Home-my-Home

Home-my-Home

Новый дом для защитника искусств!

Posted: 18 Apr 2011 02:21 AM PDT

In a wooded 12 acre area in Lincoln Massachusetts Andrew Cohen Architects created the perfect home for Springsteps (multicultural art’s foundation) founding director. They created the home with the focus on her love of visual and performing arts and the need for generous space to host her fundraising events. When the guests are gone it returns to a welcome retreat. The project included the protection of a vernal pool and the surrounding landscape. Vernal pools protect the natal development of amphibian and insect species.

Perfect setting for a retreat or venue!

The planning started with the layout and which areas would be used the most according to function. The areas were then organised over 3 layers and to break up the generous 6995 sf some more private areas were put in place.

Close quarters scaled down!

The ground floor was used for the main living areas, the kitchen, master suite, relaxing room, and office which opens directly onto the terraces. As these are the most frequented areas of the residents the scale was brought down to size compared to the rest of the home.

Floor to ceiling windows allow for a stunning backdrop!

The huge windows in the relaxing area allows the residents to enjoy the landscape from the inside as well as pouring in natural light. The master suite has 2 separate stairwells that are not connected directly with any public areas, to ensure privacy.

Discreet areas hidden in the layers!

The house’s other functional areas are situated across a generous landing near the main entrance offering another level of privacy away from guests. Throughout the outer layer of the house the architects designed diagonal cuttings to allow light in and also so the residents could connect with the landscape.

Sustainable strategies were enforced to preserve and protect the environment!

Some extensive conservation has been incorporated here, like the solar reflective roof, geo-thermal cooling/heating, and rainwater is collected via a recharger and sent to the aquifer. Unfortunately because the house is surrounded by heavy shade solar panels or photovoltaics could not be put in place.

Artistic touches give the space focal points!

Andrew Cohen Architects have been offering design solutions for varying clients needs since 1986 and have experts in various fields of interior and exterior architecture. Their work consists of no-profitultural c buildings, office design, customized residential design, restaurants, retail and renovations and preservation projects.

Hard to believe this sanctuary is a so close to the bustling city of Boston!

Debbie Glassberg with the help of BNIM architects has taken recycling to new heights, in the shape of her single family home created and constructed from five old shipping containers. These once cargo containers 40′ x 8′ are now a home full of generous space, natural light and now full of life!

Brought back to life!

This extraordinary piece of energy efficient architecture is 2.600 sqf of modified separate units so in the future they can be easily moved if desired! Through her professional contacts in the industry the units were sent to China to be pre-fabricated then shipped back ready for construction. The containers were fixed together with concrete and steel framework with the focus on space and the fact they could be dismantled and portable.

A different perspective on the mobile home!

The interior space allowed for a living room, TV den, 2 bedrooms, kitchen, dining area, 3 bathrooms, and a roof garden to add to the exterior space. Apart from not including domestic water usage (grey water), the green aspect of this home includes, LED lighting, a geo-thermal power system for cooling and heating, benches to capture rain water and demand water heaters. Eco friendly materials were used for the insulation which contains plant foam and natural bamboo was used for the flooring.

Holding it’s own as a contemporary living area!

A self contained den with a difference!

As you walk around this home it radiates a friendly ambiance and you feel you are in a show house with the contemporary furnishings and modern details. The galley style kitchen is all white giving a fresh clean look, and lots of light is allowed in through the generous windows. The largest window opens out onto the terrace so you can serve guests direct from your kitchen.

Galley kitchen where you can serve your guests on the terrace direct!

From containing cargo to a touch of glitz!

In keeping with a block type theme that is noticeable throughout, the bright blue elements in the en-suite are a stunning contrast to the light airy master bedroom with it’s own contained frame.

Framed in style to keep in with the theme!

The blue and block effect contrast perfectly!

Every little detail counts to make it simple yet special!

The roof terrace keeps in accordance with the green element as Debbie has created an organic garden which helps to keep their fridge and pantry stocked up. Being surrounded by trees the feel on the roof terrace is more like being in a tree house!

A breath of fresh air and cool design has totally transformed these old travelers!

The tree house effect!

Debbie a former toy designer, more used to making homes for Little Pony than for people is hoping for approval of this prototype, not just from the industry or neighbors but also from the government. Her aim is to use container housing for emergency homes for victims of natural disaster, as college dormitories or even for eco friendly home extensions.

A container transformed into an office and a bedroom! Awesome!

Clever walk in closet and modular style bathroom, great use of space with function!

The interior brings lots of surprises, considering the exterior appeal!

Where there is light there is life! Thanks to the well positioned windows!

Industrial design at it’s best!

In harmony with the surroundings!

As this was the first project of this type it has proven quite expensive especially as the pre-fabrication took place in China, but Debbie is hoping to price future container homes at $125 per square foot. The reaction from the neighbors so far is good and the home fits in well with the surrounding properties in the community as most of the original buildings were built back in the early 1900′s.

Hard to imagine this home started like this!

The eco friendly concept encouraged Debbie to pursue a more simple way of life with less maintenance!

Debbie and her family are planning a huge community party when the project is finally completed, so everyone can have a tour and get the feel of this unique family home, so make sure if you are in the Missouri neighborhood near 60th Charlotte, Kansas City drop on by! You’ll know about it for sure!

Springtime is a beautiful time of year most associated with revitalization, transformation, and new beginnings.

This is when life begins with flowers blooming, bees buzzing, grass turning green and the smell of fun in the air. Take some of that indoors. Spring is all about nature and the beauty it brings. The idea behind natural floors like bamboo, wood, leather, natural stone, and cork is to bring nature — all dressed up — inside to enhance the aesthetics of any room.

Natural flooring provides a great staging ground for you to begin to accessorize your spaces, and really bring out the potential that you’ve always dreamed was possible in your home.

Use your natural flooring as a base for great interior design

Just as you would frame a lovely focal point in a room, work around the foundation of your chosen color pallet — the natural floor covering. Complement the colors of the flooring with springtime accents. This can all be done by looking outside, taking your inspiration from your local climate and landscapes, and taking what you see into your home. This means including some of spring’s best offerings that will help your new natural flooring, and the accessories you’ve matched with it, to shine.

Here are some suggestions:

  • Geranium flowers in lavender and blue for a restful and calming feel against lighter colored hardwood (natural oak, or cherry), natural bamboo flooring, cork, or light-colored laminate flooring.
  • Fire-and-Ice roses for a stark look can look great with the neutral elegance of stone tile, such as travertine, or limestone floors in bathrooms, kitchens, foyers, and even outdoor living spaces.
  • Greenery, or pieces of art that depict it, can make subtle tones pop. The texture of the leaves, along with their vibrant color spectrums, is a great way to make your leather floors, and wood floors come to life, and create a “wow” effect with the mixture of materials.

Relax with natural flooring and matched color palettes

Redecorating a room, especially with new natural flooring, is the best way to create a haven within your home. Continuing on with the spring-time theme, you can rejuvenate and begin again with redecorating, by changing things around. By re-imagining what your space will look like with new textures and colors , you can bring about a transformation that will bring your whole house to life. Transformation means enjoyment and greater comfort. Unified spaces that also provide subtle visual and textural contrast bring restfulness.

This spring, consider updating your old space in need of a transformation with natural flooring surfaces, and see your room come to life.
