Having your very own swimming pool is a lovely luxury during the summer months. If you are thinking of having a pool put in then see these super cool pools below for inspiration.

All around this property is a retaining wall that helps to give the impression the infinity pool dissolves into the horizon, also hiding any views from nearby neighbors.

Dissolving into the horizon! (credit)

This cool pool is more L.A than Washington with its English Palladian style facade, Spanish roof tiles and stuccoed walls.

Great entertainment spot to impress guests!

The calmness of the Massachusetts island Nantucket drew the couple that own this home away from the upmarket area of Beverly Hills. The pool sits at the end of a perfectly manicured lawn, with breathtaking views of 300 acres of wild landscape scattered with beautiful colors and indigenous foliage.

Breathtaking views over 300 acres of natural landscape!

This pool area definitely shows hints of the owners native city of Las Vegas with the silver leafed tiles adding some sparkle. The deck offers impressive views all the way over Hollywood and beyond down to the ocean.

Awesome views over the Hollywood skyline down to the ocean!

In South Carolina on Kiawah island where villas are high-end and the golfing is great the architect here took inspiration from other vernacular properties in the state. He created this special bolt hole to become a haven of relaxation and entertaining. The island sits at the junction of 3 rivers with vast marshland, oak trees and palm trees enhancing the views. The brick flooring was done in a layering system to raise up the pool area so the owners felt like they were swimming with the trees.

A raised pool concept to connect more with nature!

This stunning hilltop home in Montecito, California had tough mountainous terrain that had to be dealt with first by turning it into terraces. The stunning ocean side terrace has unrestricted views of the Channel Islands and the harbor in Santa Barbara.

Unusual circular pool sitting pretty with untrammeled views!

Originally on this site there was only the ocean and lava from one of Hawaii’s volcanoes. The architect was in no doubt about giving tis home the wow factor and impressing its visitors. The celebration of the water crashing into the rocks and the stunning weather were big factors in designing this unique home. The lap pool is 132 feet with a tapered finish that makes it look like it melts into the ocean.

Celebrating the natural crash of the waves against the rocks!

On a stunning sea view spot in Rio De Janeiro Nat Rothschild international jet setter commissioned a restoration project. The pool is the center point with its arty tiling reminiscent of the pattern on Rio’s famous promenade.

Arty tiling gives a beautiful focal point!

A hollow was made here for the pool between ridges forming a swale, and large granite boulders were added to the original rock formation. This rocky environment blends perfectly with the Castle Rock, Colorado landscape.

A retreat reminiscent of the surrounding landscape!

Above Rio De Janeiro is a loft type home with a swimming pool concerned with the appreciation of the surrounding beautiful environment. The color compliments the whiteness of the home and the tiles replicate hints of the Atlantic ocean.

Aesthetic design work well with the architecture and surroundings!

This 75 foot long winding and twisting pool has been built with glass and mirror mosaic tiles. The wood is also flowing throughout adding a dramatic effect. The pool based on the second floor eventually twists and turns down to the lower level.

A serpentine pool flows throughout 2 levels!

A clever design not averting your gaze away from the Potomac river close by Washington DC.

Clever concept in design layout won’t avert your gaze away from the river views!

Whether it’s a lap pool , a chill out pool, a dip pool, or part of your entertainment area these are 12 of the coolest. Lots of natural rock, glass, mirrors and trendy tiling have been used for special effects.

The sites have been chosen to enjoy the natural environment and the designs to compliment it.

Лос-Анджелес подмечет национальные пожалования конструкции кухни

Every year, the National Kitchen and Bath Association holds a design competition for the best kitchens in North America. It’s a chance for contractors and designers to put their creations on display, share their process, and provide us all with fresh inspiration. And it seems Los Angeles kitchens have dominated the People’s Picks category for 2011.

In fact, of 10 award-winning kitchens, Los Angeles claimed three. It’s no surprise that southern California churns out innovative design, but these kitchens step it up a notch. Let’s take a look.

To get help with a kitchen remodel project of your own, click here.

Hacienda Kitchen

Designed by Cheryl Hamilton-Gray in Carlsbad, California, this Hacienda-style home took second place for the Large Kitchens category. Highlights include custom-carved cabinets, custom-painted backsplash, reclaimed terra cotta pavers and a fireplace around the sitting area.

I love the look of rustic kitchens, especially those with farmhouse sinks and warm-colored tile. This one plays off of popular kitchen themes in Los Angeles: the old-world feel of Tuscan kitchens mixed with classic simplicity.

