Столовая Запаслив-Шика Эмили - интервью с создателем Merrypad

Gather ’round, friends! Blogger extraordinaire Emily Winters from Merrypad is here to share her phenomenal dining room makeover. Not only that, but she’s broken it down for us—piece by piece—to show how you can get the same look for very little money. I don’t know about you, but I could use some thrifty (and fabulously creative) remodeling advice. Check it out.

P.s. Emily’s on Twitter! Say hi and let her know how what a great job she did.

Emily's living room before the renovation

All told, much did you spend on your dining room re-do?

When it came to furnishing my dining room, I waited for the right products to materialize in my search. Call me cheap, but I’m patient too, and I sure am a happy girl when I can stretch my dollar to the extremes. It’s like a badge of honor.

The goodies you’re about to see in these photos are itemized by price below:

  • Table = $40
  • Chairs = $40 (Craigslist finds)
  • Extra seating = Free
  • Built-in Shelves = $100 (made them myself)
  • Wall Paint = $50 (two gallons, because I tried an oh-so-cute Coral Pink before repainting in Venetian Gold)
  • Roller Blind on Sliding Door = $50
  • White faux-wood blind on window = $25
  • Stool = $1
  • Pendant Lights = $100 (Approximately. Lights were also purchased in Canada, resulting in higher charges than you'd see in the U.S.).

Total spent: $400

Which items were reclaimed or bought secondhand?

I try to reclaim or upcycle materials when I have the opportunity. The hardwood floors are refinished, which isn’t exactly "reclaiming," but worth noting since many people would have laid laminate on top of the rough hardwoods without a second thought.

This bamboo chair was free on the side of the road. I actually scooped up two of them—one for each end of the table (because that's all I could fit into my car). Call me a garbage picker, but they have a nice ornate quality about them and just need new cushions and a little love.

The mirror frame you see above is the most exciting reclaimed project I’ve tackled—there's a dilapidated barn on my parents’ property that's going to come down to the ground soon, so I salvaged some of the floorboards while I had the chance!

You'll also see a driftwood table centerpiece; I carried it home one day from the shore of Lake Ontario (right in my backyard). I added molded silicone feet (from Sugru, a must-have) to the base to make it stable, and also elevate it just a smidgen off the surface.

What was the most challenging part of the remodel?

The most challenging part was painting, actually. I had dreamt up this beautiful, bright-pink dining room originally; it was a color inspired by a friend's shirt, and very similar to the Honeysuckle that Pantone is all over right now. I was quick to paint the walls, but then struggled with how to decorate around it while still tying into the greens, golds, and yellows in the rest of the house. I wish I had taken more time to get recommendations from others on how to make it work.

Any unexpected surprises?

The dining room table was a huge surprise and among the best finds ever! I stopped into Pier 1 casually, and it was displayed right beside the door, marked down to $40 from $400 because it was a "damaged floor model." The damage, I'll tell you, was minimal. The veneer on one corner was starting to peel up, and that was fixed with a dab of glue. The surface shows wear and some scratches, but I've always liked the more rugged, worn look anyways so it doesn't bother me, and since it was dirt cheap, I don't mind it getting dinged up any further.

Fun Facts

  • I bought a wonderful, solid hardwood table for $20 at a rummage sale and sold it for $200 on Craigslist (it was too big for my room).
  • I also sold the ceiling fan that was once in this room for $20.

These two sales returned 1/2 of the total spend right back into my wallet. Whoop for savings!

Mopping can be such a chore – especially if you're using one of those old-fashioned mops made with yarn. While it's not always the chore that's the most fun, you can make it easier by using a different kind of cleaning tool such as a steam mop.

