6 творческих кухонь

Posted: 11 Jun 2010 11:15 AM PDT

Nothing makes me hungrier than a creative kitchen. Check out these 6 innovators.

#1 – Green Kitchen

Outdoor kitchens are cool. However, this kitchen from the Electrolux design team is even cooler than outdoor kitchens normally are. Featuring state-of-the-art cooking gear, plus a few organic plants here and there for good measure, the kitchen combines delicious curves with sustainable green design. We are particularly fond of the built-in herb garden.

#2 – M.S.S. Kitchen

Set sail with this nautical kitchen experience. The thing is an unmistakable boat—down to the last detail. Sails? It's in the lighting. Deck? Smooth, spacious countertop. Fixtures? Glistening chrome. We haven't found the anchor yet, but that's OK. This boat still makes a nice kitchen regardless. Via Alno.

#3 – Cubed Kitchen

So, "kitchen" may be a bit too grandiose of a term for this bite-sized cooking experience, but it made our list for its multiuse capabilities. And also because it's too trendy to pass up. It has all the essentials for cooking. Besides, it is a great mobile solution, since the thing is on wheels and requires only a plug to fire up. Check out Inoxpiu for more info.

#4 – Spaceship Kitchen

At first glance, you may think "NASA" or "Enterprise." At second glance, you realize the stunning array of white, black, chrome, negative space, and creative lighting is actually a kitchen—a very space-age kitchen. For stunning central focus, the kitchen boasts an amazing island with a curvaceous base and a lot of open space. The kitchen does not lack at all for high-tech features, too—like the wall ovens, vent, and more.

#5 – R2-D2 Kitchen

In another shrunken-robo form of the kitchen, this outdoor device is more of a glorified grill than it is a kitchen. Or so it would seem from the size. Upon closer inspection, this circular mobile kitchen—hardly larger than your outdoor trash can—is a collection of all the necessary conveniences for adequate meal prep. It has a gas range, a tiny refrigerator, countertop space aplenty, and more. Throw another burger on the grill with the Calanc mobile kitchen.

#6 – Color Kitchen

Some kitchens stand out because of their size. Some stand out because of their kooky appearance. Others look like boats. This kitchen has color. But it's more than color. It's the eclectic revelry of happy design. Catch the carefree splash of deco atop the cabinetry, the mod sculpted fruit basket and the see-through elements subtly appearing beneath the bar.

This kitchen has a creative combination of sleek lines and borderline-busy design approach—seamlessly integrated with beautiful color. Check out Lago for even more colors of the rainbow.

It’s not often that you hear about houses in Argentina. It’s even less common to hear about a house in Argentina on the edge of a cliff and by the edge of the sea. You’re about to read about one. It’s called the Pontoporia House. The architect's name is Ezequiel Rivarola.

Architecture is as much about designing a structure as it is about marrying that structure with its surroundings. Seaside homes are notoriously difficult to blend into their surroundings for a variety of factors. Flat landscapes, threat of big waves, high winds, and other natural difficulties pose intriguing problems for architects.

Rivarola overcame the difficulties and proposed an amazing solution. It presents itself as one of the most skillfully designed cliffside-oceanside homes ever built.

The house is a series of cubes. The angles, straight lines and windows imitate the large stones and cliff's edges that decorate the seashore. It fits in like an addition to the geology of the area.

In order to protect from the wind, the cubes provide innovative areas of shelter. However, the wind also gives the opportunity to have a little fun. Some of the intriguing wall formations, diagonals, and angles are designed to catch the wind, play with the wind, and use it to add life to the home.

Even the outside coloring of the house mimics seashore dynamics. There isn't much to distinguish the sandy color of the exterior from the ecru tones of the beach. The inhabitants of Pontoporia are going to love this house as much as they're going to love watching the dolphins, from which Pontoporia derives its name, from the flat rooftop. It has achieved a oneness with its surroundings that is interactive, enjoyable, and unbelievably beautiful.

5 предметов первой необходимости для того чтобы ехать вне шторм

5 вещей для того чтобы надеяться когда вы надеетесь… настил твёрдой древесины

Posted: 10 Jun 2010 08:00 AM PDT

Just before my daughter was born, I found myself buried beneath a metric tonne of baby books and related websites, each one designed to prepare me for what to expect as a new parent. After all, being a dad is a pretty major undertaking. And I figured it would be better knowing more, rather than less.

But, because there is so much information out there, sometimes it was difficult to plow through it. Some of it very dependent on the personal viewpoints of the authors. So, in order to find my own way – which ultimately is what you’ve got to do as a new parent – I had to get down to the basics.

Well, ordering a new hardwood floor and having it installed is nowhere near as complicated as being put in charge of a little life. But, there is a lot of information floating out there as to what a new owner of hardwood floors should expect. This is particularly true in the light of the floor’s warranty.

