Next in my HOW series are some quick tips for how you can check for a broken furnace or heating unit. If you do not feel comfortable following these steps, simply call a licensed and professional heating contractor to perform a System Inspection for you. First, turn on your furnace to check that it's operable if you haven't operated the heat so far this season. To do so, switch your thermostat to heat mode and increase the temperature. If there is no hot air, try turning up the thermostat to a higher temperature. There will probably be a short delay, typically less than a minute, before the blower comes on and starts moving warm air. You should feel the air from the vents warming quickly. If you hear no air moving after a couple minutes or feel no difference in temperature, switch the thermostat to the off position. Check for dust or dirt in or around the thermostat by lifting the thermostat cover. Dirt can impact the thermostat's calibration. Be careful not to jar the thermostat's components, this can cause the thermostat to malfunction. It's also important for some older thermostats to be level on the wall, so check that the thermostat is perfectly level. If there is excess dirt or corrosion, replace the thermostat or seek a professional to replace it for you. If the thermostat is operating properly and appears clean and level, it may not be the culprit. Go to the fuse box and check the fuse or circuit breaker for the furnace. Even if your furnace is already operating properly, it's a good idea to check your home's circuit breakers regularly. If the circuit breaker for the furnace is tripped to the off position (or half-way), switch it fully to the off position, then firmly return it to the on position. If it trips back to the off position again immediately or in a short period of time, there could be a problem requiring professional repair service. Do not attempt to adjust the electrical service box yourself. If the furnace circuit breaker was not tripped or you resolved the situation, try turning on the thermostat again and see if there is hot air. If there is still no warm air or the system remains inoperable, examine the outside of the furnace itself for any obvious problems, like a buildup of dirt and dust, burn marks, unusual noises or any other indications of a potential problem. If your furnace is a newer high efficiency model, it may be vented out to one of the side walls of your home. Check the vent pipes to be sure they are unobstructed and there is nothing blocking the opening. While there check your furnace filter and replace or clean it. Air filters should be checked at least every three months. Finally, if they can be accessed, examine the duct work for any signs of cracking or unsealed joints. If you notice any of these issues it's probably due to a lack of professional maintenance. It's easy to ignore the blood, sweat and tears that construction crews of old must have endured in order to erect some of the world's most notable structures. That said, we'd like to pay tribute to some of the greatest construction feats of all time and the crews that made them possible. Built between 250 BC and 1450 AD to protect the Chinese Empire's northern borders from the invasion of Mongolians and other nomadic groups, the Great Wall of China is a series of pure stonewalls that anyone would recognize. Spanning over 3,889.5 miles of actual wall, this Great Wall boasts the longest duration of construction and claimed the most human lives of any construction project in history. 2. The Great Pyramid of Giza Though the Egyptians built many pyramids that were structurally ahead of their time, the Great Pyramid of Giza is the most notable. Home of the Sphinx and consisting of 2.3 million limestone blocks that were lifted and placed by human hands (some sourced from over 500 miles away), this pyramid took countless human lives and over 20 years to construct. Completed in 2560 BC, this particular construction masterpiece is considered the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the World. Though it's a more modern feat, the Panama Canal is widely touted as one of history's greatest feats of construction and engineering. Started in 1904 and completed in 1914, on paper, it's a simple 48-mile ship canal that connects the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean but the obstacles overcome to complete the task were quite complex. Though modern sporting arenas are a dime-a-dozen, The Colosseum in Rome, Italy, is the original gaming venue that baffled onlookers of the ancient world – a construction feat like no other before it. Built between 70 and 80 AD on the outskirts of the Roman Forum, this flagship site of the Roman Empire once seated over 50,000 spectators and has an entire underground maze of corridors that rivals the complexity of the exterior. In the end, it has withstood countless fires, earthquakes and invasions of foreign armies. 5. The Central Railroad of Peru
