Ржавчин-Олеум пристреливает DIY & толпу конструкции с их преобразованиями кухни

You have decided to install a solar PV system for your home or business. Now what? There is more to hiring the proper contractor than just getting free quotes. Here are some questions to ask yourself and some resources so you can do your homework and begin generating your own power!

Research and interview all the potential installers in your area, no matter how small an outfit. I live in a very small and limited (solar-wise) community, so I called to businesses almost 100 miles away.

Ask Your Solar PV Installer About Their Business

  • How long have you been installing solar? The longer they have been in business, the more installations they have done and more experience they have. They will understand the obstacles, should any arise.
  • How many installations are off-grid? Grid tied? All PV was off-grid with massive battery banks until net-metering became popular and more cost effective. (Net metering is when you connect your solar PV system to your local utility, and they pay you for electricity you produce but do not use.) An experienced installer will know how to do both types of installations.
  • Are you licensed, bonded and insured? This is what you ask ANY contractor you hire! Solar installers should have NABCEP certification (North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners). From their site:

'Designed to raise industry standards and promote consumer confidence.' This certification is not required, so if installers have been in business for a long time, they may find this step unnecessary. In that case, check references, and make sure they are licensed in your state.

  • Do you have any judgments against you? Call the Better Business Bureau or the Consumer Affairs Office to check. It's a good idea to find this out before rather than later (I speak from experience!).

Questions About Services and Obligations, to Which the Answer Should Be “Yes”

  • Do you give free estimates?
  • Do you conduct a site survey? Do I need to be present? They should do a site survey, and I highly recommend being there. It's a great time to ask questions.
  • Does your company design the system and purchase materials? If they know the system inside and out, they will be better qualified to install and maintain it. Some installers give you a quote, then outsource the rest. You want the one company to do the entire job.
  • Do you know the building code and inspection requirements. Do you obtain the permits? Find out what permits are needed.
  • Are there any financial incentives? Do you do the necessary paperwork? Do you offer financing? Each company should know the current state and federal incentives offered. You can check yourself at DSIRE. If they offer financing, ask how much they would need for a down payment, how long you can take to pay it back and what their interest rates are. Ask for the total cost after it's paid off.
  • Will the contract include materials, start and finish dates, price and the payment schedule? Yes, it should include all of them.

Do a Cost Analysis

Your system needs to be sized based on your needs. The installer has software to determine this. S/he will also be able to figure out your ROI and how quickly your energy savings will pay for the system. Ask about and research the materials each installer uses. Components vary in quality and power output. You want the best and most powerful! Ask about warranties. Expect a 10-year warranty on an inverter and 20-25 years on the solar panels. The company should also give you at least a 5-year warranty on their service, as well as for roof and electrical damage.

Compare the Bids You Get

Ask a lot of questions! It is crucial that the bids be on the same size and style installation. The size will be shown in watts (W), and the cost will be shown in dollars per watt ($/W). All the bids must be expressed in either AC PTS (Alternating Current, Performance Test) or DC STC (Direct Current, Standard Test Conditions. Again, each bid must be for identical situations for accurate calculations and comparisons.

Do not cut corners with a cheap bid. If you need to save money, get a smaller system that you can add to later. Quality over quantity rules. If you are confident the cheapest installer is the best with the best materials, good customer service and great references, then, by all means, hire that company.

Check references!

Ask for the contact information of past customers. People love to talk about their home improvement projects! Find out if you can drive by their home to see their PV system. Maybe you will get invited in so they can talk about it! Inquire about customer service, if there have been maintenance problems, and if the cost analysis was accurate. Did the company live up to their service pledge and your expectations?

Most important – hire a professional! I can vouch for this! Prompt customer service, transparency, documentation and patience are signs of a reputable company. If your best interests are not theirs, find someone who wants a happy customer.

Building an addition to your home benefits you in two distinct ways: it gives you and your family more room to sprawl, and in most cases, it significantly increases your home’s resale value. There are a number of cost-efficient financing options to consider—including the most prominent ones below.

1. Home Equity Loan

Home equity loans are second mortgages that let you harness the power of the equity you've built up in your home. This type of financing option is especially attractive to many because:

  • You typically get a lower interest rate. This is because your established equity and the home itself serve as collateral—as opposed to using an unsecured loan with a ridiculously high interest rate.
  • You receive the entire amount of money asked for upfront, which is especially beneficial since many—if not most—contractors require some upfront payment before they start working.

A quick caveat, though: although the interest will probably be higher than it initially was with your first mortgage, this time you pay NO closing costs.

2. Use Your Home's Equity for a Line of Credit

Commonly known to lenders as HELOCs, a home equity line of credit lets you borrow in phases and as needed. Contrary to using a significant portion of your equity with a home equity loan, HELOCs allow you to borrow money for home improvement on a need-to basis—especially beneficial for DIY jobs. This type of equity loan:

  • Is typically issued by a bank or lender in the form of a checkbook or credit card, good for either paying contractors for labor and/or supplies as needed, or for purchasing home improvement materials at the local hardware store.
  • Usually comes with an adjustable rate, and depending on the terms, lets you pay on the interest only for a length of time.