Serene & Contemporary

In third place for Small Kitchens is “Nature’s Serenity” by Dana Jones, CKD of the Kitchen Consultant. The Long Beach-based designer integrates horizontal lines with artful curves, and paints a picture of natural elements with a green glass backsplash and exposed-grain bamboo cabinets. It’s Japanese design heaven.

This kitchen aligns with Zen minimalism, another popular style in Los Angeles. The idea is to pare down while keeping the space light, inviting and aesthetically striking. Jones’s kitchen achieves its goals and then some.

Feng Shui Function & Form

For you feng shui practioners out there, this kitchen is sure to be inspiring. Designed by Elina Katsioula-Beall of Pasadena, California, this one took third place for Medium Kitchens. I love the combination of traditional Asian features, like a cherry blossom mosaic, with modern touches like stainless steel hardware and appliances.

The kitchen cabinets are red-stained maple with a lattice-door china hutch for extra storage. The wood carving above the countertop is the Chinese symbol of prosperity, a nice touch for the design, which is rounded and harmonious overall.

Would you pick any of these kitchens for your home?

Установите Clothesline вовремя лета

Posted: 16 Jun 2011 09:00 AM PDT

Photo: mmmcrafts

I can't help but write about this, because I just replaced my aging clothesline. The old one was a piece of clothesline rope from the hardware store strung between two fence posts. The elements and heavy loads had stretched it out, and towels were starting to hang on the ground! I got another piece of rope out of my shed, and restrung it last week. Simple.

While I was putting the clothespins on the new line, I thought about how much I love hanging laundry. I've been putting my clothes out to dry since the mid-70s. We strung a piece of rope between two maple trees, and I've never been tempted to own a dryer since.

Hanging laundry, or not running a clothes dryer, is eco-friendly. You will:

  • Save natural resources and reduce the need for fossil fuels.
  • Save money on your utility bill.
  • Lower your carbon footprint.
  • Disinfect and bleach your clothes by the sun.
  • Extend the life of your clothes.
  • Learn the cycles of the weather and how to cooperate with them.
  • Spend quiet time outside.
  • Have clothes and sheets with that fresh-air smell.

First, check your zoning and/or covenants to be sure you can have a clothesline! If you are allowed, then read on.

Clothesline location, location, location

Pick an open spot that gets quite a bit of sun. Keep in mind that clothes blowing in the wind need space. You don't want your laundry getting hung up on structures or bushes. Allow room for air to circulate for faster drying. Stay away from trees and overhead lines, where birds like to perch and poop.

You want your laundry out of sight, especially if you spend time outdoors. Who wants sheets blowing around when they are relaxing on the back porch with a drink or dinner? There is a 'service area' in a yard, which usually includes a back entrance, utility hook-ups, the garage, a shed and anything else that has to do with home maintenance. My dad built a dog pen off the back of our garage, and the clothesline was not far from it. It was not visible from the main part of the house, and no one could see it from the street, either. (Our sandbox was in the same area.)

Choosing clothesline materials

Just like I did, you can buy clothesline rope at the hardware store, wrap it around two posts, add clothespins, and be in business. I don't recommend the line that is coated in plastic. Yes, it will last longer, but the clothespins slide around on it. Your clothes get bunched up on the line, and they pick up dirt that has settled on it. Nylon rope is a little better, but is still slippery. I use heavy cotton rope that is made for clotheslines, and the texture holds the clothespins.

Posts can be galvanized metal or wood. Do not use pressure treated lumber! It is treated with arsenic, which leaches into the soil. Sustainably harvested cedar or redwood are naturally resistant to the elements.

How to secure a clothesline

Installing T-posts in cement is the most common and secure way to build a clothesline. The more laundry you intend to hang, the sturdier the posts should be and the deeper they should be in the ground. Wet clothes are heavy! Depending on how much room you have and how much laundry you intend to hang at a time, determine a distance to set them apart.

Dig holes below your frost line, use fence concrete that you mix right in the hole, then set your poles so they are level. Let them dry for at least a day before stringing your line on pulleys.

Umbrella clothesline

Photo: Shovelling Son

An umbrella clothesline needs only one hole. The benefits of this type are that it takes up less space, and you can take it with you if you move. A plastic tube is placed in the cement, and the clothesline goes in the tube, making it portable. The arms of this type can also be put down when not in use, freeing up a bit of space in the yard. You can actually remove and store it out of sight.

T-post and umbrella types are the two most common clotheslines varieties. There are multi- or single-line retractable models, which attach to a stud in a wall and hook up to an opposing wall, indoors or outdoors. The single-line retractable model is great to take camping!

