It would be an understatement to say that new home construction has seen a bit of a slow-down in the past few years. But with people spending more time in their homes and less time out on the town, many are resorting to small home remodeling projects in order to keep their space looking like new. Not only are contractors easier to come by right now, but they're also offering major price discounts across the board.

American Kitchens are Bigger and Cozier than Ever

It's no secret – large kitchens have traditionally been a sign of wealth. But in one of the greatest shifts in home remodeling I've ever seen, the kitchen is expanding in new and accessible ways. Don't have the square footage? Knock down adjacent walls and open up the floor plan for the ultimate family room. Homeowners are building office nooks next to stovetops, kids are claiming the kitchen table as their go-to spot for homework time, and extra seating space in the form of banquet benches has also made this room more conducive to larger group hang-outs. The kitchen has become the gathering spot for families to work, cook, and just spend time together.

… Not to Mention Sleek and Versatile

Also in the kitchen are the stainless steel appliances that many experts thought would have been outdated by now. Selzer says this design staple is here to stay, simply because it matches everything and looks top-of-the-line and sophisticated in any home.

Stylish Storage Trends Evolving

In addition, as people are learning to live with less, they are letting go of more and incorporating stylish storage into their design plan. Instead of building additional closets or expanding on the ones that are already present, people are looking to add things like storage-friendly furniture to keep their space clutter-free and super easy to organize.

Affordable Green Living on the Rise

And of course, as America becomes more aware of its impact on the environment, homeowners do as well – thus the increase in "green living." What used to be a trend for urbanites on the cutting-edge has now gone mainstream. Greater attention is being paid to making these green changes accessible and affordable for the average family.

While some of these trends may be just that – a trend – a new concentration on the home as the center of our lives and society is most certainly here to stay. At least for a little while…

In this age of tight budgets and green thinking, when it comes to a new floor, what is to be done?

As to the green side of things, there is certainly an argument for installing bamboo floors. This is particularly true if you live in a new property. But, if you live in an older building, with hardwood floors already in place that may look a little worse for wear, what then?

Sometimes, in situations like these, it makes sense to see what’s around and see how it can be best utilized.

For those of you looking to invest in an unfinished floor to gain the vintage look that Kevin got with his refinishing job on his existing floors, you can see that the results are easily (and not very expensively) achievable. The great thing about a maple floor, which is what Kevin has, is that they tend to be very long-lasting. Located in the Mojave Desert, Cal-Earth (The California Institute of Earth Art and Architecture) is at the cutting edge of Earth and Ceramic Architecture technologies today. Its scope spans technical innovations published by NASA for lunar and Martian construction to housing design and development for the world's homeless for the United Nations.

Your founder Nader Khalili developed superadobe structures, what are they? Are they comfortable? Where did he find inspiration?

Superadobe is a patented technology which uses long uncut sand bags and barbed wire to build structures that are primarily vaults and domes. By using universal principals to build simple structures we create sustainable homes that are fire proof, hurricane proof, tornado proof and highly earthquake resistant.

The homes are very comfortable because they are built in harmony with nature so the balance of structure and elements create a holistic, safe and sustainable experience.

The inspiration for these structures is a hybrid of timeless architecture that has been used around the world for millennia, and an innovative design created by Architect Nader Khalili for building on the moon and Mars.

You have a bigger structure, what is Eco-dome? How was it conceived?

The Eco-Dome is a simple structure that a nuclear family can live in comfortably. The structure was originally conceived for building on the moon. It is also known as moon cocoon.

The climate is one of the most important issues when building, have you tested these houses in different meteorological conditions? What are the limits of these structures? (e. g. snow, hurricanes, etc.)

These structures can be built in almost any environment. Basic modifications will have to be made from climate to climate but the encompassing principal is universal. That is why NASA considers these structures as viable solution for building in hostile places like the moon and Mars.

The founding philosophy is the equilibrium of the natural elements, what are Cal-Earth's building principles? How do you manage to keep the equilibrium?

Nature keeps the equilibrium. We honor the balance, learn from it and apply its lessons to the work.

Is this way of building more popular outside America or there is an emerging and important sustainable movement that empowers these techniques?

The architecture has a profound growing grass roots movement in America and abroad.

You normally have open house days, how do people react when they are inside one of your structures?

It seems that everyone who comes to open house has a profound experience. Once people experience the architecture first hand they are hungry to live in it. After all it is the most non-toxic, green sustainable home that one could possible live in, and you can build it yourself.

Your organization has an educational focus, how can people access your workshop? What is the most usual profession of your students? Where are they from?

Our students come from every profession imaginable and they come from all over the world. Anyone who wants to become empowered to build their own home should come and study with us.

The workshop is very easy to sign up for. Just go to Cal-earth’s workshops page, fill the application out and send it along with an essay and deposit to hold your space. Workshops fill up quickly so the earlier you sign up the better.