Steam Mops are a Hot Way to Clean Your Floors

By now you've seen plenty of commercials for steam mops but maybe you're still not sold on the idea. If that's the case, here are some of the benefits to using a steam mop:
  • Easy to use – you turn it on, the steam comes out and viola! Cleaner floors!
  • Environmentally-friendly – no harsh chemicals or cleaning agents are required just the natural goodness of water is needed
  • No residue so your ceramic tile floors stay sticky-free
  • Affordable – after you pay for your steam mop the only thing it needs is power and water to run
Any ceramic tile floor in your home can benefit from a good steam mop but you should consider using it in areas of your home where you need to keep germs at bay such as your bathroom and kitchen.

DirectBuy carries a large selection of beautiful ceramic tile in a wide variety of styles, colors and sizes to create the look you want in your home – all at manufacturer-direct wholesale prices.

3 Ways Eco-Friendly Bathroom Fixtures Benefit You

Posted: 24 Feb 2011 09:00 AM PST

Let’s turn for a second to a perhaps one of the smallest, yet one of the most vital, rooms in your home; the bathroom. This is the site of a lot of attention when it comes to transforming a standard home into the home of our dreams, since remodeling the bathroom is commonly at the top of the list when it comes to renovations. Yet now thanks to innovation, you can make it one of the most eco-friendly areas in your home while you’re also updating its look.

How do you do it?

Here’s home remodeling enthusiast Alysssa Davis to shed some light on how making your bathroom green is a great start in all kinds of benefits for you at home …

***

The "green" eco-friendly craze [ED: let's hope it's a part of a shifting cultural paradigm, not just a craze...] is sweeping the United States right now, with thousands of new converts working hard to design products, tools, building materials, furniture, and accessories with features that satisfy consumers trying to conserve energy and save the planet.

Whether you are renovating a bathroom or just trying to be kinder to the environment by replacing energy guzzling fixtures, there are dozens of eco-friendly bathroom hardware products and fixtures available from some of the most popular manufacturers.

Typical Bathroom Fixtures

When we talk about green bathroom hardware, we are discussing faucets for the bathtub and sink, showerhead, toilet, and similar fixtures. These are the features that have the greatest potential to waste water and therefore, energy. Most people are not even aware of the conservation issues raised by a simple toilet flush, but think of it this way: If you waste several gallons of water every time you flush, how many gallons are you wasting in a day? A week? How about a year?

Water conservation is one of the key features in any bathroom feature that claims to be eco-friendly. Many manufacturers have cooperated with researchers and scientists to create bathroom fixtures that use less water, so that you can reduce your family's carbon footprint. The less water we use, the more we have for other uses, and for a much longer period of time. Also, every time you use water, your well or municipal water supply uses energy to replenish your water tank; and a hot water tank uses even more energy.

Benefits of Green Bathroom Fixtures

There are several distinct benefits to purchasing environmentally-friendly bathroom fixtures. They may not be apparent initially, because some of these features are a bit more expensive than their traditional counterparts, but the long run benefits are amazing, to say the least. Here are just a few of the most important benefits of choosing to install green bathroom hardware in your home:

1. They will save you money
This may be one of the best advantages of green bathroom fixtures. Bathroom hardware that is friendly to the earth uses less water, and it is not hard to connect the dots and figure out how that saves you money. For a family of only four people, it equals about $100 per year, and even more for larger families or those who had less energy efficient toilets (such as outdated models). These savings are for the toilet alone…let alone the showerhead.

2. They look great
The modern style and sophistication of the eco-friendly bathroom fixtures gives your bathroom a perfect introduction to twenty-first century style. No matter what design style you prefer, green bathroom hardware offers the first step toward a beautiful bathroom that will save you money.

3. They promote sustainable living
Green bathroom fixtures give you the opportunity to do something about at least a small portion of the crisis that our earth is facing. With constantly decreasing natural resources, we have to make every effort to conserve what we can while we still have the opportunity. If we leave it to our children to do, we may discover that there is little or nothing left for our grandchildren, and even less for future generations.

Savoring яркость кухонь серого цвета Джонни

No doubt you’ve heard of Johnny Grey. Named the world’s best kitchen designer by The New York Times, Grey has revolutionized how the world looks at the kitchen. Grey himself is more than an architect. He’s a thinker, a visionary. He’s the Beethoven of today’s kitchen design world, blazing forward with a brilliance that his increasing number of cult followers is just trying to keep up with.

