Как газировать вашу лужайку

Aerating your lawn is a simple task that makes a big difference in the way plants and grass grow during the summer season. The most important reason to aerate your lawn is to clean out roots and leftover debris that can choke out new grass, and keep it from getting the moisture and nutrients it needs to continue to be healthy, and an asset to your home. Having clumps and tight spots in a lawn is also a disastrous recipe for attracting fungus that can spread rapidly, destroying a beautiful lawn.

What does lawn aeration do?

Aerating simple creates spaces in the ground so that the grass can have some extra room to grow. This allows for new plant life, oxygen, and even extra water. The process is not difficult, but it is necessary. It is very common to see actual divot’s taken out of the grassy area that result in pellets on the ground. Because grasses grow so fast, clearing out part of the root bed will keep the grass healthy and green.

Why should you aerate your lawn?

As said above, grass can grow very quickly. Unlike other types of plants that compete for soil, grasses will simply tangle up and begin to choke, often due to leftover grass clippings, compost, or even hardened fertilizer that compacted on the surface of the ground. The consequences could be dying grass due to lack of oxygen, fungus due to trapped moisture, and grass that never really looks green because it is struggling for elements.

Areas of your lawn that need aerating

The way to detect if an area will need aerating is by simply feeling the grass. If the lawn feels thick, yet hard, clumpy, or tangled, these are signs that aerating will be beneficial. Grasses thrive with space to grow, oxygen in the soil, plenty of light and water. If any of these elements begin to become low in supply, then bald spots, crab grasses, and weeds can take advantage of the weak areas, making for an unattractive landscape.

How to aerate your lawn for the best results

Aerating can be done with tools at home. Some of the best tools of choice for this project include:

  • Golf shoes or cleats with metal spikes
  • Screwdrivers
  • Ice picks
  • manual lawn aerators

Anything that can puncture the surface of the ground is optimal for this project, and the beauty is that it can be done on a dime. Another way to aerate is to use an actual lawn aerator that takes out chunks of the ground, including grass.

You can purchase manual lawn aerators, or rent gas-powered ones for larger spaces, or particularly clogged lawns. Many landscapers use this tool because it is fast and efficient, but can leave a little mess. Yet, the moss, dead roots, and other materials, once raked up, can be used as natural compost.

Making lawn aeration tools work for you

It is simple to aerate using the tools listed above. For shoes or tools that you hold or wear, simply walk around or crawl and stab the ground. There is not a proper pattern or way to do this, as it is intended to be done all over the lawn. If wearing cleats, walk all over the yard. If using a screwdriver or stabbing tool, simply create holes at will, leaving about two inches between each hole. The aerating tool is designed to work on a wheel, so the space adjustments are already in place.

Aerating for perfection

Take a look at your lawn, and check to see if there are spots that simply do not look healthy. If this is caused by something other than bundling roots, aerating can help. Grass will be more receptive to anti-fungal agents and weed sprays right after aerating. In fact, grass takes about 10 minutes to heal itself, and during this time it absorbs massive amounts of nutrients, and any type of treatment in place as well.

Have an aerating block party

If your yard is joined to another yard, there will be a noticeable difference in color and texture of the two lawns. Consider reaching out to your neighbor, and ask if they would like to participate in the task as well. You can rent a lawn aerator from your local home improvement centers, and split the cost with your neighbors as you aerate all the lawns on your street.

This will also provide a boost for your home, as you will be surrounded by attractive landscaping, and your neighbors will probably appreciate the results, and the split costs to get them, as much as you will.

A lawn aerating plan of attack

The peak growing season for plants and grasses is spring through fall. The air is warm, the light is plentiful, and the water makes a big impact. Usually, you need to aerate once a year in the spring to make sure that the grass has plenty of room to grow for the rest of the season. However, there is no straight forward rule, and since grass does grow so quickly, it can be done at any time.

Getting a boost of green

When the process of aerating your lawn has been taken care of, consider putting some kind of plant food or greening agent on top. Chemicals like Sulfate of Ammonia are a great way to get a really green lawn in a short amount of time, if the manufacturer directions are followed. In fact, after aerating, and before watering, plan on putting some of this on your lawn, water, and wait for a day. You will be pleasantly surprised with the results.

Plant food pellets

Another strategy that landscapers use is to fill the divet created by their aerating tools, then placing plant food stick in the spaces. This can be very time consuming, but for a smaller area that needs to be green and healthy, this is just what the grass doctor ordered. The plant food provides nutrients for the entire season, working like a time release capsule by dissolving slowly.

Enjoying the results

Aerating can make a big difference in a lawn and the way it handles the extreme temperatures of summer. It can also help aid in the way the grass actually defends itself from weeds and fungus. Coupled with the extra tips, aerating can make your lawn the envy of the neighborhood. Many have found that this is also a great way to prevent replacing their lawns, or having to reseed. Taking time for this type of task is something that should be on the list of things to do every year.

What more can be said of the importance of first impressions? They’re important, of course. And one of the ways that you can establish a winning first impression when it comes to your home is to amp up your curb appeal.

You’ve heard a lot about curb appeal before, too. But, it should be said that not every situation where curb appeal is concerned is about selling a home. Sometimes, it’s about staying in one too. Curb appeal is one of the outward results of how you’ve transformed a home and property from one that is impersonal, or even kind of ‘blah‘, to one that matches the home of your dreams. And transformation is really what all home improvement is all about. It’s a means of discovering that the home you live in actually offers more than you thought it would before you started your renovation projects.

In this respect, this isn’t just about marketing your home to sell it on to someone else. It’s about a sense of accomplishment, too. Siding, roofing, stone pavers for walkways, landscaping additions, and other projects can help you to realize the full potential of your property, and help you move closer to your ideal vision. And even simple additions like considering symmetry with accessories, or repainting a door, can make all the difference to the transformation process.

So, whether you’re selling a home, or staying in one, here are 20 ways to add curb appeal to your home.