While many railroads spider across the world, historically speaking, The Central Railroad of Peru is the most impressive. Constructed between 1851 and 1907, this spectacular railway is more than just a simple straight shot. In fact, it consists of over 1,000 miles of rail that ventures through the mountainous peaks of the Andes (15,830 feet above sea level), crosses 41 bridges and burrows through 60 tunnels along the way. Another of the more modern of these construction feats, the Golden Gate Bridge is an undeniable accomplishment in the world of engineering and construction – the mother of all bridges. Completed in 1937, the Golden Gate is a 1.7-mile suspension bridge that spans the opening of the San Francisco Bay into the Pacific Ocean and has been recognized as one of the Seven Modern Wonders of the World for its innovative design and ability to withstand the elements. 7. The Taj Mahal Built as a tribute to Shah Jahan's third wife, the Taj Mahal is one of the most recognized buildings in the world and boasts its fair share of accomplishments that makes it one of the greatest feats in construction history. Located in Agra, India, the beautiful structure was built between 1632 and 1653 by the sweat of 20,000 workers, 1,000 load-bearing elephants and a teams of 30 oxen that transported marble and other materials up a specially constructed 9.3-mile ramp leading to the construction site. 8. The Hagia Sophia Originally constructed as an orthodox basilica in Istanbul, Turkey, the Hagia Sophia is noted for its massive dome that is said to have "changed the history of architecture." Completed in 360 AD, this symbol of Byzantine architecture was the largest church in the world for over 1,000 years. Although it has been bumped out of that title, the dazzling detail of the interior remains unmatched. 9. The Porcelain Tower of Nanjing Constructed in the 15th century during the days of the Ming Dynasty, the Porcelain Tower of Nanjing was an octagonal tower that reached 260 feet high and was then known as the tallest building in all of China. Though this height isn't overly impressive, the tower was built with white porcelain bricks that gave the building a one-of-a-kind appeal. OK, it's a modern marvel but very much worth noting in the wake of the other more historical feats… Officially recognized as the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, United Arab Emirates was just recently completed in January of 2010. Towering above all others, the building is 2,717 feet tall, has 160 inhabitable floors, 46 maintenance levels in its spires and 2 parking levels in the basement. Erin и ее супруг, известные на их блоге бунгало штукатурки как сподручный супруг, сделали как раз то. Они не имели довольно достаточный снежок для того чтобы сделать твердый пандус, поэтому они сделали что сколько угодно предприимчивое DIY-er: сымпровизируйте! We've been avid fans of green building blog Jetson Green for a few years and it's been great to see the site grow in popularity and influence. Founder, Preston Koerner, has always maintained a unique editorial voice that may be attributed to being based in Salt Lake City as well as being a credentialed LEED AP. Recently Preston took Jetson Green through a complete redesign and he's also announced a few editorial changes that should make Jetson Green even more popular among homeowners interested in green building. We asked Preston to share his thoughts on a few questions including the current state of the green building industry and what trends he's seen develop.
Preston: Thanks, Timothy. I've been thinking about the redesign for probably two years. I wanted to showcase contributors and style image galleries. And, to be completely honest, I started to worry about whether Typepad, the prior platform, would be around in a year or two. So I took the plunge. In 2011, I plan to showcase some of the best green homes before anyone else on the web. I'll also enlist the help of some new contributors for top-notch materials and technology coverage. Expect exclusive interviews with major industry players and guest articles from these experts.
Preston: Four years and still going strong! One thing I'm seeing is smarter homeowners. They can scrutinize certification to determine whether a home is actually energy efficient or water-efficient, etc. And they demand performance. They want a tiny house that embodies their scaled down existence or a Passive House that actually uses a small amount of energy. Also, watch out for the home energy score. Perhaps this will make its way into MLS. At some point, the market will recognize the value in green attributes and find a way to reward it.
Preston: This site may showcase a project from around the world, including Canada, but the audience for the most part is American. That said, it seems like there's some good information coming out of Germany in regards to ultra-efficiency. Japan produces excellent design using little to no space. And Sweden has a lot of experience with prefabrication technology.
