sheets can be cut down to accommodate any size insert or row you want. By choosing a nice field tile as your main tile in the installation and using the glass as only an accent you get a great looking installation for a reasonable price.

Individual glass tile can be found in sizes ranging from 3/4″ X 3/4″ up to nearly any size you want. You can find many different sizes and styles on BuildDirect’s glass tile page. Choosing a glass tile that accentuates or contrasts your main field tile can turn a very ordinary installation into a unique space. There are also many glass mosaics which utilize travertine and other natural stones as well as metallic tiles into the mix.

For a normal bathtub surround, that is the three walls around a regular five-foot bathtub, there is normally eleven lineal feet of wall. With only three square feet of glass tile mosaics you can have a three-inch glass stripe running through the shower. With four square feet you can have a four-inch stripe.

If you would rather have the glass diamond inserts you only need two square feet to give you a total of eighteen inserts that are four-inches square or thirty-two inserts at three inches square. Either of which would be more than enough to scatter throughout your installation.

Glass Tile Backpslashes
You can also install a glass tile backsplash on the bathroom vanity with a simple three or four inch stripe and bullnose to match your field tile. Intersperse the glass throughout the entire installation to bring it all together. Depending on the size of your vanity top this usually only requires two or three additional feet of glass.

Glass Tile For Shower ‘Niches’
With a bit more of the mosaics you can line the back of a shower niche and really have the glass stand out as a focal point in your shower. You can have both an accent stripe and use the glass as diamond or square inserts as well. Run a vertical stripe, the possibilities literally are endless. Get creative!

Glass Tile As Floor Accents
With a bit (lot) more glass you can even tie the entire bathroom design together like the steam shower and master bathroom floor in the last two photos. The shower has glass one foot out of each corner as well as one large diamond insert on each shower wall. The floor contains four-inch square glass diamond inserts. It really turns an otherwise plain porcelain tile into a very unique tile installation.

Keep in mind that not all glass tile is approved nor recommended for installation on a floor. The glass must be rated for that particular application or it will not survive. The last thing you want are busted glass tiles on your bathroom floor. Please ensure, should you choose to do this, that the tile is rated for floors.

With a bit of planning and some creative ideas you can have that perfect glass tile in your kitchen or bathroom and still not break the bank. Sketch out your ideas on some graph paper and play around with it. When you find the perfect design, add up the amount of glass you will actually need – you may be a bit surprised that it isn’t as much as you thought.

Thanks again, Roger!

Though the economy has pushed many Americans into a corner, bathroom renovations can still be a change we make for the better without breaking the bank. You can hold off on replacing that medicine cabinet and retro tile for only so long. And when that breaking point—that this must change now point—comes, you can move forward with your bathroom renovation without massive stress.

Bathroom Upgrades that Pay Off

For the biggest bang for your buck, add a separate bath and shower. According to a 2010 National Association of Home Builders report released in January, a separate tub and shower are among the top 10 features that builders would most likely include. And costs are not nearly as prohibitive as you think—check out a few price quotes and see how much contractors are willing to discount.

Whether you're sharing with a partner, or have children sharing down the hallway, a double vanity can be a relatively simple change that goes a long way. Squeeze two sinks into a 48-inch-wide space (IKEA even makes a 39-inch-wide wall model). Pedestal sinks as well look amazing in numbers.

Consider also the impacts that details such as light fixtures, hardware, and finishes make. While bathroom appliances add functionality and beauty to a bathroom, it's the details that give the room the quality finish and distinction you want in a remodel.

Although the toilet isn't necessarily the place to add charm, look to floor finishes like bamboo, solid countertops like granite, and wallpaper and cabinet hardware that will last and wow. Flooring installation is especially cheap with bathrooms—you can get estimates showing just how reasonable it is.

Bathroom Remodel Return on Investment

If possible, don't stop with one renovation—consider adding a new bath. Paul Emrath of the National Association of Home Builders figured in an analysis that an extra bath adds up to 20 percent to a home's value, which makes adding a bath even more valuable than adding another bedroom.

Remodeling's Cost vs. Value Report of 2009-10 sites that even a "midrange" bathroom renovation priced at roughly $17,000 can net you 69% of its cost in added value to your home.

In all of the scrimping and saving, minor bathroom renovations can make a huge difference in your home's value and your daily life. Grab your free estimates and get started today.