A graduate of the London Architectural Association School of Architecture, Grey began to explore new ways of designing kitchens after a client wanted a rather unconventional Gothic punk kitchen. In fact, Grey wrote a manifesto on design. For Grey, architecture is the merging of beauty and highly personalized functionality. He's even undertaken neuroscience research projects at Salford University to explore the intersection of architecture and wellbeing.

In the 30-plus years of his career, Grey has written game-changing books like, The Art of Kitchen Design, and served such clients as Steve Jobs, the English National Opera director Loretta Tomasi, publisher Felix Dennis, and Sting, to name a few. So what's behind this wild success?

From the initial meeting to installation, Johnny Grey's team comes in to fit your new kitchen to your individual needs. The first meeting in the client's property involves a focused brainstorm that becomes the nucleus for the project. Often such a meeting initiates a look at how the ground floor functions as a whole.

Grey's team designs "handmade kitchens for the modern home." Often well-based cabinetry is replaced with freestanding pieces. Researched ergonomic principles set the foundation for improved flow through the space. As Grey believes that beauty should pair with function, the individual spaces he creates merge together seamlessly. Each kitchen is treated as uniquely as its owner.

As a result? Grey's kitchens become more than a place to cook. They become truly customized spaces, functional sanctuaries highly attuned to the needs of those within. With Grey, you're not just getting a new kitchen, you're getting a new look at life.

Сынок Vida Кас - виток конструкции Mallorcan!

While Mallorca is a gorgeous, stunning island with wonderful beaches, scenery, classy architecture and top class restaurants Cosmopolitan developers still felt there was a gap in the market for this type of architecture! As with all their developments they collaborated with a top class network of architects and designers who were, Tec Architecture, and Marcel Wanders design studio.

Mallorca has certainly never had a work of architecture grace it’s island like this before. Casa Son Vida is a world class villa, built in an exclusive community called Son Vida about 15 minutes outside of the fashionable Balearic city of Palma.

A design and architecture enthusiasts dream!

The Casa Son Vida is the most up to date masterpiece the island has so therefore the interior needed to be stylish, contemporary and in the same class as the construction, so Marcel Wanders Studio team were invited to stretch their creative minds to the limit with this 790 sqm of luxury space!

Standing out in the crowd!

This ultra luxurious, mind blowing state of the art residence is the example of Cosmopolitan developers wanting to veer away from the usual architecture found on the island. With Mallorca attracting young adventurous investors they wanted to be more daring and offer a unique alternative.

A different aspect at dusk!

Cosmopolitan developers wanted to capture the attention of the world wide design industry by placing Mallorca on the map of destinations for design enthusiasts. There are 6 planned for the island giving only a small hint of what is to come from Cosmopolitan.

Take a cool dip surrounded by nature and stunning views!

The project is forward thinking, looking to the future of technology, design and architecture. It’s been built to be highly sustainable offering unusual areas of space, using new techniques within the construction industry!

Clever lighting as been well thought out!

Contemporary yet offering comfort in a stunningly generous space with lots of natural light coming through the streamlined light panels just below the ceiling. A really clever design idea!

A new meaning to lounging around!

This residence has evolved into a curvaceous bold building that totally evades the conventional villa. It actually has the impression of a spacecraft that literally made a soft landing in these hills and decided to stay! I love the luxury of this dynamic deep red circular sofa that makes a bold statement amongst all the white curved wall!

Dynamic red makes a statement!

The kitchen area is light and clean with minimum fuss with wonderful floor to ceiling windows at the end. The island is ergonomic making it a genius piece of design engineering! This clever design integrates a host of functions.

A multi functional work of simplistic design!

Delightful dining here with hints of the past with the gothic style chandilier and dining set. The black sits dramatically against the white resulting in a stunning contrast.

Dining with a hint of the past!