Since we’ve very recently launched a line of hardwood flooring that offers a 50-year warranty, I thought I’d list a number of basic expectations that you should hold in your mind when it comes to owning, caring for, and generally observing your floor over a period of years. Here they are:

1. Expect your hardwood floor species to react the way nature designed it
Each species of hardwood has characteristics of its own. Maple, or an exotic species like Jatoba, is very hard. Alder and American walnut are not, by comparison to maple and jatoba. When it comes to things like indentation, and general wear due to everyday traffic over long periods of time, choose your species according to your own expectations of how a floor should look after a year or two. Also, know that some species are more prone to photosensitivity than others – they will change color over time. Remember, this is a natural material. It will, in varying degrees depending on the species you’ve chosen, mature. Just like a baby grows up, your floor will do the same (although it won’t ask to borrow the car).

White oak hardwood flooring

2. Expect color variation
Continuing with this theme of natural materials, not every board will look exactly the same as the next. This is part of the charm of natural wood flooring; diversity. If you’re looking for a more consistant color, your vendor will be able to help you identify the hardwood floor grade you’re after to help you get there. But, even with the most pristine select grade in any species, there will be variation. And to strain my initial metaphor about becoming a parent even further, know that your floor is unique. And its uniqueness should be celebrated.

3. Expect expansion and contraction
Your hardwood floor needs to breathe, and needs room to expand. This is true whether the flooring is still in its box, waiting to be installed, or whether the flooring has been installed for years. It will move, whether you’ve planned for its movement on your subfloor or not. Make sure that when you’re installing it, that room for this kind of movement is allowed. Acclimate your hardwood flooring before it’s installed. And plan on an expansion gap when the flooring is laid. Like raising a child, the balance between encouraging independence and establishing stability is important. Emphasizing one too heavily can result in some pretty messy situations. Same with your floor!

4. Expect your environment to be important
Where you install hardwood flooring matters – VERY MUCH . Just as you wouldn’t plan to put baby’s crib next to the water heater, or place your teenager’s room in a broom closet, so it follows that you shouldn’t put solid hardwood floors in areas where it can potentially come to harm. Areas where moisture is likely, or where humidity is common, should be no-go areas for solid hardwoods. Some engineered hardwood floors do well in basement suites and in areas not specifically controlled for air moisture, for instance. But, always investigate whether or not the flooring you’re interested in is suitable.

5. Expect to include regular maintenance
When you’re a parent, it’s a lifetime gig. And the results are often at their best when you’ve been observant and have generally put the time in to ensure health and happiness. Same with caring for your hardwood floors. Over time, you can expect your floors to show signs of wear. But, you can keep them healthy by paying attention to them, seeing to minor spills as soon as they happen, keeping an eye on pets to make sure that they’re getting along with your flooring, and every once in a while treating your floor to something special – a refinishing job, for instance. As resilient as a wood floor is, ultimately when it comes to long-term health of your floors, a lot of that will depend on you.

With every warranty on a hardwood floor, there will be some variations. But, like my quest to prepare myself to be a dad, the basics, the things over which you have control, are important to keep in mind.

Cheers,

Rob.

Simple ideas to create your own spa retreat

If your ideal vacation includes holing yourself up in a luxurious spa until the sun goes down, recent strides in bathroom renovations are sure to make you swoon. Of course, remodeling your master bath into a spa retreat like these will make going to work a bit of a challenge. Oh, well.

#1—Wall Tiles. In order to recreate the look and feel of a spa, homeowners are paying more attention to their flooring. Large travertine tiles extended up onto the walls create that gorgeous marble look. Plus, they're easy to clean.

#2—Heated Flooring. Cold feet got you down? Heated tiles can cure that. This trend has taken the remodeling world by storm and has yet to wane in popularity. An insulated electric cable must be installed underneath the tile in order to keep your toes nice and toasty.

#3—Privacy Glass. Master spas are also bringing a little privacy back into the bathroom by sanctioning off the toilet from the rest of the space. If creating a separate room is too great a challenge, you can always just add a partition or frosted glass.

#4—Comfort Features. In order to bring the look and feel of luxurious comfort together, you may want to invest in a relaxing sound machine or a few lush plants. Bring in the things that help make you feel at ease, and you may never have to shell out big bucks for a spa retreat again.

Оно всегда работа не любит это?

Posted: 09 Jun 2010 11:19 AM PDT

Sunday morning, a neighbor down the block called the fire department for what was apparently a minor fire.  I saw FDNY parked down the street as I returned from walking the dogs.  One of the firefighters was flushing out the hydrant as another rolled up the hose.  They weren't there long.