3. Refinance Your Mortgage

This option is generally for those who've lived in their home for a few years and/or have established significant equity. A mortgage refinance package lets you:

  • Refinance your original mortgage for more money than your current amount of equity.
  • Use the difference in your current equity and the amount loaned. Depending on the lender's terms, you may even be able to modify your loan and extend the term length.

4. Use a Personal Loan

A personal loan or personal line of credit is generally for smaller home remodeling and renovation projects. Personal loans have lower associated charges, but it's good to keep in mind that since these types of loans do not use your home as collateral, they'll often carry higher rates than equity-based loans. Another potential downfall is that while the above-mentioned loan types are generally tax-deductible, personal loans/lines of credit are not.

A word to the wise: if you are using a contractor, do not disclose the full amount of the loan you've received. Why? Because when unexpected costs come up during the construction phase—and they almost always do—you'll want to have that extra 10-15% to back you up.

This week, JB continues his analysis of the psychological toll that is involved with a home renovation, and ways that you can preserve the serenity of your home, even when your tearing bits of it apart in the process of transformation between old and new …

Now, let's look at a list of commonly accepted questions to ask yourself before having a child (I saw a link to this story a few weeks back). That article asks the following:

  • Why do you want a child?
  • Do you have the time to devote to a child?
  • Can you financially handle a child?
  • Is your relationship stable (or are you stable on your own)?
  • Are you in a good mental and physical place for a child?
  • Do you have a good home for a child?

For my exercise in questions to ask yourself when starting a remodeling project, we will simply replace the word "child" with the word "remodel." And here we go:

a) Why do you want a remodel?

“Well duh – I always wanted a remodel. I mean, as long as I have had this house, I have had plans to redo the ____ . It'll add value to the home. It'll make life more functional, the house more livable. It'll be great for entertaining. I will get an opportunity to express my unique sense of style, plus …”

“My wife and I have already started picking out names: Brizo, Viking, Baldwin ….”

b) Do you have the time to devote to a remodel?

“Well, it's gonna take a little time, I know that. A couple of weeks of diminished sleep at first, and then I'll settle in. But before I know it, it'll be done. And things are going to run exactly according to my schedule…. I'll simply replace lying on the coach with prep for the contractor. No lunch-time youtube sessions for me, instead I'll dedicate that time to visiting websites for design ideas. I'll research and FIND all the "right products." ….I am going to be soooooo prepared . . .and it'll be fun – so remodel will just fly.”

Anyway — if it takes time – I'll just make time.

c) Can you financially handle a remodel?

“Well, I do have some savings. But I'll charge the rest if I have to. I'll start by getting a quote. I hear that it really is not all that expensive if you are frugal, and I can certainly find all sorts of tips online for saving money. Maybe I can do some demo; some painting too will help cut costs. And there's always ebay and Craig's List for buying materials [editor's shameless plug: or BuildDirect!].”

“Sure, things could get messy. I mean, times may get a little tight. But I'll just tighten the belt; no more grande mocha lattes from Starbucks, and coffee in the office until the project is paid in full! I can do it. I mean, at least it's not a child. It's not like we are gonna end up paying for it longer than we think. Right?”

d) Is your relationship stable (or are you stable on your own)?

“Well of course!”

There is not only a variation in taste, and yes, home décor should be discussed before any knots are tied. I mean — discussed ad nausea, and oh yeah – I was talking about having children, sorry. Varying expectations and/ or motivations during any given project and at any given point within that project also plays a big part in remodel rearing. Often you'll stumble upon unforeseen issues within the course of a project that are bound to try even the tightest of bonds.

e) Are you in a good mental and physical place for a remodel?

Remodeling is a physical activity – no question. I realized that shortly after removing an alcove-type cast iron tub during our last project. This time I won't do ALL the demo. Hiking the new tub up the stairs, too, was tough – I cut my fingers and doing the tub hook up wasn't too easy on my back. Maybe, not all the plumbing this time either. I mean – I occasionally go for a walk in the park and/or do yoga at work. I'm in good shape! I swear!

Oh – my mental place? … No problem – fit as a fiddle.

f) Do you have a good home for a remodel?

( Ok that's enough with that. I think you get my point.)

And here's the point, remodeling in an exercise in conjuring Murphy's Law, and let no resource or your own delusions tell you otherwise. Again and again, this fact is proven, no matter how many times you have done it.

Remodeling will contain some level of stress and/or surprise, just like being a parent. Knowing and accepting this up front can help keep you more sane while you, and your family, embark on it.

Пара недели тому назад мы соединили Майк Senese (сочинителя, хозяина и строителя TV/разорителя от имени науки) на его доме для того чтобы насладиться некоторой свежей пиццей ой древесиной сваренной в его печи пиццы DIY напольной. Никакой более лучший путь чем проводить вечер готовя, варя и есть пиццу, специально когда она делала для того чтобы приказать. Мы должны вручить его к Майк по мере того как он сделал весь готовить и варить по мере того как мы как раз помогли с едой. Его специальность неаполитанская пицца которая в буквальном смысле слова в его крови так много его вызванных родоначальницев дом Неапол, Италия. Одержимость Майк с делать его собственную пиццу от скреста начала с прототипом от PizzaHacker даровала титул PizzaForge. Это печь половин-купола конкретная которая сидит на решетке стандартные 22.5 " Weber. Здесь как он установил его до кашевар пиццы.