The way the space has been used gives a fresh feel to ultra modern living. Everything appears durable and hard wearing with out substituting style. Smooth contemporary finishes against the curve of the walls and not a slight piece of clutter in site oozes hints of the future!

The luxury of space well organised!

This bathroom has a late 18th century Barque feel with the porcelain, offering an ornate, florid and playful addition to the room. The linens on the bed balance out the coldness of the porcelain, and with the candles burning in their place would create an ambient bathing experience to remember!

Clean and simple!

From one extreme to the other with the glitz of gold against a backdrop of stark white! A slight contradicition to the rest of the house, although the feeling here is ‘to dare’ to surprise!

Soak it all up with glimmering gold adding ambience!

Here I get the feeling of ‘Moulin Rouge’ with the gold and the French antique style chandelier; mixing the past with the future seems to be in the theme here! Well, Cosmopolitan said they wanted to do something different!

Unexpected glamor of gold !

This team of top design architects and developers have together brought in imaginative elements, with modern human engineering and design technology!

A touch of glamor adds comfort to this bedroom!

These guys are about to break new ground with a 2nd villa almost completed. Cosmopolitan are said to be inspired to create a design revolution on Mallorca. This community is architectural genius, for sure to place Mallorca on the map for future years to come.

DIY Inspiration: Pine Plank Ceilings

Posted: 23 Feb 2011 06:19 AM PST

We follow several DIY bloggers who are all in varying stages of basement renovations. Whether your lower level needs an update or a complete finish, putting some DIY muscle into your basement can do wonders for your home's square footage.

Traditionally, basements have a bad rap--dark, damp and kinda scary. But that's changing, thanks to daylight and walk-out elevations that allow for natural light, or some cleverly applied lighting tricks that can make the room seem brighter than it appears.

One project you may encounter while refinishing a basement is the ceiling. They're often left open, which is fine if you crave that industrial, loft-like look. For something more streamlined, however, you'll want to install another ceiling, and that's where we turn it over to our friends at The Stucco Bungalow.

Eco-friendly запасная комната Remodeling

Posted: 22 Feb 2011 09:00 AM PST

To continue our exploration in creating serenity in your home by making your spaces eco-friendly, writer and interior design enthusiast Jessica Ackerman talks ab0ut that room in your house that’s just crying out for a transformation; your spare room …

***

When it is time to remodel that spare bedroom, forget about spending a lot of money and use green, eco-friendly techniques to furnish the spare room on a budget. Great designs do not have to cost a lot, especially when you can pull in other materials from around the house. Creating a new look with the stylish items that you already have, along with some convenient garage sale or freebee items, is the perfect way to transform that unsightly and outdated spare room into an eco-friendly space.

Paint

If the bedroom walls need to be repainted, check in your garage or shed for old cans of paint from past projects. There may not be enough of one color to finish all the walls in the room, but you can always create an accent wall with a different color. Make use of what you have before purchasing new. If you have no paint at home, consider choosing a low-emission, eco-friendly paint at your local hardware or paint store. These paints are better for your home environment, as they cut down on odor and harsh chemicals in the air.

Furniture

Is the spare room the catchall for extra furniture in the house? Instead of keeping the space cluttered, remove the furniture that you don't need. Keep the bed, a nightstand or side table, a small dresser and a comfortable chair. The rest of the furniture can be used in other parts of the house or sold at a yard sale. If the furniture that you will be keeping is outdated, repaint it or recover it to give it new life and a look that will match the new style of the room.

Fabrics

Adding new curtains and bedding can quickly transform an old, out of style guest room into a relaxing retreat. If you have nothing on hand that would complete the look you are trying to create, purchase fabrics that are versatile in design and eco-friendly. Organic cotton is an excellent choice for guest linen and it comes in many different colors and styles. It is soft and durable to stand up to even the most restless sleepers. Organic cotton can also be found in window coverings, as well as throw blankets and accent pillows. Always choose fabrics that are non-irritating and hypo-allergenic, as some guests may have allergies that will prohibit them from using down feather comforters or pillows.