If you are lacking space outside, look into a fold-down model. A frame is easily installed on an exterior wall, and a rack with lines pulls up and out from it. It is unobtrusive until you need it.

Drying clothes during inclement weather

For bad weather or in winter, consider buying drying racks. I have been using free-standing wooden racks for almost 20 years, and they are a blessing in winter. There are several other types – wall mounted, ceiling mounted and rotary – and all are easy to install in an afternoon. They come in many sizes for small hand-wash loads to family size loads. Each of my racks holds a full load of wash, which was handy when raising children!

Summer is definitely the time to give serious consideration to hanging your laundry outside! This is an easy DIY project that can be done quickly and inexpensively and is a great investment.

The loo. The lavatory. The powder room. The bathroom. Whatever word you use to describe it, the bathroom is one of the most important rooms in the house. Yet when it comes to decorating, the bathroom is sometimes the most overlooked. Well, in the following before and after examples we show you how some blah and boring bathrooms were turned into one of the best looking rooms you can imagine!:

Gross. Disgusting, YUCKY! These are just some of the adjectives we can think of to describe this bathroom.

Talk about an upgrade! What was once a dilapidated mess is now light, airy and just plain charming!

Now a charming bathroom

Yes, this bathroom is spotlessly clean but what it very much lacks is color and style.

A bathroom that lacks color and style

Now that’s more like it! The peach walls, dramatic cabinetry and vessel sink make this bathroom a lot more interesting and lively!

A bolder bathroom

This bathroom is basic, blah and boring with a capital B!

Blah bathroom

It’s amazing what a little paint and some modern fixtures can do to make a bathroom go from BLAH to GLAM!

A newly GLAM bathroom

What do you do with a drab, uninspiring bedroom?…

A drab bedroom becomes...

…why you turn it into a beautiful, bright and breezy bathroom, of course!

...a bright and beautiful bathroom!

The blue carpet! The floral wallpaper! The blue bathtub! Where does one begin to describe how awful this bathroom looks?

The blue bathtub with matching carpet makes for one scary bathroom

Now this is a bathroom! With its freestanding tub and neutral colors, this bathroom is now warm, cozy and luxurious!

A luxuriously warm bathroom

This dowdy bathrom looks like it’s a holdover from “The Little House on the Prairie”!

A dowdy bathroom

Talk about a makeover! With its sleek subway tiles and modern fixtures this formerly dreary bathroom is now tres chic!

The bathroom is now tres chic!

While the bathroom in this 1920s home does have a certain charm, it does need a bit of an upgrade.

Dated bathroom in need of an upgrade

What was once dated and drab is now vintage, clean and bright.

A bright vintage bathroom

A dark blue carpet and old greenwallpaper makes an already small bathroom feel even more closed in.

A tight, closed-in bathroom

Gone are the old shutters and sink. In their place is an angled limestone sink and a sleek steel framed window which allows for more space and light.

No more shutters and an angled sink add instant light and space

Can you say YUCK?! Dirty, moldy walls makes this bathroom look like a real health hazard.

A moldy, dirty mess!

From frightful to delightful! That’s how we describe this bathroom transformation. The positively gross shower was replaced with an elegant marble tiled enclosed shower featuring a ceiling-mounted rainfall showerhead.

A delightfully redecorated bathroom

Yes this bathroom is neat and functional but that grey and blue wallpaper is a bit overwhelming.

The bathroom is neat and functional but the wallpaper is overwhelming

Serene, modern and streamlined. That’s what we call this now spa-like bathroom.

A serene, spa-like bathroom

Now we want to hear from you: which is your favorite before and after bathroom?

One of the sure signs that summer is right around the corner is the preparation of your pool for the warm weather. As such, there are some issues you must consider when beginning the process of opening your pool, some of which are dictated by the condition the pool was in when it was closed from the previous season.

Following prescribed steps for your pool maintenance is a great way to enjoy your outdoor living activities with friends and family this summer. It will also help preserve your pool, its covers and supplies, and all the materials involved in keeping it in good condition. Here is a suggested plan of attack in preparing your pool this spring and summer:

Remove the cover

Most pool owners use a cover to keep debris out during the off-season. However, the winter will often lead to a great deal of water, leaves, sticks and other types of material piling up on the pool cover. Removing the cover is easier when someone lends a hand, as it will often times be weighed down quite a bit by seasonal detritus.

