Earthenware that Revels in Imperfection

We all want to make our homes unique. But if you haven’t yet figured out how to break the mold, start with your home accessories. The new line by Susan Dwyer, dubbed “up in the air somewhere,” is uniquely organic and free to take shape as it sees fit. Check it out to see what I mean:

As with the rest of her products, these earthenware cups were made by hand without the use of a mold, so each one is slightly different from the next. They are individually glazed with either light gray or white, and then dipped in bright yellow rubber. Talk about cheery.

Charming and sweet, the Silo Votives are an innocent take on factory-scale storage silos. Collect several of them, the website suggests, and "create a mini industrial landscape in your home."

Even more detailed are these cute Factory Vessels. Container storage in a tiny smokestack? Sure, why not?

These precious pitchers come in either white or medium gray. They can house any beverage of your choice (although alcohol may lead to some accidents), and mix seamlessly with any color scheme.

Maybe a bowl and spoon this dainty could lessen your salt intake. The spoon itself is gold-leafed on the handle and covered with a food-safe white glaze. It may seem superfluous, but it's also too glamorous to care.

The gold lip platter may appear small, but it can actually be used as a table centerpiece. A gold-leafed rim circles the outside and a clear glossy glaze covers the center.

Finally, more color! Crafted with paper mache, the Fade Vessel is surprisingly water-resistant. These are individually painted and polyurethaned to make the surfaces shiny and extra durable. Also available in peach.

In a world where perfection is applauded, shouldn't we let our hair down every once in a while?

The margin between bliss and chaos in a home with children can be thin. One minute you’re sipping your latte (before it’s had a chance to get cold, thank you very much) and applauding your mastery, and the next you’re up to your neck in toys and art project remnants. Well. Unlike so many abstract elements of parenting, the solution is concrete.

Order and an enriching environment can be created with a few very straightforward design principles.

#1 – Create bins & stations.

Gather and lay out all of the toys in the house. Yes, all of them. Separate them into categories to create understood stations for your child, i.e. trains, dress-up, figures, cars, music, soft animals, etc.

Place the toys in open bins or shelving, like this Oeuf setting, to allow for independent play, and to help your child take out and put back toys on their own—which will thrill you.

#2 – Limit their options.

While it may seem that providing more enrichment and toys for children develops them faster, the opposite is actually proven to be true. Too many toys can discourage focused, sustained play. Children with fewer and more carefully-chosen toys develop a greater ability to imagine.

Plus, limiting the stuff also creates a more streamlined dwelling. Some basic must-haves that give a big bang for their buck are toys with several uses– ones that grow along with the child– such as blocks, books, art supplies, dolls or figures, and puzzles.

#3 – Every mess in its proper place.

Create a separate station for art projects where crayons, paintbrushes and paper are divided and accessible. As Maria Montessori discovered, a conscientiously arranged environment can itself be a teacher.

#4 – Integrate.

Breathe in, breathe out, and smile, because focusing on your child's at-home play doesn't mean being overrun with kid stuff. On the contrary, those carefully-chosen toys can integrate stylishly into any space in your house.

Fill a large tupperware with kitchen play things (cornmeal makes great indoor sand) and stash it in a kitchen cabinet. In the dining room armoire, stack the cake plates and platters on the top shelves, and line up vintage picture books along the bottom shelf. Or, keep a large bin of baby toys under the library table. Hang their drawings beside your vintage sketches of Oxford, and revel in the bliss of peaceful co-existence.

Throughout the years the American home has bloated to gigantic proportions, at an average of almost 3,000 square feet, and many much larger. They feature cavernous living spaces for the sole purpose of watching TV, vast walk-in closets and garages that hold three cars. But do we really need all that space? These six homes—from an architect’s tiny apartment in Hong Kong to skinny dwelling in Antwerp, Belgium—prove that efficient, well-designed spaces make less seem like so much more.

Tetris in Texas, a 450 sf studio in Houston

The winner of this year’s Small, Cool contest is in an unlikely location: Texas, the state where everything is bigger. The apartment’s tenant and designer, Chris, maximized his tiny space by playing “furniture Tetris” with Adobe Illustrator to arrive at the perfect arrangement. The defining feature is a sheer screen between the sleeping and living areas that serves as both a room divider and 2-sided projection screen.

While not that tiny by NYC standards, this 670 sf apartment was home to son of Lord Richard Rogers, a Pritzker Prize-winning British architect. With advice from his father and fellow starchitect Renzo Piano, he transformed the formerly dingy apartment into a colorful, quirky space. A large bathtub adjoins the bed, and a red lacquer wall spans the entire length of the apartment, housing the kitchen, washer/dryer and a fireplace, as well as clothing storage.

Space is at a premium in Hong Kong, so architect Gary Chang came up with an ingenious solution: a sliding wall system on tracks allows for a mind-boggling 24 different room configurations. He also maximizes the space with a hydraulic Murphy bed and a guest bed that folds down over the bathtub.

Design firm Atelier OPA in Tokyo gutted an Airstream trailer and transformed it into a luxurious living space. At the center is a long, built-in based on kenchikukagu, which roughly translates to “architectural furniture.” Fold the panels away to reveal a fully operational kitchen with a six-person dining table or convert it to two beds.

In the closet, literally, in London

It’s probably safe to say that this 60 sf apartment is London’s tiniest, converted from a storage closet. The main advantages are its location—across the street from the famous Harrods department store—and its functionality. The owner brags that he could shower, make a cup of tea and answer the door, all at the same time.

Every inch counts when your building is less than eight feet wide. Pieter Peerlings and Silvia Mertens, architects and founders of Sculp(It), live and work in this four-story sliver in the former red-light district in Antwerp. As a play on the area’s seedy past, they choose to go the exhibitionist route by stacking glass boxes and illuminating them with neon colors.