Accents

The easiest part of redoing a spare room is finding accent pieces. Look around the home for items that can be integrated into the spare room’s decor without much alteration. There may be some pieces that need to be repainted, but that will be cheaper and more environmentally friendly than purchasing new. Do not limit your seeking out of items to the interior of the home either. Outdoor metal art can be given new life as an interior wall art sculpture. Borrow books from the library about crafting with recycled materials to get other ideas as well. Remodeling with repurposed and recycled items also gives you an opportunity to de-clutter your home as you search for the perfect pieces to move into the spare room.

Стул Modernatique с намеком прошлого!

Posted: 22 Feb 2011 04:00 AM PST

The Modernatique chair is a mix of modern with a touch of the past hence the name derived from modern and antique. The minimalist finish is more contemporary while the actual design reminds us of another era. The chairs are a good size too at 520″600″ and 600(H). The elements of old and new give it a unique appearance of polished sophistication.

Polished sophistication with a hint of another era! (credit)

Created by Korean designer Cho Hyung Suk, the Modernatique chair comes in 2 different characters. The white comes with accents of ash, while the black chair comes with accents of wall nut.

The accents of ash and wall nut are in harmony with the black and white!

The Modernatique chair was showcased last year at the Korea Design Festival in Seoul, Korea where it caused a stir and received lots of attention thanks to it’s intriguing mix of modern with antique alongside it’s sheer simplicity.

Sheer simplistic perfection!

Whether it’s for coffee or cocktails this coffee table forms a perfect relationship with the chairs, and is the perfect size at 565″ 835″ 400(H). The set fits so well together you could fit it in a small space or make it the main ‘piece de resistance’ in a larger area.

The table makes this set complete!

The curvaceous lines and the slimness emphasizes the contemporary look. This furniture would definitely be a focal point in a minimalist space.

Furniture that would make a statement in a minimalist space!

The statistics of those in North America who have some kind of disability are significant. Of course, ‘disability’ is a problematic term, just because many who are challenged by them live perfectly happy and full lives. It’s just that their habits are different from those who don’t have those same challenges.

When choosing types of flooring for households that include the disabled, it’s really just a question of applying practicality against those habits, and lifestyles. In this respect, it’s the same exercise in choosing floors that’s in place in any household. So, in this fourth and last installment of our series about choosing types of flooring, we take a look at a number of popular floor coverings to see which ones might be more suitable than others when addressing the important issue of accessibility.

Dedicated support, attention to every detail and caring for every need sounds like the ultimate valentine…for your appliances. Forget the long wait at restaurants and cook up a romantic meal for your sweetheart. Show your appliances some tender loving care this Valentine's Day to avoid kitchen heartbreak before your dinner.

"The periodic up-keep can increase the life of your appliances and improve operation," said Doug Rogers, president of Mr. Appliance® Corp.

Take time to love your appliances and they will love you back. Follow these steps from Mr. Appliance to cook up some romance, instead of frustration with inefficient appliances.

Give Your Oven Some Lovin'

• Don't run the self-cleaning cycle within one week of a big dinner – ovens have a tendency to fail during or right after a self-cleaning cycle.
• Clean the reflector bowls under the burners to help cook more efficiently.

XOXO For Your Dishwasher

• If you're unsure whether or not an item is dishwasher safe, just wash it by hand.
• Run an empty dishwasher with a cup of white vinegar to eliminate odors and buildup.

Keep Your Garbage Disposal Smelling Like Roses

• Place a handful of ice cubes in the disposal. Add lemon, orange or lime peels and run disposal with cold water for 15 to 30 seconds. Continue to rinse with cold water.
• To avoid clogging your garbage disposal, remember to not pour grease down the drain.

Rekindle Your Refrigerator

• Unplug your refrigerator and use a vacuum to remove any dust from the coils. This will help it run more efficiently and trim your utility bills.
• Make sure it's loaded properly. Contents should be evenly distributed.