Drain

Pools must be kept with an adequate amount of water in it during the off-season, primarily to relieve stress on the walls from outside pressure. However, leaving this stagnant water all winter often leads to a mess waiting for you when you remove the cover. So, draining the pool is essential. To get this done, rent a submersible sump pump from your local home improvement retailer, consulting with them on the size of your pool and the flow rate of the pump settings. Read all instructions of any equipment you buy carefully, and set to work.

Clean

With the cover removed, and the water drained, it’s a great time to get into your pool and clean the walls and bottom. This allows for a very surface when it comes time to add fresh water for a new season. A thorough cleaning will help you get off to a great start in making your outdoor living space an attractive and enjoyable location for your most anticipated events this summer.

Fill

The standard way to fill a pool is to simply use a hose (or two or three!). However, depending on factors such as water pressure, size of your pool, size of the hose and the amount of time you have to fill, this can take all day, or even multiple days. Also, check with your local water district before you start filling. Some municipalities have a limit on how much water you can use, and may even require a permit for refilling.

Another means of helping you fill your pool quickly may be your local fire department. In some communities, firefighters will come out and open a fire hydrant, and use it with their hoses to fill your pool in exchange for a donation. This will expedite the filling process tremendously, in some cases only taking an hour or so to fill. Of course in other communities, this option isn’t available due to metering restrictions and other concerns. Do some research on what the rules are in your specific area.

Prepare your filtration system

The last step before starting up your pool is to prepare your filtration system. You need to make sure it is in good working condition, cleaned properly and ready to go. This means testing your pumps, making sure all the products are added to the recommended levels, such as salt, diatomaceous earth, or chlorine depending on your specific filtering and pumping system.

Test your water

Water testing requires a kit that tests for pH and acidity balance. Once your have your results, add the recommended and necessary chemicals to your pool to keep it in pristine condition. Achieving a chemical balance in your pool is an important step in making your swimming experience, and maintenance experience, a successful one.

Making the most of your pool

As you can see, there are many issues to consider when preparing your pool for use. Once it’s done properly, it allows for a much more enjoyable swimming experience. Follow the steps above to help you get your pool in great shape for the new season. Taking your time on this project will allow for fun times with friends and family with a beautiful pool setting.

Having fun in your pool this year is more than just having water in it. Taking care of it will ensure safe condition for all who jump in for a swim.

Почему теперь время подготовить ваш гараж на зима

Posted: 15 Jun 2011 11:56 AM PDT

by Alex Johnson

In this post I wanted to talk about how to prepare your garage for winter, and why now is the time to get started. Some people would say this is a little premature, but hey; I’ve never heard of anyone regretting being too well prepared. With summer just starting to show it’s head everyone is happy and looking forward to some nice whether, and with all this sunshine it is easy to forget about the cold weather we have just come out of.

Why start now?
Quite simply, so that it doesn’t get forgotten. It is so easy to put off the work until the end of summer, but it only takes one sudden cold snap and disaster can strike. So why not plan early and take a look at what you need to do for this winter. In any event, the job will be a lot more enjoyable on a nice hot Sunday afternoon…

Things to check
Firstly, were there any trouble spots this winter? Did the garage get flooded at all? If so, try to find where water got in and if it has caused any damage. Look for exposed pipes which are vulnerable to freezing.

Check your garage door too. Winter is tough on garage doors and a weakened door could crack and leave your prized possessions exposed to the elements as well as potential thieves. Again, fixing this sooner rather than later is well worth the trouble.

Protecting your garage
Unless you live in an area with really severe winters you don’t have to go too over the top with this but making a few DIY repairs and improvements can save you money in the long run.

  • Repair your garage door if you need to (or if necessary, get a new one)
  • Wrap exposed pipes in insulated plastic, also give attention to external taps
  • Check your weather strips, keep them in good condition and they will continue to protect the mechanism of your garage door.
  • If water can leak in under the garage door, make sure you install a water stopper and drainage to prevent your garage from flooding next fall.

It is also worth considering getting a garage floor covering, this will help protect your possessions in case of water creeping in and it will help keep your garage warm, protecting your pipes and perhaps preventing further damage later.

All this stuff may seem dull, but it is always surprising how fast winter can reappear and all too often we see damage which could have been prevented if only for a little planning.

Your Roof: There is a time in every roof's life when it needs to be replaced. But, do you really need that new roof now? It's a difficult decision given that a new roof can cost from $2K to $6K. Just because the roof is leaking a bit does not necessary mean it needs a full replacement.

Replace it if:

  • It is 20 years old or more. The average roof life is 15 years.
  • There 1/3 or more of the shingles are damage, missing, cracked or curling.
  • You see sagging roof boards or mold in your attic.
  • It was significantly damaged by a storm. Your insurance may cover this!