The water supply pipes in the street here are very old and they also supply those hydrants.   Whenever one of those hydrants gets flushed the houses on the block get brown water for hours afterward.   I don't mean rusty looking water.   There are literally flakes of rust and (for lack of a better term) quasi-organic spooge floating in the water -- stuff you definitely don't want to swallow.  That's why most of the houses here have water filters.

It was a hot morning and the dogs were dehydrated so I used the sink's filtered water dispenser to fill their bowl.   But the sediment was so heavy that morning that the water was down to a trickle before the bowl was half full. I was way overdue for a filter change.

Back in 2000, I bought this dual cartridge water filter unit, an OmniFilter OT32, from Home Depot. The last time I stocked up on filters was probably 2005.   Bottom line, HD no longer carries OmniFilter.  Neither does Lowes nor the local plumbing supplier.  This market appears to be owned by GE and Whirlpool now.

I bought a couple of filters that looked the same but when I installed them I got a Bellagio water show under the sink.

So I took the filters back and bought a pair of GE filters.  Same results: an in-cabinet water park.

I gave the gaskets a quick check and they looked okay.   Anyway, in my snorting and cursing efforts to finish this simple homeowner task, I caused a leak in the 'T' fitting that feeds the ice dispenser on my refrigerator.  Fortunately I had a replacement fitting for that -- and at last I managed to actually fix something.  But then it was back to the issue of the incompatible water filters.

I couldn't see any alternative.  If I couldn't buy water filters for the unit I had, I would need to replace the unit itself.  So I bought a brand new water filtration unit, a GE, for $120.  Water definitely ain't free.

But right out of the box I knew I had problems.  First, the fitting for the water supply is designed to fit between the cold water supply and the fixture shut off valve.  In other words, there is no dedicated water shut-off for the filter.  How cheap 'n cheezy is that?  Every time I needed to change the filters I would have to shut off the house supply.  This is the kind of box store price cutting that annoys the hell out of me.  Someday I'll write about the bag of 100 BX connectors I got from a Home Depot which had set screws about 1/8" too short to get a decent bite on the cable.

Second, it was all Pex tubing.  Somehow, I would have to find a way to tap my refrigerator's copper water feed into it.  But NYC's plumbing code hasn't even caught up to the 1970s yet so finding a Pex->copper fitting was going to time-consuming quest.

Before ripping it out, I decided to take one last try at the old filter unit, beginning with a closer inspection of the containers for a possible crack.  Under bright light I saw what the problem was.  A thin, recessed gasket had rolled over on itself.   I fixed it, installed a new filter, snugged up the shell... presto.  No leaks.

Total time to replace filters 5 minutes Cost of filters $29
Total time wasted on bullshit 6 hours Total additional cash outlay $150

Включая зеленый цвет в вашу кухню Remodel

Posted: 09 Jun 2010 10:36 AM PDT

The best room in the house to make green is your kitchen. But where do you start? What do you do? The process is proven easiest if you green as you go, or incorporate the most energy-efficient components directly into your remodel. Here's how.

Appliances

Any appliance you purchase needs to have one big qualification: it must be Energy Star. Energy Star appliances will slash your energy bill and help out the environment. Quit washing the dishes by hand and go with a dishwasher. Dishwashers, when used correctly, actually use less water and energy than traditional dishwashing. Beyond that, purchase appliances only as big as you need them. Bigger appliances require more energy.

Counters

You have no need to compromise quality when investing in green countertop. The best options on the market are Terrazzo, a low-maintenance, ultra-durable, and oh-so-attractive counter material. PaperStone, neither paper nor stone, is another excellent option for long-lasting countertop materials.

Water

For any faucets in the kitchen, purchase a low-flow faucet system. You'll use far less water than before.

Cabinets

First off, do you really need cabinets? "Of course," is your first thought, but think again. The less materials required, the greener. For this reason, consider shelves instead of cabinets. Modern kitchens, in keeping with the minimalist look, are using traditional or stainless steel shelving instead of the conventional wood. If you do use wood, be sure to purchase recycled wood that is free of harmful chemicals and treatments.

Walls

Paint with low-VOC paints. They're equally durable, come in beautiful colors, and are far safer than traditional paint.

Flooring

Any quality flooring company has a list of environmentally friendly and safe flooring options. The important feature to remember is that flooring should be VOC-free and come from renewable materials. Wood, cork and bamboo are gorgeous eco-friendly elements.

Light

Use only CFL bulbs in the kitchen. A lot of light is important for the kitchen, but why turn on the lights when you can use natural light? Open up the ceiling with skylights and use light-colored cabinetry and flooring to make your kitchen a brighter place.

A green kitchen isn't just about the walls, paint, or appliances. It's about what you eat, too. The only kind of food that will match your now-green kitchen is food that is locally grown and organic. Eat up, be healthy, and enjoy.