Repair it if:

  • Ice dams appear on the roof.
  • You see minimal water damage in your home. Most water leaks can be repaired.
  • You are only missing a few shingles. Repairing a few shingles may only cost $75 – $250.

Your TV: It's a sad day when the tube stops working. It's usually very high on the list of priorities, but a decision has to be made to fix or replace first

Replace it if:

  • There is a recall for a defective TV. Sony is replacing certain models of their TVs for a great discount because they have defective parts.
  • It's old. New technology is better than ever and has become more affordable. You will likely get a better TV at a lower price than your previous one.
  • The repair will cost more than half the price of a new TV.

Repair it if:

  • You bought the extended warranty.
  • It's a really big expensive TV. It will not be easy to afford to replace this and will be worth the cost of a repair.

Your Business Copier: An office copier can be an expensive investment. What do you do when you your copy machine isn't working properly.

Replace it if:

  • The cost of repairs over the last six months adds up to more than fifty percent of the cost of the copier.
  • It's not reliable and you are losing money on your business without it.
  • Leasing a copier is cheaper than your monthly repair bills.

Repair it if:

  • Your warranty has not expired.
  • You can purchase the broken part on the cheap and replace it yourself.
  • It doesn't break down very often.

Your Gutter System: Gutters carry out an important function for your home: Carrying water away. It's important that they are functioning properly, so action needs to be taken when you notice something is wrong.

Replace it if:

  • You notice that the system is rusting out or the nails are pulling away from your home.
  • Water is pouring over even when the gutters are clear of debris. The system may be too small for your home.

Repair it if:

Your Hardwood Floors: A hardwood floor can hold up for more than 100 years! Refinishing your hardwood floors can make them look like new again in most cases, but there are a few exceptions when you will need to replace them.

Replace them if:

  • You want a different grain or much lighter color.
  • There isn't enough material left to refinish it again. It has been sanded many times and the nail heads are showing at the seams.
  • Water damage has caused the floors to warp or buckle.
  • They have very deep holes or cracks.

Repair (or refinish) them if:

  • There are scratches or traffic wear, but plenty of material left to sand.
  • You found them underneath your old carpet or vinyl floor. Old hardwood is very valuable and a refinish will take off any material left from the carpet or vinyl.

Some consumers still don't recognize the true value of air conditioning and furnace tune-ups. Dirt and neglect are leading causes of air conditioning system failure according to the EPA’s Guide to Energy-Efficient Heating & Cooling. Here’s what routine maintenance tune-ups are really all about:

1. Tune-ups are first and foremost about system longevity

The primary reason to have a HVAC tune-up is to keep your system running for as long as possible.

If properly maintained, a high quality, properly sized and expertly installed home comfort system should last more than 20 years. Improperly maintained however, any home comfort system, no matter how good the quality, may last less than 8 years before major repairs or a total replacement is needed. You could potentially double the lifespan of your HVAC system with proper maintenance. And that's only the beginning…

2. Maintenance means energy-efficiency

Over time, any engine or motor becomes less efficient through continuous use. Your home’s air conditioner alone may lose 5% of its original efficiency over each year of operation.

You can think of HVAC efficiency in terms of Miles per Gallon (MPG). By 'maintaining' your car with the recommended tire pressure, oil changes, and other engine tune-up procedures, its MPG is optimized. Your home's engine is the same. An air conditioning or furnace tune-up optimizes your home’s 'fuel' efficiency.

3. Future failures are costly

Think of routine maintenance as failure prevention.

If you take your car to get an oil change, one part of their service is usually to disclose current and potential problems discovered when inspecting the engine. Making affordable and necessary adjustments now that could save you a fortune in the future actually saves you money. A proper maintenance tune-up should include a complete visual System Inspection, and provide you documented system recommendations to prevent costly future problems.

Recommendations from NATE-certified HVAC technicians are an incredibly high value service. Great heating and cooling companies will always provide professional system recommendations, not as a way to sell you something, but as a necessary customer service to ensure the utmost safety and continued comfort for the homeowner and their family. After all, heating and cooling is simply about being completely comfortable in your home, all the time. Demand that your HVAC tune-ups be performed by NATE-certified technicians to receive the top value for your maintenance service.

Keep in mind that a professional A/C and heating tune-up is not the only maintenance step in proper comfort equipment care. Between tune-ups it's very important to change air filters at the recommended intervals, ensure that ducts are sealed properly and free up air vents from obstruction. These small measures also go a long way to help ensure your HVAC system operates at its full potential all year.
